22.01.2022 The catastrophic bushfires devastating lives, homes, wildlife, livestock, land and livelihoods across our nation is a crisis of unprecedented proportions, and i...t demands an unprecedented response. We thank those dedicated volunteers and emergency services who have been working tirelessly over the past weeks and months and continue to battle these fires daily and give support to those in need. Our hearts go out to all of those who have been affected. At times like these, we all want to know what we can do to be useful. We know that many members are already helping where they can in many ways, and we too will do our part. As a start, we’re providing a number of Acumen practice notes, relating to post-fire design and the provision of pro bono services, freely available on a new dedicated bushfire response website https://www.architecture.com.au//national-bushfire-response. Check back regularly for more information on our ongoing response to the bushfire crisis. This is not a short-term crisis, and we need the support of the architectural profession to support us as we face this crisis together. It’s times like this that we as a profession have the opportunity to improve people’s lives significantly through the medium of design. Not only by rebuilding what they once had, but by designing better, stronger, safer buildings that not only protect their end users but improve their lives through the quality of design. From the ashes of this terrible natural disaster we have an opportunity to afford everyone affected quality design. Design that upholds design integrity as well as serving the basic functions of a structure or dwelling. In doing so, many of the affected now seeking to rebuild will have something they will be proud to call home once again.
