25.01.2022 Have you heard of the Djarlma Plan? It’s transforming WA’s forest industries. The plan is inspired by the Noongar concept of Djarlma, reflecting the interconnected relationship of people with forests and woodlands. It's a strategic framework for the WA forestry industry developed by an independent, multi-disciplinary panel focusing on healthy forests, community benefits & job creation. Examples of actions already achieved include the Wood Encouragement Policy, developi...ng the South West Timber Hub and supporting carbon farming opportunities. The next stage implementation plan will be released soon, benefitting forest health and further transforming WA’s forest industries. https://www.forestindustries.com.au/djarlma-plan.html See more

22.01.2022 What is a residue market A residue is a byproduct of harvesting and sawmilling operations. They are a substantial resource*, consisting of solid wood offcuts (including woodchips), sawdust, shavings and bark. In this instance, residue from our timber industry is used for its chemical properties as part of Simcoa's process to create silicon.... Silicon is used in so many important products, such as solar panels, aluminium, silicon chips found in a wide range of electronic devices and optical glass. *https://www.agriculture.gov.au//wood-residues-market-asses

20.01.2022 As part of the harvest planning process, tree marking is undertaken by trained professionals. Trees to be retained are marked with white painted rings. Habitat trees are marked with a large white 'H' to ensure birds and other animals have somewhere to live and nest. Other habitat elements (like logs and understorey) are also retained. Exclusion zones and boundaries are marked with a large white 'X'.

20.01.2022 Construction is set to begin on WA’s first mass timber-framed development this July! Located in Fremantle, Harbour will be a six-storey, highly sustainable building constructed out of Cross Laminated Timber. It will feature exposed timber elements throughout the building, designed to enhance wellbeing, boost productivity and have a positive impact on those within (biophilic design).... 16.01.2022 Great story in the South Western Times on last week's industry tour with Assistant Federal Forestry Minister Jonathon Duniam and Federal Member for Forrest, Nola Marino MP. https://www.facebook.com/SouthWesternTimes/posts/4368651206513091

15.01.2022 We are winding the clock right back this #ThrowbackThursday, with this gem from circa 1903, of workers in a timber mill at Yarloop. We can't be sure, but it is likely this was taken at the Millars timber mill. Brothers Charles and Edwin Millar established their timber business in the 1880s. In 1902, seven major sawmills merged with Millars to form Millars' Karri and Jarrah Company. ... In 1910, the company was operating 26 sawmills, about 563km of railway, three shipping ports, 1000 horses and 40 locomotives. They employed over 500 people. https://www.facebook.com//a.156979020996/3029807360380236/

14.01.2022 On completion, the project will have used 18 cubic metres of sustainable timber which will result in a carbon offset of 9.8 tonnes making it one of Western Australia’s most sustainably designed and built venues." 14.01.2022 Sustainable forestry, the key to our future Today is the International Day of Forests, so we thought it timely to remind you that: Australia has first class forest management skills, experience and people, and an international reputation for sustainable management of our forests. ... Australia’s forest sector plays a critical role in ensuring forests can continue to benefit the nation’s environment, climate and economy for generations to come. We need to manage our forests actively and adaptively across all land tenures including National Parks, State forests and private land to achieve best outcomes now and into the future. We must respect and embrace the knowledge and experience of Traditional Owners and participate in two-way capacity building to help manage our forests sustainably, together. Climate change is exacerbating the greatest challenges facing Australia’s forests - catastrophic fire events; invasive species; permanent land clearing. Active and adaptive land management is key to mitigating these challenges. Australia needs more certified sustainably managed forests. Well managed forests mitigate climate change in our cities and on our farmsand so much more. Wood from sustainably managed forests supports and promotes a circular economy, which is a key solution to combat climate change. See more

14.01.2022 The impressive 415-metre long Esperance Jetty was officially opened last week, with local WA jarrah proudly featuring in its list of construction materials. The jarrah was supplied and cut to various lengths by Redmond Sawmill near Albany, including over 41.5 cubic metres for the jetty’s deck. The native hardwood is often used in jetty and bridge construction, due to its strength and durability and high resistance to weather, rot, termites and marine borers....
