24.01.2022 Vale Benny Carslake a communist and trade unionist! The Communist Party of Australia pays tribute to our comrade and trade union leader Benny Carslake who sadly... passed away on 30th April 2021. Benny was one of those trade union plus fighters who fought for a socialist Australia and a better world for all. He began his trade union activity in 1975 as a rank-and-file member in his beloved South Australia. He played an historical role in the history of the CFMMEU as a founding member of the CFMEU SA branch Construction and General Division of which he was state secretary for a number of years. A bricklayer by trade Benny was in close contact with working class people and helped to organise them in the housing and commercial construction. As both a communist and a trade unionist he forged strong connections with sections of the popular movement. Benny was instrumental in putting the Semaphore Workers’ Club in the hands of working people. The Commo Club as it is popularly known has been awarded several recognitions, most recently the Port of Adelaide National Trust Rex Munn Cultural Award. Benny fulfilled a dream by travelling to Cuba in 2009 where he witnessed what socialism provides for working people. He was a fighter against the US blockade on Cuba and demanded its lifting. He was active educating and organising union officials and rank and file members in working class politics many of whom found home in the CPA.
