25.01.2022 Jeff Fenech v Kostya Tszyu pound for pound at their peaks. Who wins? I asked Johnny Lewis who trained them both.... Here's my interview with the master coach. JOHNNY Lewis talks to Grantlee Kieza about boxing, a life in rugby league and his crazy mate Tommy Raudonikis. Q: YOU trained two greats - Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu. Who was better? A: Jeff Fenech. What Jeff did in boxing, I don't know if we'll ever see that equalled again. Jeff only had 28 amateur fights and half of those were in Police Boys Clubs yet he still won a medal at the World Cup and with fairer judging could have won the Olympic gold medal in 1984. As it was he knocked out the gold medallist, Steve McCrory, two years later to retain his world bantamweight title. Kostya had a huge start on Jeff. When he turned pro, Kostya already had something like 300 amateur fights against the best in the world, other Russians, Cubans, Americans and East Germans. Jeff trained with such intensity; he would do more work in an hour in the gym than Kostya would do in two. He would fight or spar anyone - even trade punches with another of my world champs Jeff Harding, who was 20kg heavier - whereas Kostya wouldn't move out of his division (junior-welterweight). Jeff could fight all night and never get tired and Jeff Harding was like that, too. Kostya had a tendency to tire and sometimes he tired early. Kostya was very fortunate that he had a great punch in both hands. Q: Could Kostya have beaten Floyd Mayweather? A: Kostya would have had to go after Floyd and try to bomb him early like he did with Zab Judah, a great fighter he knocked out in two rounds. If Floyd made it past four rounds Kostya would have found it all but impossible. Floyd is probably the best fighter of the last 20 years, probably more. Q: You were a long-time committee man at the Newtown Jets, where Warren Ryan coached and you were the trainer for the Australian rugby league team. Do you remember your first time watching Origin at Suncorp Stadium? A: It was 1985. I'd brought Jeff Fenech up from Sydney to fight a tough, wiry bantamweight from England named John Farrell at Brisbane's Festival Hall. Three days before the fight we went to Lang Park to see Queensland beat Terry Fearnley's Blues 20-6 in Origin III. I made the mistake of wearing a Blues hat to the game. As we walked out of the stadium one of the Queensland fans, celebrating with a can in his hand, crash tackled me on to the concrete footpath. It tore all the skin off my hands. Jeff jumped in and decked the guy with a short left hook. I'm trying to struggle up from the deck and we hear this voice booming out "Jeff, don't hit him, please don't hit him". We look around and there's John Sattler charging at us like he's trying to score a try. We thought he was running in to save the bloke's life, but instead he kicks him right up the date so hard he almost launched him into orbit. That was nearly 30 years ago and the poor bloke is probably still walking around bow-legged. Q: At Newtown you became friends with Tommy Raudonikis and John Singleton. Tommy wouldn't have done anything outrageous would he? A: In 1982, Tommy and I had to fly to Griffith in country NSW on a promotional visit for Singo along with Paul Ferreri, who was a really dapper Commonwealth bantamweight boxing champion. We went in a tiny four-seater plane with a trainee pilot at the controls. I've got a heart the size of a pea and I was shaking even before we hit the turbulence. Tommy had got on the plane straight from a Newtown game at Henson Park. He didn't have time to shower and he was covered in so much dirt he looked like one of those New Guinea mud men. He'd forgotten to put his teeth back in after the game and was also carrying a carton of beer. Paul Ferreri was from Melbourne and had no idea who this weird looking bloke was, all covered in dirt and mud. We were somewhere over the Blue Mountains and Tommy had already sunk half a dozen cans and was busting for a leak when he realised there was no dunny on the plane. He decided to improvise with an empty Toohey's can but missed the mark and instead sprayed all over Paul Ferreri's clothes. I had to jump between them to stop round one. Then with the little plane rocking all over the place, Tommy decided to light up a smoke. Before long his ash had ignited the shag pile carpet on the walls of the cockpit. We were on fire 3000m above ground. I had to use one of Tommy's beer cans to extinguish the flames. Q: Who's the best league player you ever saw? A: Johnny Raper without doubt. My top five would be Raper, Graeme Langlands, Reg Gasnier, Arthur Beetson and Steve Rogers. I thought Steve was absolutely great but he doesn't get the accolades of the others. He was dynamic at fullback, centre, five-eighth, lock - wherever he played. I think it's only a matter of time before Cameron Smith becomes an Immortal. He's everything the game should promote - a damn good bloke, a great leader, a great club man and his real stamp on football could come from coaching. Q: How is rugby league different now to the game you started following 70 years ago? A: They've taken the contest out of the scrums. The play-the-balls are a joke and they stand that far back from each other now you could almost have morning tea before you are in contact with someone. Rugby league was always a tough game and the closest thing to a fight in that the dominant team usually wore down the other. These days the lesser side can win. Q: Your record in boxing, with six world champions, has been compared to Wayne Bennett's in league. How did you become friends? A: I met Wayne through his players who were on Australian teams - blokes like Kerrod and Kevvie Walters, Steve Renouf, Gary Belcher. In 1992, I was in Bismarck, North Dakota, and one of my fighters, the hometown star Virgil Hill, was getting on the scales for a world-title fight, when I get a long-distance call from Wayne at the Sydney Football Stadium. He was ringing to say thanks for the help I gave his Broncos players in beating St George in the grand final. The secret of Wayne's success at the Broncos is that his players wanted to play well for him. Having good players helps - it's like having good fighters - but even if you have the best talent the hard job is to make sure they stay the best. I always admired Jack Gibson because he simplified everything and his men always wanted to play well for him. There have been other great coaches of recent years - Gus Gould and Warren Ryan - and Warren probably is still the pick of rugby league coaches as far as the A to Z of the game. But he didn't have what Wayne Bennett and Jack Gibson had in being loved by the whole club. Q: What's your best memory from the fight game? A: With each of my fighters there's something that sticks out. But I'd have to say No. 1 was getting Jeff Fenech to the Olympics in 1984. We were both broke and there was no prizemoney, just the joy of succeeding from all the hard work he put in. Personally, I'd been on a bit of a downer at the time because Newtown had been put out of the NSW rugby league competition at the end of 1983. I was still working as a signwriter then and I was lucky that I could pour my sporting interest into training this young amateur kid with an unbelievable hunger to succeed. It took my mind off the death of my football team. I'm 70 next year and I'd followed Newtown ever since I could walk across the road from the council flats to Erskineville Oval watching their great players such as Gordon Clifford, Henry Holloway, Dick Poole, Frank Farrington. It's so sad that age catches up with everybody. Frank was such a rugged prop and a top-class heavyweight boxer. Now he's 88 and on a walking frame. Q: What's your worst memory from boxing? A: Any time a fighter gets hurt. It's a tough sport. I remember a really good little boxer from America named Chuck Wilburn came to Sydney to fight Brisbane's Hector Thompson in 1976. He trained at Ern McQuillan's gym in Newtown. I used to drive Chuck home to the place he was staying. I got to know him real well. Chuck was going strong in the fight, but Hector wore him down and Chuck tired badly and finally collapsed in the last round. When you see the stretcher come out at the fights it leaves you with a rotten feeling in the gut. I went to the hospital to see if Chuck was OK. I waited for hours to make sure he was all right but in the morning the doctors came out and said Chuck had passed away. Gone, just like that. #Grantlee Kieza's new book, Banks, about the founding father of Australia, Joseph Banks will be released next month. It is published by HarperCollins/ABC Books.
