21.01.2022 Don't let this common weakness plague your performance Strengthening the midline will help you avoid injury. The midline refers to the groin, adductors, and vastus medialis (VMO) and is commonly overlooked in your everyday linear training program. ... As strength and conditioning coaches, issues arising from inhibited adductors would be one of the most common. Tight and restricted, sure but for the most part athletes who have experienced 'tightness' is in fact weakness. These observations come from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where this leads to injuries, such as strained groins, knee symptoms and tracking issues. Here are just a few essential exercises to incorporate into your training. Copenhagen (As seen) Lateral Lunge Split Squat Lying Cable Adduction Step Up Reverse Lunge These will help you become more dynamic in your movement on the mat, improve your strength at the end range and help you avoid these common injury trends. @pratley @willp.gunton #fightersperformance #fightconditioning #boxing #judo #bjj #muaythai #athleteperformance #championthefighter #sportsperformance #brazilianjiujitsu #wrestling See more

18.01.2022 Explosive med ball exercises Force generated through rotation is exemplified within most sports - especially combat sports involving throwing, kicking, punching, sweeping and change of direction. It can be tempting to start with a flashy med ball rotation exercise often seen on social media. Often overlooked are the exercises that create a foundation of stability to ensure correct movement patterns and recruitment of muscle. ... Ultimately increasing the recruitment of muscle through the kinetic chain will increase your efficiency and enhancing generation of power, while also reducing risk of injury. Working from the ground up is a great way to isolate links in the chain, adding movements and reactions at the higher end of progressions. #fightersperformance @JordanLevoux @pratley #strengthandconditioning #FPP #strengthtraining #fitness #fightconditioning #competition #performancetraining #strength #conditioning #boxing #judo #bjj #muaythai #workouts #weightloss See more

16.01.2022 Open Crush Grip Defined as ‘open’ because the fingers and thumb can’t completely close around the object. This grip is fundamental to any grappling sport and improving it will directly affect your ability to control natural leverage points of the body. ... The most common way to improve this is to train with ‘obscure objects’, which prevent the opposing interlocking of the fingers and thumb and make it harder to retain the grip on the object. Developing the Open Crush Grip will give you another level of grip strength, more specific to your sport as a grappler. #fightersperformance #strengthandconditioning #strengthtraining #fitness #fightconditioning #competition #performancetraining #strength #conditioning #boxing #judo #bjj #muaythai #workouts #weightloss #fightcamp #athleteperformance #championthefighter #sportsperformance #physicalpreperation #brazilianjiujitsu #grappling #wrestling #champion See more

16.01.2022 The best story of combat sport! We are big ambassadors of building heroes in our community! Not all of these people would call themselves 'athletes', 'fighters', or 'in shape', but every single one of them has a strong reason to improve their health, performance and shoot for their personal goals. ... I'm most honoured to have worked supported parents wanting to improve their performance, so they could lead from the front, competing and training beside their children. Even amongst a mountain of work, leading a multi-million dollar company through multiple timezones, this man seems to prioritise the support and interests of his kids before anything else. He finds time to train his strength and conditioning to complement and support his BJJ. He sets a fantastic example, striving to always be better in his career, health and performance. I've got a few stories of amazing parents, like @gregyatman, who are training hard to set a phenomenal example for the next generation. It's so exciting to be a part of this man's story, but inadvertently the story of a couple of future champions in the sport and in life. Kids look up to their parents, and they're always taking note. 14.01.2022 Are you one dimensional? The core works as one unit to produce power through a stable chain... Conventional strength training usually lends itself to very linear exercises, like squat, bench, deadlift and pullup. ... Before we can maximise power through a strong core, we need to be able to stabilise it. Types of exercises include carries, rollouts, chops/lifts, bridges and anti-rotational presses like the Half Kneeling Wood Chop shown above. @pratley @oh_tom #fightersperformance #strengthandconditioning #fightconditioning #performancetraining #strength #conditioning #boxing #judo #bjj #muaythai #workouts #fightcamp #athleteperformance #championthefighter #sportsperformance #physicalpreperation #brazilianjiujitsu #grappling #wrestling See more

14.01.2022 Work around your injuries. There is always progress to be made (Even for an injured coach). Six months ago a car took me out while I was riding my motorbike. It turned ACROSS my lane, into an adjacent street causing a T-bone collision. ... When trying to avoid the collision I pushed my motorbike away, executed a perfect breakfall and scrambled to avoid going under the car. The top of my head hit the middle of the cars hub cap! Imagine what that would have looked like if I didn’t have a grapplers neck... but instead I spun on my back to a complete stop like a ninja turtle I'm lucky my neck and my spine have been prepared for collision impacts since forever (maybe not those at 60kmph). Since then, I haven’t used it as an excuse not to train. There are always aspects you can be working on, and one of the benefits of having a strength and conditioning coach programming for you is being able to shift tact as soon as something unexpected like this comes up. It would have been easy to say, My neck and spine are fooked, I can’t train and give up. I could have resigning myself to the fact I would never fight again. There were times I felt like it, but I knew it would be true if I believed it. I may have not been able to load my spine with a barbell for that time, but I'm glad I could rely on @mick_byers to adjust things accordingly to keep me on track. The last thing I wanted to be doing after writing 25+ programs is to write my own, while I also doubted my own ability to push through. Time, nor injury will be used as an excuse to put my health and performance on hold. #neverstandstill #fightersperformance #strengthandconditioning #FPP #strengthtraining #fitness #fightconditioning #competition #performancetraining #strength #conditioning #boxing #judo #bjj #muaythai #workouts #weightloss See more

12.01.2022 |Episode 14 - Joseph Coyne| ||Fighters Performance Podcast|| Explosive power and speed are crucial for fight athletes. Many fundamental movements of combat sports require an explosive component to be effective. ... The most recognised fighters harness these qualities to connect with a lethal knee, evade an opponents attack or deliver the knockout blow. Becoming the best at combat sport requires training the qualities that contribute to these movements. Joseph Coyne discusses plyometric training which involves exercises that are characterised by explosive power and speed. They include jumps, bounds, sprints, change of direction drills, and med ball throw exercises. Plyometric training is considered advanced because athletes need to have proficient strength and stability through any movement pattern before adding any explosive component. Coyne shares his experience training these qualities in athletes with Chinese Olympic track and field team, Chinese Olympic lifting team, and now as the performance director at UFC Performance Institute. We talk about how he incorporates plyometric exercises in warm-ups for training and competition, use them to improve performance, and how they will help us avoid injury. 11.01.2022 A belt will limit a fighters ability to transfer force effectively. This statement isn't entirely true, but hear me out. Stop training to see more weight on the bar, and start training to develop better movement skills to transfer that force effectively and efficiently. ... Get these basics right first. Even powerlifting coaches will ensure their athletes can move efficiently without this tool. Not every exercise should be or needs to completed with a belt on. A powerlifter competes in that belt, and this is why their fundamental lifts are built upon it! This accessory isn't for holding your guts in, making you look slimmer or create the illusion that you know what you're doing. "Awh, but my back hurts" - Most likely because you haven't learnt to brace effectively and control the lower trunk and the position of the pelvis through the appropriate movement pattern. It's a proprioceptive device, which you brace against to improve the tension created through the lower trunk. "Wearing a belt without developing a strong understanding and application of the fundamentals of bracing will limit your ability to transfer force effectively". It's going to limit your progression, not only in strength training but in your sport. Learning to brace correctly will improve the effectiveness of any fighter. #bjj #submission #bjjvideos #jiujitsu #flograppling #martialarts #grappling #blackbelt #nogi #oss #bjjwiki #bjjtraining #judo #wrestling #submissionwrestling #brazilianjiujitsu #drilltokill #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing See more

10.01.2022 Are you wasting your time on the foam roller? The prescription of myofascial release should be a case by case basis. It's good for: ... Down-regulating the neuromuscular system. Temporary release of musculature. Reducing DOMS Reducing Peripheral Fatigue There are optimal times and places to use these in your training program. After a big training session in the evening to downregulate the neuromuscular system so you can sleep. Applied in small doses to the specific musculature when necessary before a training session. E.g. On the internal rotators before Front Squat (Because it will downregulate the neuromuscular system). Within a recovery session hours after a big training session. Myofascial release encourages blood flow, reducing the effect of DOMS. In a recover session to increase the perception of being recovered (No studies show it reduces actual fatigue). Accurately target specific areas in need of release, but keeping in mind that attacking the same area may indicate a bigger underlying issue at play like a chronic postural issue caused by an inefficient movement pattern. The effects of myofascial release are purely on a neural level and only temporary. Physically changing the fascial lines on a physical level takes hundreds of pounds of pressure, and more than we are able to produce through any self-myofascial release techniques. Happy releasing everybody. #fightersperformance #bjj #submission #bjjvideos #jiujitsu #martialarts #grappling #blackbelt #nogi #judo #wrestling #submissionwrestling #brazilianjiujitsu #drilltokill #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing #submission #fightersperformance #championthefighter #martialarts See more

08.01.2022 "Rome wasn't built in a day, But the bricks were laid every hour." When I was shooting for the Olympic Games, I would write a note to myself every morning. It was describing what I saw when I looked off of the podium when receiving a gold medal. ... Whenever I would reach into my pocket during the day, I would feel this small piece of paper, and it would remind me of the overarching goal, but also the more minor things I needed to complete that day that would bring me closer to that goal. I had five smaller goals that I would do each day, which if I could complete, would make me that athlete which could stand atop that podium. Those are the bricks that would build my vision. 05.01.2022 The person who creates the most tension lifts the most* Ever wondered why Olympic lifters use lifting shoes, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and chalk? These tools help maximise tension and contact with the bar or the floor to maximise the application of force on the weight being lifted. ... Shoes are flat on the bottom to maximise friction and are firmly fitted to support the shape of the foot and support the ankle through a wide range of motion. Knee sleeves hold the joint rigid enough to track the knee through a natural range and flexible enough help maximise stretch reflex in end range. The lifting belt helps the lifter maximise intra-abdominal pressure, as they breathe and help engage muscles that maintain a stacked trunk (neutral position) and pelvic stability. Chalk mitigates the effects of sweat to help you maintain friction between the hand and the bar. Wrist wraps... you get the point. For fighters, these things have a time and a place depending on the lifters experience, strength, weaknesses and training goals. If the lack of tension is restricting you from providing the outcome necessary of the lift, then you may want to explore the tools necessary to assist you in achieving the results you set out for. An excellent example of a limiting factor might be your grip strength fatiguing before you finish deadlifts. If grip strength fails you may not be able to apply enough stimulus to the glutes and hamstrings, you forfeit the purpose of doing this exercise. In this case, you might use straps to get through remaining sets to maximise the desired effect on the hamstrings. There is a fine balance. Force must be created in combat sport without using these pieces of equipment, and therefore, this must form the basis of our training. Use these tools sparingly #fightersperformance #championthefighter #combatsports #boxing #kickboxing #judo #judoka #Bjj #combatsport #chellenge See more

04.01.2022 Dead bug This exercise is a staple for building control and stability in the pelvis. Developing strength and control through the hips will heavily influence what larger muscle groups and working. ... When the pelvis is anterior tilted, the abdominals and the hip extensors (glutes and hamstrings) are elongated, which makes them difficult to engage at 100%. This puts pressure on the opposing muscle group, in this case the glutes and back are put under stress and strain. This one is a must for anyone sitting in their chair at a desk for the greatest part of the day. Press your lower back down head on the ground draw your lats down Keep toes up and in let your back strain tense the upper abs lose alignment of torsoe stop breathing Pelvic alignment is most important for transferring force and maximising efficiency of movement. 03.01.2022 What exercises are most important and most appropriate for your sport? The word 'functional' may refer to the practicality and usefulness of exercise to create adaptation necessary to improve movements used in your sport. Exercises have been categorised into six major movement patterns based on their biomechanical demands. The prime movement patterns of your sport will become a vital reference to prioritise exercises in your progra...m. Grappling sports have large emphasis on pulling, and therefore exercises that develop these movement patterns are prioritised within programming and would be defined as more 'functional' and more practical for the sport. A few ways to develop these movement patterns 1. Prioritise exercises that are based on movement patterns most important for your sport. 2. Complete exercises that put the most stress on the body first. 3. Choose exercise variations appropriate to your level. 4. Increase intensity and volume appropriately. 5.
