24.01.2022 The Great Barrier Reef was showing only modest recovery in coral cover before it was hammered by its third mass bleaching event in five years, the latest annual survey by the Australian Institute of Marine Science reveals.

23.01.2022 Some good news at the end of your day! We strongly opposed this approval, writing submissions over the years. We now welcome this win for our Reef. Sussan Ley MP ... https://www.theguardian.com//plan-to-bulldoze-almost-2000h

22.01.2022 Its been a terrible week for Adani - not sure a coal port rebrand will help!

22.01.2022 Prof Terry Hughes: "Are we buying time for the reef or are we buying time for the fossil fuel industry so that its inevitable decline is just postponed? A more rational approach should be to stop the emissions. What do you think of this study looking at interventions aiming to mitigate the impacts of global heating on corals?

21.01.2022 ADD YOUR VOICE NOW The Climate Act Now Climate Change Bill has been referred to a Parliamentary inquiry. Make a submission below https://www.aph.gov.au/ClimateChangeBills2020 This will be the first parliamentary inquiry into why Australia should commit and legislate Net Zero by 2050 and why the legal framework proposed in the Climate Change Bill will assist every sector in assessing the risks, adaptation and resilience planning that is needed. We encourage EVERYONE to make a submission to the inquiry so that we can demonstrate to Government and to Parliament the need to legislate Net Zero by 2050, putting in place sensible climate policies.

21.01.2022 We demand an end to the destruction of our unceded territory. We demand Adani Australia abandon their Carmichael mine project immediately. We want them out, we want them to pack up and leave our tribal lands.

19.01.2022 Instead of using this once in a generation opportunity to rebuild from COVID-19 with clean jobs in cheap renewable energy, the Australian government wants to throw millions of our taxpayer dollars at dirty gas. If we have any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5C and giving our Reef the best chance for the future, we cannot allow this to happen. Our government must rebuild with clean jobs. 19.01.2022 Were now on alert for an upcoming La Nina event. What does this mean for our Reef? The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has you covered

18.01.2022 REEF HEALTH UPDATE: Great Barrier Reef Long-Term Monitoring Program. Coral reefs can be incredibly resilient but their ability to recover from disturbances is being set back as climate change drives increasingly frequent coral bleaching events - and more severe cyclones and other weather patterns. Our Reef and the thousands of jobs it supports requires urgent climate leadership to transition to clean renewable energy.

18.01.2022 GOOD NEWS: Annastacia Palaszczuk MPs government will invest $500 million in publicly owned renewables. This is so important to: create thousands of jobs in clean industries reduce carbon emissions to help give our Great Barrier Reef a healthy future. This win is thanks to people across the Sunshine State pushing our representatives for climate leadership - for our Reef and our future.... Cameron Dick MP Dr Anthony Lynham MP Leeanne Enoch MP

18.01.2022 Today the QLD Government announced it will establish at least 3 Renewable Energy Corridors in QLD. We congratulate QLD on this fantastic step forward! These corridors will: Create jobs to for regional Queenslanders Deliver cheaper electricity And safe guard our Reefs future! ... This shows that QLD is serious about transitioning to clean energy and lowering emissions Go QLD!

18.01.2022 The Australian government is looking to weaken already inadequate environmental laws - so weve joined with 13 conservation groups to write to UNESCO. World Heritage sites like our Great Barrier Reef need to be protected by both federal and state governments.

17.01.2022 Were stewards of a globally significant World Heritage site that is loved the world over. It is shameful and embarrassing that were subjecting our Reef to such damaging fishing, particularly when its under such intense pressure from marine heat waves driven by global warming. In QLD? Take action - write to your local candidates using our handy online tool (in the comments )

17.01.2022 Welcome to Cairns, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP! AMCS Reef volunteers joined groups from across FNQ demanding smart, sustainable stimulus to protect our Reef, rainforest and regional jobs. Green Blue Recovery now Craig Crawford MP Michael Healy MP... Look out for us on Win News tonight

17.01.2022 Wow. We know that Adani cannot be trusted with our Reef or groundwater - but now a court has found that they engaged in "unconscionable conduct" and "exploitative" and "dishonest" behaviour including exploiting customers of their Abbot Point coal port.

17.01.2022 Do you live in Cairns? Come join our amazing team of Reef-loving locals, meet like minded people and make a real difference! Join our Cairns Volunteer meeting this Tuesday 8th September 5.30-6.30 pm, 27 Greenslopes Street Cairns.

17.01.2022 Nutrient overload caused by excess agricultural runoff can seriously harm coastal marine ecosystems, triggering algal blooms that emit toxins and rob marine life of oxygen. https://www.upi.com//Climate-change-worsens/6881597665630/

16.01.2022 Well said Tony! As we approach the QLD October Election, politicians are listening to us, now more than ever. Add your voice, contact your local candidates using our helpful online tool fightforourreef.org.au/qldvotes

15.01.2022 Today is the first ever World Manta Day! To celebrate, were basking in the glory of this unique beauty, spotted at Lady Elliot Island on our Great Barrier Reef. Fondly known as Inspector Clouseau, this is the only known pink manta ray in the world, with scientists suspecting that the rosy complexion is a genetic mutation in the pigment of the skin. ... : Kristian Laine Photography (kristianlainephotography.com) #WorldMantaDay

14.01.2022 Has anyone spotted Zac Effron out on the Reef recently? https://bathurstonlinenews.com.au/zac-efron-visits-great-b/

13.01.2022 Yep! Plus... Traditional Owners? No fracking on our land Reef tourism operators? We want climate action Majority of Australians? Renewables are the way to go. ... So why is the Morrison government announcing $52.9 million of taxpayer money towards propping up the gas industry? This is terrible news because gas is a polluting fossil fuel and just like coal, its driving up temperatures. Australia could be a wind and solar superpower with the right leadership. Agree? Add your voice to the petition in the comments below.

10.01.2022 You love to see it

10.01.2022 Join us tonight for a livestream about bycatch and fisheries in our Great Barrier Reef. Live Q&A session will follow. RSVP below! https://www.facebook.com/events/401406394472608/

09.01.2022 Great news for our Reef and the thousands of Queenslanders who rely on Reef tourism for their livelihoods. From 1 December, people from across most of Australia can visit to connect with this beautiful ecosystem - and commit to fight for its future.

09.01.2022 Cairns community groups came together yesterday to sound the alarm on global warming before the state election and celebrate the regional launch of the multi-faith organisation Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC)

09.01.2022 Queenslanders go to the polls on 31 October. Will you be the voice for turtles and all the precious wildlife of our Great Barrier Reef? Use this link to email candidates vying for your vote this election >> http://fightforourreef.org.au/qldvotes

08.01.2022 react if you love nudibranchs! One of the many weird and wonderful creatures that call our Great Barrier Reef home. Do you know what sort of nudibranch this beauty is? COMMENT below

08.01.2022 Did you know that the Bramble Cay melomys a native rodent found on a coral cay in the northern Great Barrier Reef was officially declared extinct by the Australian Government in 2019, although it was last seen in 2009. The extinction of Australias Bramble Cay melomys has been singled out for criticism in a United Nations report on the state of biodiversity across the world.

07.01.2022 In the absence of federal leadership on clean energy climate solutions, states are stepping up

07.01.2022 2020 was dominated by COVID grief and climate chaos. Here, three Great Barrier Reef tourism workers explain why they are diversifying their careers so they can continue to give back to the Reef - the iconic treasure that has shaped and supported their lives.

07.01.2022 We welcome Federal Environment Minister Sussan Leys actions to protect the Great Barrier Reef and Reef wildlife from unsustainable fishing. Poor practices in the Queensland Government-managed East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery (ECIFFF) have led to the deaths of thousands of endangered sharks, sawfish, dugongs, dolphins and turtles on the Great Barrier Reef. The Environmental Defenders Office, on behalf of us at AMCS, wrote to Minister Ley alleging the Queensland Government ...had failed to meet Condition 9 of the Declaration of an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation Queensland ECIFFF, in December 2018. The Queensland Government then failed to address these concerns after being notified of this failure. Minister Ley has revoked the export permit of the Queensland Government-managed ECIFFF under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. This is because the Palaszczuk Government has failed to meet sustainability conditions for the ECIFFF agreed upon by both governments two years ago. It means commercial fishers operating in the fishery will not be able to export seafood internationally, but does not affect domestic trade. Exports include shark fin from sharks caught within the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, black jewfish bladders exported for use in the cosmetics industry, and mullet roe.

07.01.2022 Adani has been forced to spend even more of their own cash to get their dirty coal project off the ground - failing to secure support from existing hauling companies. More than 75 companies have cut ties with Adani. They know that this new thermal coal project is bad news for our Reef and our future - and are joining the #StopAdani movement on the right side of history. Which company will be next to cut ties with Adani?

07.01.2022 Most people come to the Reef to see Nemo but if you’re lucky, you might also see Patrick

07.01.2022 Today has been a terrible day for Adani. After Queenslands Supreme Court ordered them to pay more than $100 million in damages for the conduct towards coal exporters at Abbot Point, more financial institutions have cut ties with Adani. The Industrial Bank of Korea as well as Korea Investment & Securities have ruled out supporting Adanis port which is on the doorstep of our Great Barrier Reef.

06.01.2022 This. Eminent scientists calling a spade a spade. Decades of rigorous science has shown that Reef water pollution has dire consequences for our precious turtles, dugongs and the ecosystem as a whole. Its time for certain politicians to listen - and act - on this advice and stand up for the future of our Reef and the thousands of jobs it sustains.

06.01.2022 Jemma Craig is a dive instructor on the Great Barrier Reef. Until recently, her parents owned and operated a crocodile and marine life habitat on the island, called Marineland Melanesia. They sadly lost their jobs and business due to COVID-19. Read Jemmas story here: https://www.marineconservation.org.au/as-a-far-north-queen/

06.01.2022 Unbelievable Clive Palmer's proposed Central Queensland Coal project is just 10 km from the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. On top of fuelling further climate damage, federal government-appointed scientists say there are no ways to mitigate the damage from discharging coal pollution into sensitive areas. Federal and state governments must not give this disastrous project the green light.

05.01.2022 Well done, Warren Entsch! The Far North Queensland MPs climate push comes after years of work on the ground in Cairns, with Traditional Owners, tourism operators and passionate Reef-lovers pushing for action.

05.01.2022 "I had never considered myself an activist, but our daughters birth, amidst a time of coral bleachings, fires and drought, was a powerful wake up call." Check out this moving piece from Far North Queensland dad Dave Springett, whose business relies on the dive industry "Im an average dad, and as handy as I am with superglue, I cant fix climate change or the challenges of a COVID recession by myself. ... "But I can use my voice and demand the major parties get serious about tackling climate change with a renewable-led recovery."

04.01.2022 Following last weeks $145 million Renewable Energy Corridors announcement, this is more great news on clean energy from the QLD government Projects like this are good for jobs in regional QLD good for reducing pollution and protecting the future of our Reef.

04.01.2022 Clarissa's recent diving trip has got her feeling motivated to Fight For Our Reef! 02.01.2022 A sad day for our Reef with the passing of marine conservation legend John Rumney. Our thoughts are with his family and community. Rest in peace

01.01.2022 Well done to AMCS Cairns Reef volunteer Jemma Craig for telling her story From growing up on a Great Barrier Reef island to losing her job in the disruption of COVID-19, Jemma knows that tackling climate change can create thousands of jobs in clean energy and help protect the future of our beautiful Reef.

01.01.2022 Join us next week for an update about our Reef's health from Dr David Wachenfeld. RSVP below.

01.01.2022 We are disappointed to hear that QLD LNP are promising to review and obviously weaken QLDs tree clearing laws meaning more sediment pollution flowing into the Reef. https://debfrecklington.com.au//lnp-to-deliver-fair-and-ba
