24.01.2022 The spectre remains for Our Great Australian Bight until it is protected.
18.01.2022 Ten years ago, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig explode, killing 11 crew members and starting the largest ocean oil spill in history. Professor Donald Boesch was a member President Obama oil spill commission. In this piece, he argues for phasing out offshore fossil fuel production.
17.01.2022 Finally, its all over technically for Equinor.
15.01.2022 Thanks to Surfing Australia for recognising the significance of what has been achieved in the Great Australian Bight. Their ASB GREATER GOOD AWARD is for a per...son or group who in the past year has given back to Australian surfing through extraordinary results in a charitable, humanitarian, environmental, or philanthropic cause. In the words of Wilderness Society SA Director Peter Owen... "This award is for the thousands of people who stood together, as part of the Great Australian Bight Alliance and said NO to risky deep-sea oil drilling and the expansion of the fossil fuel industry into the Bight. It's inspiring what has been achieved and an example of what is possible when the community unites. With the oil companies retreating, we must now move to protect the amazing marine wilderness of the Great Australian Bight for good." If you missed the show on TV yesterday, our award is from 10-12 minutes in the link below. Congratulations everyone!
15.01.2022 "Offshore drilling is still as dirty and dangerous as it was 10 years ago." --A new report from Oceana
13.01.2022 Only one year ago, a record-breaking 50 blue whales were spotted in the Great Australian Bight! If there’s any proof that the Bight deserves protection against Equinor’s deep-sea oil exploration, this is it. Learn more wilderness.org.au/GreatAustralianBight... This was an astounding discovery for both scientists and whale-watchers alike. Blue whales haven’t always been spotted in the Bight and are known for being unpredictable and quick to move around. In fact, this remarkable sighting only happened by chance. The whales were identified by tuna spotters who were flying over the Bight to see where tuna were located for fishing. The Bight is bursting with life. We probably haven’t even discovered the full extent of its biodiversity - in 2018, researchers found 400 invertebrate species entirely new to science! If we haven’t been able to spot gigantic blue whales in the past, imagine what other kinds of rare and special creatures we’re yet to find? Wilderness Society SA is taking the fight to the Federal Court - challenging NOPSEMA’s approval of Equinor’s Environment Plan to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight. We're up against a government and business with deep pockets. Please donate today to join the thousands of others who know what has happened here isn’t right wilderness.org.au/Donate-Bight-Challenge There’s simply too much life at stake. @lukestevens44
12.01.2022 The public reason for Equinor's decision to not proceed was commercial concerns. There could also be a confluence of events creating not only unnaceptable commercial risk for Equinor, but also an overall negative outlook for success. It is useful to examine other potential reasons to ensure that the next bid to drill and degrade our pristine Great Australian Bight does not proceed.
10.01.2022 We managed to frighten away Equinor from the Great Australian Bight but Equinor and other fossil fuel companies now have their eyes on bigger prizes off the Nor...th-West coast of Western Australia. 10.01.2022 "People have to change the way they see this so that they know there's this invisible and toxic component of oil that changes marine life." Igal Berenshtein and Claire Paris-Limouzy, University of Miami
08.01.2022 Over 12 months ago the fight started to stop oil drilling by Equinor in Our Great Australian Bight. Today the news is Equinor, the fourth multinational oil company to try, will not proceed. Our Bight is not for sale to anyone.
08.01.2022 Hi everyone, here is an update A draft proposal to form a kayaking and paddle craft group at Wallaroo has been written If you want more information and are interested in making a contribution to the final proposal, please let me know.
07.01.2022 Australia's surfing community has spear headed the campaign to ban drilling in Our Great Australian Bight. Hats off to our surfers
05.01.2022 10 years on and wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico is still feeling the disastrous effects of BP's oil spill. This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of why we must continue the fight to keep risky deep-sea oil drilling out of our #GreatAustralianBight. #FightForTheBight
05.01.2022 These dolphins were spotted playing with a pair of whales off the coast of Southern Australia.
04.01.2022 Did #DrFinkel factor this disaster in his audit of #NOSEPMA 's decision making capability of #Equinor 's environment management plan for drilling in #TheGrightAustralianBight? Did #NOPSEMA ? Say NO to drilling in the Great Australian Bight by donating to the #WildernessSociety for their Federal Court case to stop drilling. #FightfortheBight
