23.01.2022 New published research investigating the impact of training scheduling on sleep in academy footballers - with 2 authors from Figtree Physio! Main findings than recommended values ... need for education/interventions Considerations for the Future Many youth teams train late to accommodate facility usage, age group after age group. But many kids going from primary to secondary schools pick up injuries. Growth, new stresses, increase pitch size etc BUT also irregular sleep patterns/recovery - we all need to do better! Georgia, Stella and team https://journals.lww.com//Influence_of_Training_Schedules_

23.01.2022 Want to hear fresh views on injury prevention, player welfare and youth development in ? Check out this great interview with Junior Matildas + Sydney FC physio, Stella Veith Oh she also works in the clinic in her spare time ...

23.01.2022 A very interesting new study looking at the role of arthroscopy for the management of meniscus injury. Key findings: At five-year follow-up participants in the intervention group (who had a partial meniscectomy) had a very slightly increased risk of radiographic knee osteoarthritis.....they did not appear to have gained any additional benefit from their surgery on their knee pain, other symptoms or function compared with placebo surgery.... The result of this study suggest that clinicians should exercise caution when considering referring older players for an arthroscopy. It is however important to highlight that this study does have some limitations....It does not include younger people (age range 35-65 years) or those with a traumatic meniscal tear. As a result, the results of this study are not likely to be generalisable to elite players or many younger players.

21.01.2022 Being adequately and appropriately fueled for sport and recovery is very important. Two great new articles have just been released on the topic. One is a new UEFA consensus statement while the other is on nutrition from a coaches perspective....the great Arsene Wenger! Check them out... https://www.uefa.com//0262-10b3a43fd486-f4484edc6615-1000/

21.01.2022 We have had the pleasure of being involved as mentors for the brilliant and hard working, Em Black, the designer of the Yoga for Surfing program. The Yoga for Surfing warm-up has been designed as a part of Em's Year 12 Senior Thesis Project (a 12 month long project completed through the Big Picture Program). As a 500hr registered yoga teacher and ocean lover, Em designed this project to combine her love of surfing, the ocean, yoga and healing the body through m...ovement. Please check it out....it really is a phenomenal piece of work by a talented practitioner.

20.01.2022 In these COVID-19 times, we have all had to make changes to how we operate and care for each other. Not all of these changes have been bad......Telehab has been an excellent addition to our clinic! More info here

19.01.2022 The best exercise is the one that gets done consistently Understanding that there is poor compliance to the 11+ injury prevention program universally, Matt ...Whalan and colleagues set about modifying the 11+ program to see if they could make a difference on injury rates in football. And they did. They discovered, amongst many things, that performing part 2 of the 11+ program during the cool down that compliance to the 11+ program increased and severe injuries (28+ time loss days) decreased compared to its usual prescription. I reviewed this article, and another by Matt Whalan, for issue 2 of The Learn.Physio Research Reviews. 11.01.2022 No its not the new terminator spine. 5 surgeries later and this is the Xray of one locked up lumbar spine. Fusion/fixation surgeries are considered "heavy duty" for spinal interventions. The multiple vertebrae segments and SIJ involvement required for this patient spinal stabiliy means we have a long recovery ahead to regain strength and function. The journey continues... #lumbarspine #lowbackpain #lumbarfusion #physiotherapy #physio #lumbarsurgery #backrehab #rehabilitation #rehab #corestrength @ Figtree Physiotherapy

01.01.2022 It was fantastic to be on The Athlete Development Show discussing how to keep athletes, especially youth athletes, available in sport. 01.01.2022 Happy Friday! With the ongoing situation in Australia we have had numerous conversations regarding the best safety practices and it is hard for everyone to get sensible and consistent information. Our current position, based on the most up to date evidence (not just opinion) is:... 1. The best strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission is social distancing, practice safe and regular universal hygiene measures (washing hands etc) and staying home if you have symptoms or have been in high risk zones. 2. Masks can reduce transmission by 70% IF you think you may have COVID-19. Masks will reduce your risk of catching COVID-19 by 20-30% if someone has it that you come in contact with. Our message is the same as the last 6 months - if sick....STAY HOME! 3. Safety strategies need to be assessed on an at risk basis. i.e. higher risk = stricter strategies. The Illawarra has very few active cases and is NOT identified by any government authority. 4. Concerns about having adequate supply of resources, such as masks, remains. Be thoughtful about your usage. Overall - if you are sick or have been in high risk hotspots - STAY HOME....then you don’t need a mask. At the moment our Conditions of Entry are consistent with scientific advice AND the risk associated with the Illawarra. As always, reach out if you have any questions!
