25.01.2022 Tarps off and they’ve done a great job! Whilst they still haven’t killed the bloody skeleton weed, there is not one other weed in the beds that have been covered. I’ve turned the top layer of soil with the power harrow, splashed some water around and will now cover the soil again for another three weeks. At that point we pass the likely risk of frost in this area and pumpkin seedlings go in. #figtreefarmweejasper #tarps #weeds #weedcontrol #sprayfree #chemicalfree #canberra #pumpkins

24.01.2022 Not farm related, but post season family time instead. We had a great time checking out the balloons this morning #figtreefarmweejasper #family #balloons #hotairballoon #hotairballoonfestival #cbr #awfulphotography

20.01.2022 So apparently I’m a better farmer when I do nothing. This bed of Garnet Giant Mustard was a failure back in January as the soil was way too hot for germination but now that the season has finished the plants are loving life. Check out the amazing texture on those gorgeous purple leaves. #figtreefarmweejasper #mustard #garnet #garnetgiant #texture #pretty #tasty #spicy #hot #abandonedgarden

19.01.2022 For some reason I’ve never had much luck with tomatillos - Until now. Usually for me these attract bugs on a crazy scale, they get to three quarters in size and turn to mush from the incessant insect pressure. This season though, the bugs concentrated on tomatoes and I’ve been able to collect buckets and buckets of tomatillos. These gorgeous plants grow their fruit in a paper husk that looks like a lantern. They’re ripe for picking when they grow big enough to split that hus...k (though they’re still good when the get close to that size) I’m not great at explaining flavours but tasting them with @umami.tsunami666 yesterday, as well as being crisp and zesty, the boys thought they were nutty with a Parmesan flavour. On top of that, @ramenboy3000 tasted the husk and said it tasted like tea leaves. I’m so excited to see what they do with them at @pilotrestaurant #figtreefarmweejasper #tomatillo #tomatillos #purple #yellow #green #fresh #zesty #tasty #yum #delicious #sogood #uncommon #easytogrow

15.01.2022 I love our local community! I contacted @aforagersheart to see if she could use our garlic bulbs that are too small for sale or to save as seed. Not only did she give them a new home but she gave us this incredible rhubarb and lemon cake in return. So delicious! #figtreefarmweejasper #aforagersheart #garlic #small #cake #rhubard #lemon #delicious #tasty #yum #community #neighbours

14.01.2022 Scapes for days. Hardneck garlic sends these flower spikes (scapes) up just before it’s ready for harvest. Allowed to flower, these spikes produce true garlic seed (called bulbils) which look like tiny garlic cloves. Removing the scapes allows the garlic to expend more energy into the bulb rather than producing seed. These scapes are a wonderful ingredient if you can get your hands on them - mild garlic flavour and the texture of asparagus. I’ll keep picking these as they emerge and we’re aiming at a harvest date about two weeks away. #figtreefarmweejasper #garlic #scapes #garlicscapes #delicious #tasty #sogood #rare #onceayear #canberra #weejasper #cbr #cbrfood #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood

14.01.2022 If you look at Instagram, it looks like all we’ve done is take holidays since the farm closed down for last season. I can assure you we’ve been very busy and thoroughly deserve a week in Tathra. We have some history down here and try to come back every so often. It’s our first trip back since their devastating bushfires last year and despite regrowth, the scars are still very visible. We genuinely love this part of Australia, the scenery is spectacular, the people unfailingl...y pleasant and friendly. Apologies for the zoomed in, blurry photo. Trying to avoid other pub patrons in the picture. #figtreefarmweejasper #holiday #tathra #nsw #farm #beach #coast #southcoastnsw See more

13.01.2022 Family day at Fig Tree Farm. Liz and Hannah came to help out planting garlic and both had a great time. It must be said that Hannah much preferred trying out tractors and climbing in puddles on daddy’s veggie tarps rather than planting garlic but still got a few handfuls in the ground. She’s now absolutely filthy and very worn out - for a good sleep tonight #figtreefarmweejasper #garlic #planting #toddler #child #kid #twoyearsold #farm #farmkids #tractor #tractorkid #drive #orange #kubota #old #sosickofplantinggarlic

12.01.2022 So it’s New Year’s Eve again. Well 2019, you can get straight in the bin. I am so angry about the position we are in right now and how we potentially could have been better prepared had our stubborn, climate change denying Prime Minister swallowed his pride to meet with a group of retired fire chiefs and experts to listen to their warnings. Right now I have friends in two evacuation centres, family stranded on the south coast, friends with young children considering evacuati...ng their farm/home ahead of another fire and my best mates granddad is unaccounted for near Batemans Bay. The lack of leadership from the federal government is stunning but sadly hypocrisy is present in every level of government - I actually yelled at the radio today listening to @clovermoore scold the federal government on their lack of action on climate change and in the same sentence insist that tonnes of fireworks were necessary tonight despite the ongoing crisis and total fire ban in the area. @scottmorrisonmp this is your chance to stand up and be our hero. Make THIS the turning point. Let’s lead the world, make Australia the clean energy powerhouse it has the potential to be. I don’t hold out much hope of changes in the short term but I truly hope in 2020 people start to listen more to scientists and less to shock jocks and fossil fuel lobby mouthpieces. Dear 2020, please be gentle. #figtreefarmweejasper #drought #fires #nswfires #angry #sad #endoftheyear #endofthedecade #climatechange #sorryfortherant #depressed #future #climatecrisis #wherethebloodyhellareyouscomo #scottfrommarketing #leadership #whereistheleadership #standup #australia #happynewyear #newyear #2020 #newyearseve #heresatortoise

12.01.2022 Who’s jealous of my weekend? 30kg of garlic to be split, sorted and planted later this week. It’s much less than some other farmers I know are planting this season but it’s three times as much as we planted last year. My fingers are numb and are starting to blister but the hope that such an investment brings makes it all worthwhile. #figtreefarmweejasper #garlic #red #white #hardneckgarlic #softneckgarlic #plant #work #smell #delicious #amazing #favouritecrop #garlicislife

09.01.2022 When it gets so cold your frost suppression becomes part of the problem. I’ve had some chilli plants hidden away in the greenhouse, waiting to save seed once they fully ripened. Up until today I’ve been protecting them from frost with an automated early morning watering. Unfortunately, overnight it got so cold that anywhere water touched it froze. I walked in this morning to find three inch icicles on the propagation bench, sheets of ice on the walls and a solid coating of ice over the chilli plants I was trying to protect. #figtreefarmweejasper #ice #winter #cold #freeze #freezing #frozen #freezeyatitsoff #seedsaving #seedsavingfail #shishitopeppers #shishito #winterishere #winterinweejasper

09.01.2022 Sadly they’re a touch late for our CSA this year but our shishito chillies have finally kicked off. These mild, thin skinned chillies are delicious when fried until their skin blisters. A dash of salt and pepper plus lime juice or mirin makes a bar snack that edamame would be jealous of. #figtreefarmweejasper #shishito #shishitopeppers #barsnacks #delicious #tasty #yum #gorgeous #pretty #sogood #mild #spicy #notspicy #fried #mirin #lime #takethatedamame

07.01.2022 Time for some better quality photos. 07.01.2022 Incredibly dense pumpkin planting went in last week. In about three weeks time, these pumpkins will completely shade the soil and easily outcompete the weeds. With eight heirloom varieties, these guys will keep the plot ticking along through summer and hopefully produce some amazing pumpkins come autumn next year #figtreefarmweejasper #pumpkin #pumpkins #summer #vine #vines #weeds #weed #weedcontrol #delicious #heirloom #heirloompumpkin

06.01.2022 Unfortunately we couldn’t make it to one of the strikes today but it’s inspiring to see so many people attached to this cause. To those (politicians and others) who say kids should be in school rather than attending a rally, one of the most poignant signs I saw at the last climate strike had words to the effect of ‘What use is an education if the Government won’t listen to the educated.’ #climatestrike #canberra #climatechange #climatechangeisreal #dosomethingaboutit #farmingishardenoughwithouttryingtodoitinadesert

06.01.2022 And the cycle begins again. It’s been nearly three months since our last post and there has been some speculation about Fig Tree Farm and where we’re headed. A change in circumstance in the near future will see us relocate to Sydney right in the middle of what would have been our fourth CSA season. I can’t say that I’m overjoyed by the move but after the harshness of the 2018/19 season, a season or two off is definitely enticing.... However, to prevent the weeds, that we’ve worked so hard to eradicate, having a field day in our absence, a commercial crop of heirloom pumpkins are being sown for this summer and we’ll follow that with successions of cover crops until our return. Thank you to all our followers for your on going support. Local, sustainable food supply is one of the easiest and most important aspects of fighting climate change, I urge everyone to get to know your local farmers and support their efforts to bring you the freshest food available. #figtreefarmweejasper #seeds #seed #csa #farm #farmlife #newbeginnings #whatisoldisnewagain #supportlocalfarmers #canberra #cbr #cbrcsa #heirloom #pumpkins #covercrop #sydney #nsw #localfood #local

05.01.2022 Last season was brutal and we’ve been hanging out for a holiday. The better half of this partnership had a massive exam last weekend and to celebrate her achievement/decompress we headed for warmer climates. The view is a little muted by scrub but the proximity to the beach is amazing. Whale spotting on the veranda is a pretty great change of pace. 04.01.2022 It seems silly to get attached to a pair of sneakers, but after 12 years today is retirement day and I’m feeling a little emotional. These sneakers have been to 9 countries across three continents, have been up Mount Kosciuszko four times, got me through both AFP selection and six months of awful police college PT sessions. They have taken me on countless bush walks, lake walks, coast and shopping trips. These sneakers have seen me through some of the best and worst days of my life. I wonder what life events the next pair will see. #sneakers #shoes #footwear #quality #twelveyears #12years #retirement #retire @reebokau #igotmymoneysworth
