25.01.2022 This one is called My family @fijibaatthebook is from the point of view of an 8 year old boy. His mother is Indo-Fijian and his father is Scottish. I did that to personify the thought of a young person growing up with two different cultures. The mother (whose name I will reveal in Fiji-Baat 2) is holding the mail. In many families that I’ve known, women are denied opportunities. They aren’t uplifted through education and aren’t included in conversations about wealth or pr...operty. I’ve heard people say, She doesn’t need to study, she is a girl. Through this image, of the woman holding the mail, (paper) I am hoping that young people will learn from an early age that our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters need empowerment and equal opportunities. Her collar reminds me of Ruth Bader Ginsburg who passed away not long after this book was published. The mail in her hand says Dr McCreedy, 46 Walaby Way, Sydney 2000 from P. Sherman, 42 Walaby Way, Sydney - Finding Nemo (2003). The pine tree is a Norfolk Island pine that I could see from our window in Stanmore where I wrote Fiji-Baat. I drew a lot of inspiration from it. #fijibaatthebook #fijibaat #womenempowerment #girlseducationmatters #stanmore #innerwestsydney

22.01.2022 Sunday, 21 February is International Mother Language Day. As UNESCO’s tribute to the Language Movement, this day has been observed since the year 2000. In 1948, the then government of Pakistan declared Urdu to be the sole national language for both East Pakistan and West Pakistan. The people of East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh) protested. They demanded that Bangla/Bengali be one of the national languages as well. Lives were lost during the rallies. In remembrance of th...e sacrifices of these people, Language Movement Day is a public holiday in Bangladesh. @fijibaatthebook pays respect to the people who protested and to Mother Languages in Fiji and around the world. #fijibaatthebook #fijibaat #fijian #internationalmotherlanguageday #thelanguagemovement #bangladesh #fiji #vosavakaviti #fijihindustani #tamil #rotuman #rotumanlanguage #chinese #mandarin #cantonese #telugu #malayalam #gujarati #punjabi #tongan #samoan #pacific

19.01.2022 This one is called Arriving in Fiji. In 2002, on our way back from a family holiday in Australia, I heard a stranger say something on the plane that changed my idea of home and country. His was an aisle seat, and next to him was an elderly lady. From the conversations of these two Indo-Fijians I gathered that they were strangers and that the man (middle aged) was returning to Fiji after a very long time. As the aircraft began to descend, the lights at the Nadi Internation...al Airport sparkled like stars in the distance, the man said to the elderly woman in Fiji-Baat, Amma, dekho hum lon ke des aige, (Mother, look our country is here). Suddenly a warmth filled my heart and I became a little teary at 16 years of age. (Also, it is very common for Fijians to refer to strangers as Aunty, Uncle, Nau, Taciqu, Amma, Nana, Nani, Baiya, Baini; pronouns for family members) Since that trip, whenever I’ve travelled to Fiji and as we fly over the hills of Uciwai, I remember what that man said. I too sometimes repeat the words to myself, Dekho hum lon ke des aige. The hills in the illustration is inspired by the Teidamu Hills. I’ve tried to include sugarcane farms and the islands of the Mamanuca group. Cows grazing on the hills and coconut palm trees along the beach. -have you watched the sunset from the Teidamu hills? #fijibaatthebook #fijibaat #fiji #vitilevu #mamanucaislands #kingsroadfiji #matawalu #teidamu #teidamusunset #islandlife

15.01.2022 This one is called Email Received. When the young boy returns to Sydney he is pleasantly surprised by an email from his Nana. @fijibaatthebook is about language, identity and inter-generational connection. Through this book, I hope that people start appreciating the knowledge that our older generation has to share and that young people can become part of this preservation and passing on of knowledge. ... Also, in this illustration, which is after the young boy’s trip to Fiji, I’ve made him look like he has put on some weight. 09.01.2022 I’m totally stoked today! My book @fijibaatthebook is available at 15 Auckland Council Libraries in New Zealand. In the Children’s Pacific collection!!!!!!!... I’m so proud of what my first children’s book is doing out there - giving Fiji-Baat; the language that people have said is broken, the recognition it deserves. If you’re in Auckland, swipe left to see the locations Fiji Baat is stored at. Otherwise if you’d like a copy for yourself go to @myfijistore #fijibaatthebook #fijibaat #fiji #fijiislands #girmit #indenture #auckland #aucklandcity #newzealand
