24.01.2022 The ultimate athlete! We have had a bit to say about the importance of alignment in the sport horse & galloper. This amazing photo (Bree Coulson) hopefully high...lights the reason why. Look at the LF & how it’s loaded. Look at the hyperextension of the fetlock & knee! We know horses in gallop can take up to 2.5 times their body weight on a single limb (500kg horse = 1250kg per limb) This should really highlight the importance of farrier work in the sport horse & galloper.

03.01.2022 With all this wet weather we are seeing hoof abscesses every day! What is a HOOF ABSCESS?... It is an infection in the sensitive tissue of the hoof, which develops into a pocket of pus within the hoof capsule. Whilst the amount of pus is often quite small, the pressure build-up that it causes within the hoof capsule is extremely painful. Signs: Severe lameness Hoof wall may feel hot to touch. Generalised swelling at the pastern/fetlock Treatment: The aim is to locate the area of the abscess and open it up to drain. Poultice - the hoof should be poulticed to encourage thorough drainage through the hole. The poultice should be changed daily until it stops draining. Soaking the foot in an iodine/ betadine and Epsom salt bucket for 10-15 minutes should be done between poultice changes. Anti-inflammatories such as bute or meloxicam to reduce pain and inflammation. Antibiotics are not required for every case of hoof abscess. Tetanus coverage. Unfortunately not all hoof abscesses are straight forward and some can lead to some serious secondary complications or some may be stemming from a more serious underlying issue. Often xrays are the next diagnostic step if we are concerned about a more serious issue.

01.01.2022 Today we had our GRP mare officially measured at CCHP (thanks Karen Flanagan ). Unfortunately we come in at 14.2 and 3/4hh which is half an inch over official pony size. This gorgeous lady is in foal to the most handsome little stallion Rainbow Dancer BHI and is due middle of September. Hopefully her foal will get the memo and stay pony size
