08.01.2022 Scriptures: Lamentation 3:31-41 In this chapter of Lamentations, Jeremiah grieves intensely for the ruined City of Jerusalem. Yet, even as he mourns, he does no...t forget who his God is. Jeremiah recalls and proclaims the faithfulness of God. He mourns from the tragedy he is facing but he keeps his eyes on the compassion and mercy of God. The prophet was able to stand in triumph in the midst of grief because he knew who His God was and he was sure of God’s compassion. This confident assurance is shown in verse 33: For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. Let us also be confident in the truth that it is never in God’s heart to cause suffering to His people. He does allow it, but only for our good; He uses affliction to grow us, purify us and mold us into the image of His Son. We see also in this passage that the sorrow experienced by the people of Judah is actually a result of their own sin. The affliction is not caused by God, it was brought about by the disobedience of the people of Judah. We see then that God is not the source of suffering, but He can use it to expose the sin that clings so closely to our hearts. Still, God is good because even though we experience hurt, He promises that we can endure it through the hope He gives in His restoration. He promises that the suffering is not permanent and He shows His compassion as He delivers us from it. During times of affliction, when we recognize our sin and turn back to God, He uses it to bring us from glory to glory. May whatever affliction we experience create in us a pure heart and a greater confidence in the mercy of our God.
