22.01.2022 Ben Chase at Film Sonic has just finished sound design, sound mix and dialog co-edit for a co-pro between LA company Icon Animation and Perth company Zac Creative. The project named "Yowie World" is a cartoon series featuring all the hybrid animal characters of the Yowie brand. There are 6 main characters Crag, Rumble, Nat, Boof, Ditty and Squish. They are the guardians of the natural world. This mini web series thats currently on YouTube has seven episodes. The first introd...uctory episode "Yowasis" features the whole bunch in their home territory. Followed by an episode for each of the characters and their antics. Ben worked closely with Nick Kempt, the series director, also based in Perth with Zac Creative and the composer Bryce Jacobs an Aussie who lives in LA, both with a long list of credits to their name. Using Slack, Skype, email and telephone the whole team collaborated between Perth, Melbourne and Los Angeles. Troy Zafer (Zac Creative) and Bruce Davey (Icon Pictures, producer of Braveheart) coordinated the process. The voice actors were directed by Jamie Simone at Studiopolis in LA. The first dialog edit was done by their team and then the Zac Creative and 12 Field Animation teams used this to animate to. Nine months later Ben received the first draft cuts. He proceeded to re-cut and sync the dialog to vision and then add additional takes and sounds made by the characters into the action. After the dialog edit comes the sound design. Sounds for every action and object, atmospheres, and emotive sounds for gestures and characterisation. "Sound Design is the fun part! I have the job of bringing the animators vision to the next level. Make the animation come alive with sound. A very satisfying experience." - Ben Chase. Once sound design is done Ben makes a video preview for the director Nick to approve. Then on to the composer Bryce. Back to Film Sonic for final sound design, final dialog edits and then the sound mix (including 5.1 surround). Each of the crew members has their favourite, Bens was "Cheers of a Clown" featuring Boof.
