07.01.2022 King George Square with King George retreating from battle. Previously known as Albert Square the square was widened and renamed following the death of King G...eorge V. Some little time later a statue of the dead King was erected facing City Hall. Albert Street ran between City Hall and the statue until the late 1960s when the square was redeveloped. It was at this time that the statue of the King was moved and turned around to face the square. The relocation was a direct result of comments made by Queen Elizabeth during a visit to Brisbane. It is reported that she appeared to be mildly annoyed asking Why is Grandpapa retreating? It is understood that the Queen was delighted with the relocation and the news that Grandpapa now appears to be leading his troops into battle. Unsure of pic date.
