21.01.2022 Long post but please read: We recently did some repair work on a granny flat which had a small gas heater fire. The day after the client contacted us saying she had received an electric shock and thought it may have had something to do with the work we completed (in a remote part of the house from where she received the shock).... We agreed to investigate and found that she had a faulty dishwasher. The power circuit tested fine but her switchboard only had some RCD safety switches installed. The circuit she received the electric shock off was not protected, therefore she could have potentially received a shock up to and above 50milliamps. Usually, it takes about 30 mA of current to cause respiratory paralysis. Currents greater than 75 mA cause ventricular fibrillation (very rapid, ineffective heartbeat). This condition will cause death within a few minutes unless a special device called a defibrillator is used to save the victim. Some of our repair jobs we don't even get to meet the clients which makes it hard to tell people how unsafe their homes are. Our headache as electricians is educating the public as to the importance of electrical safety and how crucial RCD safety switches are without sounding like salespeople. RCD safety switches also wear out over time, so don't be complacent thinking your 10 year old RCD will protect you as we've found some old ones to not trip when tested. Here's a recent switchboard upgrade we completed from power pole to power point. Note the RCD trip times which were noted at the testing stage. RCD safety switches in houses are essentially the same safety devices designed to save your life in an accident and up to 40% of existing homes or offices don't have these crucial safety devices fitted. Many of our call-outs are to house fires or flooded homes, often the power has to be turned off as the old style fuses or circuit breakers will not trip out even with damaged wiring or water ingress, l...eaving a potentially fatal situation. A safety switch is intended to trip out an electricity supply in the event of a current flow to earth. It can provide protection from harmful electric shocks in situations where a person comes into contact with a live electrical circuit and provides a path to earth. 17.01.2022 Apologies for the lack of posts. We've been down the coast for a couple of days in the aftermath of the fires that have been damaging the local areas of Lake Tabourie and Bawley point. These home owners were lucky enough to still have their homes, they were left without power to their homes or septic systems/Water tanks.... The community and ourselves are so thankful for the tireless work our firefighters have put in to minimise damage to the area. Today we bought a heap of water, sunscreen, panadol, sanitizer, toilet paper etc. to help out the firies in the Nerriga fires. It's little help compared to their efforts. Please donate where you can to either the communities rebuilding or the firies battling these fires. Merry Christmas to all of our customers, employees and suppliers. We replaced the box and lifted it to clear the gate post, sealed the box and now they can get their meter upgraded.... Our thermal imaging camera detects micro cracks in the panels that aren't visible to the human eye.... Micro cracks will cause a loss in power production and can also lead to panel fires. 02.01.2022 Throwback to last week when we reinstated power to this bushfire affected townhouse site in Malua Bay NSW. Some townhouses were sadly destroyed in the fires, some survived but the meter panel did not. We pre made the meter panel and then bought the posts, sheet metal and other parts locally.... Now the surviving homes occupants can move back in once the meters are installed.
