19.01.2022 He was crazy! And he would make me think he was crazy. We would be driving along in the car and he would start talking to himself. Im the baddest! Im the gr...eatest! Im a baaad man! I was thinking, Damn! Is this what boxing does to you? But I learned that he kept doing that because that was how he motivated himself. When he was getting ready to fight George Foreman, he would be talking to himself constantly: Im gonna kill him! Im gonna murder him! Im going to do this. Im going to do that. Ali was a good guy. I never once saw him get scared. Even when he fought me, when he was 38, he wasnt scared. He was talking to me all through the fight, telling me what he was going to do, trying to make me mad. But I knew him too well to fall for any of that stuff. He was the guy that gave me a job. He was the guy that taught me how to fight. He helped me understand how to do things to an opponent to make them mad. I learned all of that from being with him all those years. Can you imagine what it was like for me, aged 20-21, to be working with The Greatest? All of a sudden, you ask him if he will come to your local school and meet the kids, and he does just to make you feel good. He did that for me, he came to my town, and he lifted me way off the ground because of that. He made me feel 10ft tall. The guy was great. He made everyone feel better about themselves. He made you believe you could do anything you ever wanted to do. And he was my friend. He had charisma. He was beautiful and charming. Listen, even after I beat him in our fight in 1980, I went into his dressing room afterwards and he was lying on the bed having a rub-down because he was so sore. And I said, Ali, you know I love you. Youve always been my man. And he said, If you loved me, why did you beat me up? But he never held a grudge, even to the day he died. Even when he was sick, whenever I would see him he would fool around and say, I want Holmes! Get me Holmes! - Larry Holmes

14.01.2022 I left Jamaica to come to England but one place became another place. I lived in Tulse Hill, in Brixton and Coldharbour Lane. You needed to be strong. You had ...to be affiliated with something or someone. I got caught up in it as a lone wolf and the next thing you know, you are affiliated and you have to do stuff. If someone challenges you, you have to uphold your reputation. If youre a Brixton boy, youre a Brixton boy. You go to Stockwell or some place in Peckham, youll get killed. The first time I got shot was in Clapham. It was summer. There were good parties on the Common. Good raves. Youre looking for girls. Youre hanging about with your boys and people say, Lets go to Clapham. At that stage, you think youre invincible. You think youre a so-called bad man and you think you can do what you want. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and it kicked off. I saw things that werent right and I got shot on the move. A couple of us got shot. I got shot twice in the leg because I was running away. The second time I got shot was a bit more, a bit more... I dont want to go into details. If you live the lifestyle, if you live by the sword, you can die by the sword. There were loads of times I thought I was going to die. Since I came to London, I have had guns in my face and been kidnapped or whatever. In a way, you dont really care at that time. You accept that this is me, this is what Im going to do. If its me or you, Ill do it to you before you do it to me. I never knew any better. I had plenty of scares. I used to go from Tulse Hill to Kennington on the 159 bus. And at the time, those buses had no doors on them and you could just jump on them and go upstairs. When I was on the bus, I had to duck down on the top deck so no one would see me when I was going through other areas. Guys would see me sometimes and run on the bus to try and stab me or fight me. I got stabbed a couple of times doing that on the bus. I would have to get off and fight because if these guys cornered me on the bus and there are three of them and its me alone, Im definitely going to get stabbed up. My older brother died and my Mum was saying she didnt want to lose another son. As bad as I was, I never wanted to disappoint my mum. I think my mums only just finding out I was shot twice because when I was shot, I hid away until it was better and never told her. I must have watched John Rambo when I was a kid because I sterilised the wound with alcohol and took the bullet out with pliers and laid low for a couple of weeks. When she came to the prison in Bristol, she said, Son, weve been through so much in life. I looked at my mums face and the tears rolling down her cheeks and I felt bad and I felt ashamed... ...Boxings not an easy game but its a lot easier than what was planned out for me in life...Its still a lot easier than sitting in prison for 20 years or being a drug dealer waiting for the next deal to go down to make a hundred quid. Or just being dead. At least Im here. Its been a struggle to get where I am but I have got the heart of 10 lions and I refuse to give up. I can still inspire people and change their lives. Winning a world title is part of my ambition but the ultimate goal is to inspire people. Let people see that it doesnt matter who ripped you off. Never let people put their doubt and their disbelief on you. Believe in yourself, work hard and dedicate yourself. I want a kid to look at me and say, You know what, this man had no chance in life, but he stayed in there and he worked hard, he dedicated himself and he did it. - Dillian Whyte

06.01.2022 On this day... 'You know what? You're only here once. You only go through life once, and if you don't pick yourself up, you're never going to get up. So just ke...ep trying and never give up and things'll work out for you.' - Chuck Wepner 24th March 1975 - Richfield Coliseum, Ohio Chuck 'The Bayonne Bleeder' Wepner crashes to the canvas moments before his legendary battle for the Heavyweight World Championship challenge against Muhammad Ali is stopped. Ali, who had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Heavyweight boxing history just 7 months prior, when he dethroned the seemingly invincible George Foreman in Zaire, was making his first defence of his newly regained title and was expected to make easy work of Wepner. For Ali, who was the 10-1 bookies' favourite ahead of the bout, everything was going according to the script, seeing him mauling and playing with Wepner for the first 8 rounds. All the while, Wepner kept coming forward, waiting for an opening. As the rounds wore on, the swellings grew until they progressed to cuts around the eyes of Wepner, who drew winces and gasps from the crowd each time he walked into a shot from Ali. Then in the 9th round, the unthinkable happened when a right hook to the ribs sent Ali falling back and onto the canvass. The world gasped in unison as Wepner had managed to do what Foreman couldn't and dropped the Champion. Upon closer scrutiny, the footage shows Wepner unintentionally stepping on Ali's foot which would've contributed to him losing his balance. Nonetheless, it was ruled a knockdown and suddenly Ali was in no mood to play. As the fight resumed, Ali took no chances and comprehensively outboxed his opponent, who despite taking a tremendous amount of punishment, kept coming forward. And forward. And forward. In the final round, an exhausted and bloodied Wepner continued to stalk Ali until his legs began to buckle and his hands dropped lower and lower. Ali fired a lightning quick right hand at the unprotected chin of Wepner, sending the sweat lashing off the challenger's face as he fell back against the ropes and slumped to the floor. Despite absorbing an inhuman amount of shots, Wepner began clambering up the ropes and to his feet but referee, Tony Perez had seen enough and wouldn't allow the beating to continue for a second more. Despite his challenge being an unsuccessful one, Wepner's heroics earned him the respect of the worldwide boxing community as well as providing an aspiring filmmaker with all the elements and motivation he needed for a new script. Sylvester Stallone, who was relatively unknown at the time, had watched the fight and adequately inspired, managed to write a movie script in just 3 days, the script was entitled 'Rocky'. The film was released the following year and went on to become the highest grossing movie of 1976 as well as winning 3 academy awards. Off the back of the movie's success a further 7 movies have followed, creating one of the most iconic film franchises of all time as well as inspiring millions of fans to take up the sport. Even a loss, when handled correctly, can change the world.
