25.01.2022 Working from home on account of Covid19? The ATO have announced an increase in the rate of claim for use of home office from 45c per hour to 80c per hour from 1 March to 30 June. This is almost a doubling of the rate. This is to assist employees and self employed who use their home office during this period. If you need any more information, please feel free to contact me.

24.01.2022 Thank you to all my friends, colleagues and connections for liking my business page. We have reached 300 likes. I never thought I would get past 100. I hope you enjoy the odd post.

24.01.2022 When you click the link below, scroll down to the post written by the President of the Dairy Farmers Federation. Don't believe all the hoopla that self interested people post in social media about this issue. Pauls milks buy all their milk from Queensland dairy farmers. Yes, it is foreign owned but so was Ford and Holden and a myriad of other companies. All the coke and bottled drinks is produced by manufacturing plants in Australia employing Australians, using Australian water and sugar but the company is foreign owned. That is the reality of global investment. Australian's own companies overseas producing food products using local produce in those countries and employing locals.

22.01.2022 Another trend I have noticed in Facebook. Joining groups that promote buying Australian made. Indeed I was just invited to join one that boasted 150,000 members. Maybe a boast. There are 2 significant problems that I see with this sentiment. The first is that we don't manufacture much in the way of consumer goods in Australia except food, wool etc. We do make a lot of stuff but mostly this is for commercial purposes. Long ago we allowed manufacturing to go offshore s...uch as cars, clothing etc. The second is that Australia depends on trade. If we don't trade we become a banana republic. So if we want the world to buy our wool, cotton, food, minerals then we in turn need to buy consumer goods from overseas. Further, much of what we export goes into making products that we in turn import. The global economy and that of Australia cannot grow unless there is free trade. Whilst I understand the sentiment about buying locally made, nevertheless their intent is misguided and not based on understanding of how the world economy works. By all means, if there is an Australian made product when you are looking to purchase, buy it. But don't put a blanket requirement that everything we buy and consume must be made in Australia. Hundreds of thousands of jobs depend on our exports including our farmers who are doing it tough.

21.01.2022 I am gob smacked that the Australian Government can allow this to happen. It has been talked about ad nauseum but they have just sat on their hands with indecision.

21.01.2022 Just watch this everyone. I had a meeting with a client today who runs a business and became a victim of a nasty scam. A hacker got access to their computer and emails and found invoices being sent to clients for payment. So they then emailed 2 of those clients to advise them that their bank account details had changed with an attached amended invoices (doctored of course). The new bank account advised was a CBA account opened in a branch in a Melbourne suburb. The clien...ts of my client then unwittingly paid the invoices to the new bank account and wallah - money gonski. So my clients debtors are refusing to pay the invoices again because they believe that they paid the money and that my client had advised them of a change of bank account. Amount in total is $8,500. My advice to anyone is to tell your clients (and you should make a note of this on your invoice to them) that if they get any advice about a change of bank account details to ring you personally first before any payment is made. My other advice is not to use a home or inhouse servers that can be more easily hacked. I highly recommend a cloud server that has far more security and therefore less likely to be hacked. See more

20.01.2022 Quite an interesting article on China & US diplomacy and how we are viewed.

19.01.2022 WOW - WHAT DO YOU THINK? On the one hand I am delighted that the Covid19 Crisis may see a return of manufacturing in Australia. There are strong arguments for this. Employment, self sufficiency, bringing "making" skills back to Australia. And many more upsides. However, what are the downsides? Higher prices because manufacturers now have to pay Australian wages with the added unionised limitations (I am not passing judgement on this by the way). Smaller population and ...markets for manufactured goods means that our resources will have a smaller market. Reduced exports because why would they import our resources if we don't buy their goods. Etc etc. The other danger is that we may return to the bad old days of high import duties, supporting inefficient industries because they established under extreme circumstances. So lets keep this in perspective especially when you share posts all about "buy Australian only". See more

19.01.2022 This highlights a terrible problem we have in Australia where we have allowed the 3 big supermarkets to decimate the dairy industry by engaging in a pricing war and consequently cutting the payments to the farmers. The farmers in turn have left the industry because they can't produce the milk at the price that the supermarkets demand. And then on top of that the farmers have suffered the drought.

18.01.2022 This is of great interest to me. The debate about lower interest rates for borrowers and the consequence to investment deposit earning rates. So as most of you know, the Reserve Bank has reduced the cash rate to 0.10%. The reason is that the RBA is interested in focusing on stimulating the economy. So how does this effect those who live off the money they have invested in the bank? The first comment I would like to make is that self funded retirees as an example should o...r would have their investments spread across a number of investment classes such as shares, property etc. So they won't be affected to the same effect. I was listening to Steve Austin on ABC this afternoon and whilst he was focusing his segment on self funded retirees (Steve, see my comments about self funded retirees spreading their investment classes) but he is also not considering the necessity of the Government and the RBA to stimulate the economy. If they were to let the economy deepen further into recession/depression, far more people will be severely financially effected. I believe the economic health of the economy is of paramount importance and yes, there will be some who will lose out. Steve Austin, you need to balance the debate so that all options are explored. Don't look at just one group of people who may or may not suffer. See more

18.01.2022 Beware. Read the bit about the ATO employing data matching/benchmarking tools to catch out people who don't disclose all their income. I have been banging on about this for a few years. Every year that goes by we see more sophisticated techniques used by the ATO.

18.01.2022 One of the most important rules about investment is that you never put all your eggs in one basket.

17.01.2022 Mr ScoMo was reported today saying that there was a risk that Australian Businesses are becoming addicted to stimulus funding. I find that a bit rich coming from someone who has never been in business and sitting pretty on a big fat parliamentary salary. It wasn't businesses who initiated the Covid19 lockdown. It wasn't businesses who spread the Covid19 Virus. Business especially small/micro businesses are doing it tough through no fault of their own. We aren't even out of total government enforced restrictions and he is talking about addiction to stimulus funding. We need a government with more empathy than is being shown at the moment. And further to that - he is heading to a total shutdown in trade with China through his insensitive diplomacy. That will destroy the Australian economy good and proper.

17.01.2022 No names mentioned. But this is how ridiculous lending has become (by some lenders - no names mentioned). I have a client who is refinancing their home and investment loans where the bank asked for a letter from their Accountant - ME - to confirm that their business has not been impacted by Covid-19. If they were concerned, you would have thought they would have asked for year to date figures. By the way, it is a consultancy business specialising in environmental science.

17.01.2022 And this is the problem when Politicians generalise about policy especially when it affects unfortunate people like this. To be honest, the way governments and big business deal with people is shameful.

16.01.2022 This is downright scary. What happened when the League of Nations Collapsed? World War 2. What will happen if the United Nations Collapses? World War 3? And see who hasn't paid. You guessed it - USA. So instead of contributing to the UN as a good global citizen, they choose to build a wall on the border of Mexico and Mega Billions on arms. Prior to WW2, USA became isolationist (neglecting it's global responsibilities). And Trump is taking US down the same path. Once down this path they will do nothing until we end up in another war catastrophe like WW2.

16.01.2022 I thought I would share a post I saw. Just so people can see how some in the community are affected by the travel ban within Australia:- FORCED TO MOVE IN A TRAVEL BAN I just want to share the story of people who live on the road at the moment. My husband & I are full-time travellers (since mid-December). Our car & camper trailer are our home. We own nothing else except for a few boxes at a friends place.... There are many people like us on the road. Taken time off work, doing their Big Lap or simply people who travel all around Australia year in & year out. People like us have brought business to & kept small & medium towns alive all over Australia. Not just grey nomads, but backpackers & families with kids. Weve been asked to support rural & regional Australia. To shop, to camp, to visit the local pub & buy a coffee. To visit local attractions. To work on their farms & properties. Then The Corona hit. And now were the enemy. Were going to clog up their hospital systems. We steal their food & drink. And toilet paper . Were going to bring Corona to their town. Councils have sent out police to move us on. When we have nowhere else to go. Ordinary people who are isolating. Lots of space & room. Sitting in their space. Some campgrounds are no longer allowed to take essential travellers (is) without risking a $55,000 fine (Forbes Council). People are driving 1000s of kms under great stress to get to somewhere safe. Theyre being harassed by other people on the road because theyre towing a home. We all have homes but our opportunities to find somewhere to put our home is getting more & more limited. We are all trying bunker down but so many of us are being forced to keep on moving because of new policy. Theyre actually forcing us out onto the road. To keep moving. This is the story of the many full time travellers who have supported rural & regional Australia. My husband & I are staying in a caravan park that is so expensive - beyond what we can afford. Terrified to move because we know well be targeted. But so grateful because it is safe & clean & friendly. And its in a big town so were anonymous. We blend in! All I can say is we will remember who supported OUR COMMUNITY in times of hardship & we will remember you in the future. See more

16.01.2022 Hi all. I am experiencing hack attempts on my server again. However, they have all been blocked so far. There may be delays in assisting clients but hopefully this won't last long. Our excellent IT providers are working on this and doing a thorough check on the system to make sure all is ok and we are upping the security levels at a higher cost to keep us safe. Sorry for any inconvenience.

16.01.2022 This is the climate change debate in a nutshell. Australia is falling behind a lot of the world because we are not taking this issue seriously. We are missing out on so many economic benefits and future proofing our country as a result. Even Malcolm Turnbull can see this.

14.01.2022 Hold the reins on the horse. Yes, the stock market is falling. It's not a disaster. The values haven't tumbled anywhere as low as the GFC. Further, a virus pandemic (not that I believe it has reached that stage yet) is a temporary thing. A vaccine will be found soon. It will run it's course. Just like the Flu (by the way flu viruses generally kill far more people). I believe the market is correcting - temporarily. But the main thing to remember is that panic selling causes losses. You only lose your money if you sell your shares in a declining market. If you hang onto them, one day the market will increase again and you haven't lost any money. If you have any concerns, speak to a Financial Planner or Stock Broker. If you need to talk to one you can PM me and I can send you in the right direction.

14.01.2022 The significant effect of this is on borrowers who may want to refinance post age 55. This will make it harder for anyone over 55 years old to refinance which means they are stuck with the loan and bank that they currently have. Not good news for competition.

14.01.2022 Whether you hate him or whether you love him, I have to say something about this. Barnaby Joyce was publicly berated and ridiculed for his recent public statement about his own personal financial position - linking it to the pathetic levels of the newstart allowance. Whilst he openly said that he wasn't seeking sympathy, nevertheless he was the only politician of the right side of the chamber to have the guts to admit that the newstart allowance is a pathetic amount of mone...y that those who are unfortunate enough to be without a job have to live on. His own financial situation may not be what we consider to be in dire straights worthy of sympathy, nevertheless, it is sad that politicians and the public in general are so quick to berate and ridicule someone who is in fact an allay of those who have to suffer the inadequacies of the newstart allowance. Whether people are on the allowance through their own fault or have no choice is a subject of another debate. See more

13.01.2022 This article is a must read for any business employing staff as contractors. This is a growing trend especially in the construction/IT industries. You must be very careful when taking on staff or indeed with current staff that you review the ATO guidelines about the definition of the relationship with staff (employees vs contractors). It may be enticing to save money by putting staff on as contractors but it can come back to bite you. And it isn't just the ATO catching you out. Many years down the track a staff member who finds that they have been cheated of super can dob you in to the Fair Work Commission and you could find yourself in deep trouble. And in these troubling employment times, this is more likely. Please review your hiring practices to make sure you are compliant. As a first stop - talk to your Accountant.

13.01.2022 This is the first time I have ever agreed with Alan Jones. The LNP have abandoned the farmers - a well known fact. They can find billions to build submarines but they can't find money to drought proof our country and assist a very vital sector of the economy. As a country - we need food.

12.01.2022 Well, isn't this a classic?

10.01.2022 I have seen lots of posts criticising travellers even within Australia. Here is a post I found that puts this into perspective. FROM ANOTHER SITE, WELL WRITTEN BY THIS PERSON Cassy Bailey To anyone who sees caravans and RV's driving through Australia at the moment. Think before you judge or attack them for travelling in the midst of a pandemic. Remember that many people were in the middle of their trip when all if this started. They did not see this coming. And thousands of ...them are grey-nomads who's retirement dreams have turned terrifying. Many of them were far from home when they heard the message not to travel and so stayed where they were. They bunkered down in camping grounds and caravan parks to wait it out. Thinking that staying put was the right thing to do. Recent events have seen thousands of them displaced and left with no choice but to travel. Tasmania ordered all tourists get out of their state by Sunday, 26th of March. And as of the 25th of March, many of our State Governments have ordered the closure of camping grounds and told caravan parks to turn away all but permanent residents. With nowhere to stay, many travellers will be forced to drive through the night or stop to sleep on the side of the road. Please remember that these travellers have been given no choice but to make their way home through affected area and closed borders, not knowing how they will be treated. Most of them are taking every precaution and are aware that they face 2 weeks of isolation upon arriving home. Many are elderly and precisely the most vulnerable in this pandemic. They themselves are at risk every time they need to stop for fuel or food. Many of them are shocked, anxious, tired and scared. And many of them have families who are worried for their safety. 09.01.2022 Financial scams are becoming more sophisticated. If you get a call like this just hang up immediately. Then ring your Accountant and ask them about the status of your tax as they can let you know straight away. Do not under any circumstances give the caller any information, even who your accountant is, as they can trick you into believing you are talking to your accountant. This goes for any phone calls you receive demanding payment. Just hang up and independently ring the purported creditor to check that your account is in order.

09.01.2022 Worth a read. We have been so accustomed to endless travel opportunities that we forget the risks. Of course travel insurance won't cover such events. But we shouldn't stop empathising with those of all countries trapped in other countries whilst travelling. It is despairing for many people to find themselves trapped with no means of support. Travelling on a budget means there is no surplus to cover a month or more of being trapped in a foreign country.

07.01.2022 Let's put this in perspective. In India the citizens have to manually clean out the sewers and latrines and put the waste into baskets to be collected. Don't we live in a lucky country?

07.01.2022 I'm not sharing this because I support Malcolm Turnbull. I am sharing this because this article is well written that could apply to all parties that grace the halls of Federal Parliament. Unfortunately, political parties have succumbed to individuals who put themselves first before the good of the country. Democracy and free speech has suffered and it is often the ones who shout the loudest that get the attention.

06.01.2022 We can never allow Australia to return to a one airline country. That would be disaster for our economy and country.

06.01.2022 What a refreshing attitude to business. And what a fantastic community spirit. Anyone in business should celebrate competition. This business owner knows.

05.01.2022 How true is this?

04.01.2022 Well worth the read. A very basic summary of our economic position and the reforms needed.

03.01.2022 Are you all sitting down? I actually agree with Alan Jones on this issue. Tourism is one of our biggest industries (was) so we cannot allow travel infrastructure (including trained employees) to crumble. The government must keep these services going and that includes keeping Virgin going.

03.01.2022 Fascinating read with heaps of marketing tips. I have been following this unfolding story in marketing. This one is just as fascinating at the Bunnings vs Masters story.

03.01.2022 WARNING - THERE ARE SCAMMERS OUT THERE TO GET THEIR HANDS ON YOUR SUPER. Yes, government gives a hand to Aussies by freeing up super withdrawals for the needy and guess what? - the scammers abound. PLEASE - no one from the ATO or any Superfund will call you to withdraw money. They will be scammers. If you get such a call, simply hang up and then either ring your Financial Planner, Accountant or your Superannuation Fund Manager if you want to take advantage of these new provisions. PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND TO YOUR FRIENDS. If you have questions please feel free to PM me. More than happy to assist.

03.01.2022 This cracks me up every time. So often I see recommendation requests on Facebook business groups pages asking "I need a somebody who can do all these wonderful things and are experts at what they do BUT WHO DON'T CHARGE TOO MUCH". Where on earth are these people who are so happy to work for you for nothing? And of course I am going to recommend the person I use and think is fantastic and worthy of my recommendation so he/she can go to you and get asked to do all this work for the lowest price. And of course these people asking for recommendations are prepared (not) to offer their services at the lowest price.

02.01.2022 This is the problem with privatisation of our very important infrastructure. And this is the problem when competing airlines cut ticket rates to get bums on seats but the privately owned airports won't cut their excessive charges. This issue of excessive charges has being going on for years - ever since privatisation of the airports. Even Qantas has been complaining about it. Maybe the Covid19 times might be the time to rebalance the power of landlords hold over tenants in terms of rental charges.

01.01.2022 Everyone knows I am a tennis nut but listen to this. The world number 1 and his approach to his tennis and career. The final comment is a pearler. Having the right people around you and working hard. And the other theme's such as working on things incrementally to gain small improvements. Don't focus on the end goal too much but greater focus on each step along the way.

01.01.2022 I send clients tax returns for signing by express post to alleviate delays at great cost. What I am finding is that Australia Post is taking 6 days to deliver an express post envelope within Brisbane. Is this a breach of contract? Worst still - a total rip off.
