25.01.2022 Little visitor waiting inside the fly wire screen door at Finbar this morning. (Actually not that little - it's body was about 9 cms long with a wingspan of about 12 cms.) Some sort of dragonfly??

24.01.2022 COMMUNITY COMPOSTORS! Great news. We now have a NEW special FINBAR SIDE GATE ENTRANCE into the area in the school where we are keeping our aero bins and compost bins. (This is a joint project with Yarra Primary). This way you don't have to go via the school gate entrance when you are emptying your own bucket of food scraps. Please note access to the school area is limited to out of school hours.

23.01.2022 Our local Centrelink office is staying put until at least March next year. This is thanks to the wonderful response from the community to support Adam Bandt's petition to the Federal Government to keep the office here in Abbotsford.

22.01.2022 We've installed six new Aero Bins at Finbar! (Well next door to be exact.) Currently we are not providing the bucket service but you can still empty your own bucket of scraps directly into our six new aero bins - located right next door to us on the grounds of Yarra Primary. This can be done outside school hours - eg weekends, before and after school. Remember - no bread, meat or plastic bags etc.

21.01.2022 Our Art students here at Finbar are still managing to create art while in lockdown. Finbar's resident Art Tutor, Damian, has been tutoring via WhatsApp. He's been doing lots of water colours lately and is planning to use his latest piece of artwork (pictured here) for their next WhatsApp project.

21.01.2022 Finbar staff and other concerned community members met with Adam Bandt today to discuss the sudden closure of our Centrelink office in Abbotsford (Victoria St Richmond) The Federal Government is closing this vital service as at 4.30 pm today!! Adam Bandt has started a petition calling on the government to immediately reinstate a physical service for those in need. Can you add your voice to the campaign? 13.01.2022 FINBAR'S OUTDOOR LIBRARY has been growing and growing. It has become so popular we've installed more shelving - making it easier to find the book you want. Our library is open all hours for people looking for something to read or somewhere to drop off books for others to read. It's located outside on our front veranda.

13.01.2022 Knitting for the Lost Dogs Home. This is an activity that is keeping some of our house bound members busy during lock down. If you like knitting - join in. Drop off or send the finished jumpers into Finbar and we will arrange a drop off to the Lost Dogs Home.

11.01.2022 Our compost depot will be CLOSING DOWN for the holidays -(staff need holidays too!!!!) beginning Friday 18th December and re-opening on Monday 1st February. Thank you to the community for your terrific efforts to contribute to a more sustainable world. We look forward to working with you in 2021 when exciting things will be happening. ... Community composting and food growing - Working workshops to be announced early next year. Get in touch if you'd like to get involved and get your hands dirty.

11.01.2022 To all our lovely compostors. We love that you care enough to separate your organic food scraps and deposit them into our aero compost bins - however - please please please - DO NOT put plastic bags - including bio-degradable/compostable bags - into our compost aero bins.

11.01.2022 Thank you to our wonderful volunteer, Laura, who has cut out lots and lots of patterns for all our other lovely volunteers who are busy sewing PPE/medical scrubs at home. Here's Laura in the process of making what looks to be a pretty lovely looking 'scrub'. The purchase of some absolutely gorgeous material is due to the generous donations of members of our community.

10.01.2022 Some pics of a very fun evening for members of Finbar. Our first 'Live Music and Dinner Evening'. Great to see so many members enjoying themselves - meeting new friends, chatting, eating and dancing. The highlight of the evening was when Margie Bayes (a much loved member at Finbar and a recording/singing star from the the 60's) was encouraged to get up and sing for us. With no rehearsal she sang like the pro she had always been - to the delight of everyone in the audienc...e. Many thanks to the terrific band - Lindsay Boyd, Bruce Callander, Alf Giarusso and Grant Guppy who donated their time and talent to give us such great music.

As part of biodiversity month Yarra Riverkeeper Ass...ociation will be running a bioblitz throughout September to get a better snapshot of the plants , wildlife and little critters in #Yarra. If you want to get involved, all you’ll need to do is download the iNaturalist app onto your phone and then take some photos of the nature that surrounds you.
