25.01.2022 Young workers are some of the most vulnerable out there, because they simply don't know what they don't know. It's our job as parents to help them get ready for the workplace and that includes giving them some basic information about health and safety and their rights. Want to know more? Get in touch and let's talk about how to start the conversation. #finditfixitownit #safetymusings #weareallinthistogether #humantohuman

25.01.2022 PLANNING AND ORGANISING Organising and planning helps you get your work done accurately can make you more efficient, productive and avoid costly mistakes. If you don't know where you're going, how you're going to get there or WHY you're doing it, you probably won't hit the target. ... These skills are critical to personal and professional success. We only have a certain amount of time every day/week/month/year to achieve those KPI's, targets and objectives. If we don't plan our actions and activities, those deadlines will easily pass us by. I often take a leaf from the wildly successful 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and the late, great Steven Covey who said - Begin with the end in mind. What is the AS IS or current state? What is the TO BE state ? Where are we trying to get to? What do we need to do to get from AS IS to TO BE? Think about resources - people, money, time, facilities, equipment and base the plan on that. I caution you to be realistic in your planning. It can be tempting to say you can finish something ahead of time, but if there are steps missed or you don't meet the deadline, people will remember that and not that you achieved the desired outcomes. Planning your work can also help to minimise risk to yourself and others when completing the project or task. Get the plan right, talk about it with the key players and then execute it on time and in full. #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #planningislife #organiseyourplan

23.01.2022 He turned 18 only days ago...and the other man remains in critical condition. There is no judgement here for it will take time for the investigation to be completed. Only heartache for the families and friends of those injured and lost today. Thoughts and prayers aren't enough. Action needs to be taken, but the right kind - the kind where we include employers, parents and young workers/apprentices in open and honest discussions about workplace risk. Who's with me?... #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #tooyoung #gonetoosoon https://www.news.com.au///96ff01fa848ea5c029bfe61450721307

23.01.2022 You've been patient with me as I work through this time in my life, but it's time to get back to "normal" and start sharing some insights from what I've learned in my years of working in health and safety, and more importantly, of my years of being a decent human being. I wanted to talk a bit about why I think it's important for parents to be aware of workplace health and safety standards where their kids are working. I've talked before how we spend so much time helping them... get the job, then we send them off to have strangers and peers determine what "good" looks like when it comes to their wellbeing. I'm not suggesting that we learn their health and safety rules line by line, but it would be of value to ask open ended questions about how it's going, what they're doing and if they feel supported at work (like have they gotten enough training to feel like they know what's going on and what they're supposed to be doing). if the answers worry you, then dig a bit deeper. Health and safety inductions are cookie cutter for the most part and talk high level about who is responsible for what, what you should do if you get hurt and are very generalised. There may or may not be another level of training for higher risk activities, but again, they are usually delivered in a certain way - and what if your kid, like so many out there - don't learn the way they teach? Think about it for a moment, new job, possibly first job, doesn't want to look out of place, so even if the training doesn't make sense, they aren't likely to speak up. If they didn't understand the training and they don't speak up, the likelihood of them doing it wrong and/or hurting themselves increases. I hear you saying, we learn from our mistakes, and I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately their learning may come in the form of an injury to themselves or someone else. #starttheconversation #finditfixitownit #weareallinthistogether #humantohuman #safetymusings Photo by ELEVATE from Pexels

22.01.2022 TEAMWORK What is it and why does it matter so much in the workplace? On a very basic level, it's the ability to work alongside a lot of different people with the aim of working towards a common and shared goal. ... No one is ever going to agree with every single person and what they say at work or in life, but the key is finding ways to be able to look beyond the differences and figure out how you're going to kick some goals together. It's not always easy, but something that has helped me over the years has been to work out where everyone is coming from and then how to meet their needs while still achieving the goal. This is not always possible, but once you understand the objections or concerns, you will be able to provide responses and keep moving forward. Why is it so important? Teamwork helps solve problems. Brainstorming is a great way for the team to share ideas and come up with creative ways of doing things. Some of the best and most innovative ideas come from brainstorming activities with a small group of dedicated people. Teamwork and safety go hand in hand - have a read of Canadian safety expert @Kev Burns' blog post here: http://www.kevburns.com//5-way-to-improve-teamwork-in-safe He summarises 5 ways to improve teamwork in safety as follows: 1. Focus on people improvement 2. Compliment more than criticise 3. Inspect, don't expect 4. Advocate for your crew 5. Give the team the credit #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #teamwork #makesthedreamwork

20.01.2022 Work experience can often be your child's first experience in the workplace. How do you know if they're getting the most out of the experience? Here are some questions you can get your kids to ask when figuring out where to do their work experience: What will I be learning and doing when I'm there?... How will the work that I'm doing benefit your organisation? What will I be able to take out into my first job? Why does your company offer work experience? How do you benefit from the experience? I've seen some companies bring students in to do their filing and I've seen companies bring students in and deliver a mini project and everything in between. This is a great chance for your kids to see what "work" is like. Why not let them have the best experience possible? How do you want them to feel when they leave their work experience? Excited about the next stages of life or demoralised because the experience has been less than stellar? Help them identify their interests and then find the best fit for them to see if they actually like the industry, or just the perceived idea of it. #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #finditfixitownit #safetymusings

16.01.2022 Well hello there! It's a beautiful chilly night and I'm home and safe and warm. I was out earlier at my local supermarket and I couldn't help but think of all the kids that have started their first jobs in that exact place. What an honour for those companies to be able to introduce our kids to their first jobs, and all that comes with it! What's that saying? With great power comes great responsibility. ... Some organisations rise to the challenge and provide the support, training and mentoring that young people need entering the workforce. Some assume that our kids should know what they're doing and give them the run of the mill induction that everyone gets and there are those that are somewhere in between. We need to teach our kids what their rights are at work. We need to teach them it's ok to speak up and say that's unsafe. We need to teach them to ask questions if they don't understand something, without fear of repercussion or humiliation. No one knows it all coming into a new job. Part of the fun is the learning. Let's help our kids have the best first work experience ever. If you get the chance in your workplace, remember, this young person belongs to someone, as we all do. Help them to learn and grow into their roles. Help them to figure out how to navigate the workplace through positive experiences. They may not thank you now, but they will remember the first job they had. Help them to look back fondly. #finditfixitownit #safetymusings #weareallinthistogether #humantohuman

15.01.2022 I've wanted to post so many times over the past few weeks. I'd get notifications saying someone has looked at your page and I'd think, I must get back to it and post something. Always trying to be of value, I don't want to just "post" anything - but I couldn't bring myself to do it. You see, mid November, I got news that my mum in Canada had been diagnosed with her 4th type of cancer - brain cancer and it threw my world out of whack. On 15th December I headed over to sp...end time with mum and on 28th of December, she passed away. I came back to Australia on January 10th and my re-entry into this new normal has been bumpy to say the least. Starting next week there will be more regular posts, sharing of templates, tricks and tools I've used along my career in safety and what I've learned from life so far, that have helped others, and hopefully they will help you too - whether that's to have a conversation or to introduce a new process. I'm working on some new things and will be relying on this community to let me know if I'm on the right track. Thanks for your patience. We are all only ever doing our best. #finditfixitownit #safetymusings #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether

15.01.2022 There is a lot of talk that young workers are amongst the most vulnerable and therefore need more training and supervision. While I don't disagree, what I struggle to understand is why the training and information doesn't change to suit their needs in a lot of cases? It's still the same information presented in the same way it is for all other workers. I'm not saying that it needs to be radically different, but then again maybe it does. At the very least, it needs to resona...te with them, and as engaging as we can make online learning, it just might not be enough for someone starting out in the workforce. Call me old fashioned, but I still think the best on boarding is done face to face - human to human. As for the extra supervision, while it's good in theory, I don't think that a lot of organisations are able to provide what is needed in this area. It's not a lack of want, but perhaps a lack of resourcing to be able to achieve it. So what's the answer? Let them learn about risks and risk taking before they start work. Talk to them about risks you see at work and how they should be discussed and handled. Photo by Bagus Pangestu from Pexels #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #safetymusings

14.01.2022 *** the photo in this post isn't me**** ;) It's May tomorrow and I realise looking back on my posts on this page that I haven't always been as consistent as I would like to be. I haven't posted when I've said I'm going to and I'm sorry about that. Life gets busy, or so I tell myself and I haven't planned out the posts in advance, so then I'm scrambling to get them written. Then I worry sometimes that I'm going away from the messaging and the essence of the business. Trut...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Here's a video that was put out in about 2015 by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland regarding young worker safety and the importance of effective AND supportive supervision when starting out. 10.01.2022 Those of you that have kids about to start their first job, or have recently started.... Would your kids be interested in a day or half day to get to know about the basics of safety and get to speak to those who employ young people? Im not talking job fair, Im talking Q & A and expectations from both sides and an opportunity to get the nerves out before they start applying for jobs. ... What do you think ?

09.01.2022 Mother's Day is bittersweet for some - there are those that have lost their children too soon to workplace incidents. Which is why it's so important we get the conversations started between employers, parents and young workers. Let's be clear in our communication and our expectations. Let's not assume that just because people don't ask for clarification that they know what they're doing. Let's be there to help each other settle in to work and understanding what those ri...sks are. Let's work together to make sure that kids get home from work safely so mums don't feel the extra weight of their loss on this day.

09.01.2022 If you could go back and share one bit of wisdom with yourself before your first day of work, what would that be ? Mine is Ask all the questions you can and dont feel like you need to have it all figured out. No one comes into work knowing what to expect or what to do, not really. 09.01.2022 It has to be said, the people working in supermarkets are just that : PEOPLE. They are someone's mum, dad, daughter, son, grandchild. What if it was YOUR family that was being abused in the supermarket, just because that is where they work and happen to be in the firing line? Would your attitude change? Would you show more compassion? Yes it's frustrating, but yelling and berating another person is never ok. We all belong to someone. ... Let's stop a moment, take a breath, calm down and put it into perspective. This situation has caused all kinds of emotions to come out, but right now, we are not showing the best of who we are - at all. Fist fights over toilet paper? Grabbing things out of others hands? How did we go from EVERYONE stepping up during and after the bushfires to THIS? Your kids are watching how you behave through this. Show them grace under pressure instead of snapping. Think about the psychological impact to some of the workers experiencing your wrath and fury. Don't be a bully - and I don't use that word lightly. #finditifixitownit #weareallinthistogether #safetymusings #humantohuman

09.01.2022 What are we doing to equip our kids for their working life? Some say it's not up to us. I don't agree. We prep them for life which helps us prep them for work, including conflict resolution, resilience and just being a decent human with manners. ... It's not the school's job to do that, and it's not the workplace's place to do it. These skills start at home. Many articles and safety programs will say "young workers need more training and more supervision because of their inexperience", yet we put them through the exact same training as all other staff and just expect them to "get it". The workplace is not the school yard, nor is it home. The rules are different and the stakes can be higher if mistakes are made. 06.01.2022 SELF MANAGEMENT What is self management and why is it important in the workplace? Examples of self management skills include the following:... *self-confidence; *persistence; *resilience; *patience; *perceptiveness and *emotional regulation What if you got mad every time someone disagreed with you at work? How would that be perceived by your peers or your manager? It's important to keep trying even if something doesn't work on the first go. There are no trophies for making one attempt and then giving up because it's too hard. Keep going and learn from every "failed" attempt because there is always something to learn from the effort. Keeping your cool when someone says something that makes you angry or upset is critical at work and in life, really. Remember they are coming from a place of their understanding that probably has nothing to do with you. What does self management have to do with health and safety? Staying calm when facing risk might help you come up with a better solution than if you panic. Being perceptive and having your wits about you might assist you to identify hazards before they find you! #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #resilience #patience #perceptiveness

06.01.2022 As with most kids, my son oscillates between wanting to be about a million different things when he grows up. One of the things that he's got on his list is a builder or something in construction. I read articles like this and think "Hazing can happen in any industry, unfortunately. What do we need to do to stop this from happening? Can we stop it from happening or is that wishful thinking?" What is so appealing about hurting or scaring another human being? What was goi...ng through his mind when he did this? Does he feel remorse? Will he do it again? Is the fine enough? https://www.abc.net.au//supervisor-fined-for-sett/11456004 We've all got young people in our lives, in some way. Is this how we want them to be treated when they start their working life or their career? If you want to teach your kids anything about workplace safety, teach them this: Stand up for the little guy, for the one that gets picked on and bullied. Stand with him or her. There's strength in numbers. Don't be afraid to speak up when something isn't right - you may be the only one that does. #finditfixitownit #safetymusings #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether

06.01.2022 How can I help ? Four simple words that can mean everything to someone when theyre struggling - whether it be at work, at home or somewhere in between. How does this relate to new, young and vulnerable workers ? They often are too afraid to ask for help for fear of looking stupid. How can you help? Read the room and their body language. If they look uncomfortable or unsure, they probably are. 06.01.2022 After a three day break, we are back with... INITIATIVE AND ENTERPRISE What does that mean? Simply put it means identifying things that need to be done and doing them without being asked. ... How happy does it make us when our kids clean their rooms without being asked? If they see something else around the house or garden and just do it instead of telling us it needs to be done! Besides allowing us to pat ourselves on the back for our awesome parenting skills ;), it's also an important skill to to have in the workplace. When you see something that needs to be done and you just get on with it and do it, it shows the employer that even though it may not be in your "job description", you are trying to help the greater group. Bosses and managers notice things like this and when it comes time to promotions or added responsibilities, they will look favourably upon it. What does it mean to be enterprising? It means good at thinking of and doing new and difficult things; of seeing the opportunity in every situation instead of the issues. Seeing the issues and then seeing ways to make them better is a critical skill needed in the workplace today. You may come across a risk and see what needs to be done to address it when everyone else has gotten used to it and/or walked by, not seeing it as a risk. Keep your eyes and mind open and you'll be amazed at the possible opportunities you may see. We can all do with being a bit more enterprising and taking the initiative in work and in life, true? #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #weareallinthistogether #humantohuman #taketheinitiative #saysomething #beproactive

04.01.2022 Starting work is one of the many rites of passage for our kids. Whether they get their first job at 15 or 18 or 20, they are still going to experience a difference from their interactions within the school yard and amongst their peers. How can we help to better prepare them? The last set of posts I wrote had to do with 8 key employability (soft) skills that are critical to success in today's workplace. The last one, the ninth that I added, was health and safety.... I know you must be thinking - health and safety is up to the employers - what could I teach my kids about that before they start work? The good news is that you probably have been all along without even knowing it. Teaching them about risk when learning to walk, crossing the street, mowing the lawn, helping to prepare dinner - without even realising it, we've been teaching them about risk and risk controls our whole lives -so let's keep it going as we prepare them for work. Most young kids start out in one of the following areas: Construction Retail Hospitality Manufacturing Logistics Let's explore over the next few days how you've already been getting your kids ready for safety at work... Tomorrow we start with Construction :)

03.01.2022 Phew made it before the end of the day ;) PROBLEM SOLVING We do it every day, but somehow it can become more complicated and cumbersome at work. ... Problem solving can be as simple as, the train isn't running so I'll take the bus to work or as difficult as we aren't going to make the sales target for the quarter - what can we do - and everything in between. Problem solving is finding solutions to issues that present themselves to us in life and at work. What are the main steps to problem solving? 1. Identify the problem or the issue 2. Think of all the ways you might be able to solve it 3. Pick the best one 4. Try it out! 5. Regroup and discuss if it's working If it's not working, no big deal, just head back to the drawing board and try something else. Why is it so important to be able to solve problems at work? Employers like to see good problem solving skills because it also helps to show them you have a range of other competencies such as logic, creativity, resilience, imagination, lateral thinking and determination. How does it apply to health and safety? Problem solving is essentially good risk management. 1. Identify the hazard 2. Assess the risk 3. Think of all the ways to solve it 4. Pick the best one 5. Try it out 6. Regroup and review how successful it is #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #problemsolving #lifeskills

02.01.2022 No one should lose their child to a workplace incident. Shout out to all the mums out there that are feeling that loss more deeply today. Help us to make the changes we need to see in the workplace to stop this kind of tragedy from happening.

02.01.2022 TECHNOLOGY Technology has helped the workplace to advance in ways we probably couldn't have predicted, but it's also become a way to hide behind having face to face interactions. For me, having skills around technology includes being able to use the programs like word, excel as well as possibly social media channels for marketing. ... Technology also has applications with cash registers and EFTPOS machines as well which, if you're working in retail or hospitality, are going to be critical tools to succeed. Being able to use the technology speaks to our ability to learn new things and be able to adapt to changing work environments. Even if health and safety, technology has some great applications - from being able to report incidents while in the field, to being able to video a hazard and send it back to head office. While technology is important, it can't replace the need to have those face to face conversations where you can "read" body language and tone. Emails and SMS can be misinterpreted. Find the balance between technology and human interactions at work and you'll be laughing. #safetymusings #finditfixitownit #humantohuman #weareallinthistogether #technology

02.01.2022 We spend a lot of time as parents and carers getting our kids "work ready". By that I mean helping them to get their resume right, prepping them for interviews and making sure they look presentable for their interviews. Once they get the job, most of us don't really think about what comes next. We make an assumption that their employers are going to look after them, they will have a buddy to "show them the ropes" and that they will be safe. I'm not saying that employers do...n't have a duty of care and shouldn't be providing training and information, but no one is going to love them and care about them in the same way we do, so why not give them the best start? teach them to say no to unsafe work. Teach them how to navigate the politics. Teach them all the things you weren't taught before you started your first job. Teach them what you've learned since. You are a fountain of knowledge - don't sell yourselves short. #finditfixitownit #safetymusings #weareallinthistogether #humantohuman

01.01.2022 Summer is coming here in Australia and for many kids, so is that rite of passage called a first job.
