19.01.2022 Memories. St Martin's, Little Waltham, Essex, England. My 4x great grandfather Benjamin Ketley was baptised here in April 1784 (and a couple of his older brothers in the 1770s), and then married here in 1806. All 12 of his children were baptised here between 1807-1828. Most of my 3x great grandfather William Ketley's 9 children were also baptised here between 1845-1863. My 2x great grandfather William Ketley left England in the early/mid 1860s to fight in the NZ Maori War, b...efore settling in Australia, and marrying in NSW in 1876, however... a couple of his sister's children were also baptised at Little Waltham between 1860-1880. It was nice to join a Sunday Service when I was there in 2017 and to remember their 100+ year association over 240 years earlier. See more
18.01.2022 On 3 October 1809 Barbara BRAND was born at Kincardine in Tulliallan Parish, (then part of Perthshire - now Fife), Scotland to David BRAND [DB#1] and Janet FOTHERINGHAM. Barbara married Andrew INNES on 10 March 1839 at Kincardine (Tulliallan Parish), which is just as well because they had a daughter in 1833. Barbara and Andrew (also born in Tulliallan) lived most of their lives in Kincardine; only moving in with their daughter’s family in later life. Barbara died in 1886 and was buried at the old Woodlea Kirk Cemetery in Kincardine. I took delight in finding and cleaning their headstone when I was there in 2017. Barbara was my 4th great grand aunt - a younger sister of my 4th great grandfather [DB#2]. Happy 211th Birthday Barbara.

11.01.2022 On 27 April 1847 my 2x great grandmother Emma CHEESEMAN was born at Balmain, NSW to John CHEESEMAN and Martha CROFT. Emma married William KETLEY on 11 July 1876 at Waterloo, NSW. In Nana’s Memoirs she wrote [of her Mother’s wedding]: Mum said it was the Thursday night before Good Friday and that it was a beautiful night and she always remembered riding with Dad in the hansom cab in the beautiful light of the full moon. By 1890 they had 6 children; the 2 youngest died in Dec...ember 1894 and January 1895, one of diphtheria and one of typhoid [so Nana said]. Nana’s Memoirs: She was a small woman, slim and neat, about 5ft or 5ft 1 inch high. Grandma always dressed very neatly and wore a bonnet tied with ribbons. She could mix and talk with everyone and they all loved her. When she was 25 years old, she married my Grandfather and when her first child was a baby she went to live at Ryde at the orchard my Grandfather had there. Grandma hated the life on the orchard. She was very much a person who loved life and people and I suppose the loneliness and hard work on the orchard was something she did not like, and in those days Ryde was very isolated and there would have been no conveniences at all there. She told me that the first day she went there to live she walked from the station (which must have been West Ryde as that would have been the nearest) and carried the baby Florence, and if she had a baby she must have had a bag with necessities for the child and when she was nearly there she sat down on the side of the road and cried. Poor tired Gran. When she left there she said, I hope I never see this God-forsaken place again. After William died in 1914 Emma lived with different family members until she went to Balmain to look after her ill sister. When Caroline died, Emma married Caroline’s husband, John Geary, in 1933. Emma was 86 and John was 91. Nana said Gran said it did not look nice living in the same house. Emma died on 28 April 1939. I suppose she was determined to hang on for her 92nd birthday [even though cemetery records list 91 years]. Images: Emma 1865, 1880s, 1907, 1934. Marriage Certificate [not sister Sarah married at the same time].
10.01.2022 Ancestry plans to improve the quality of DNA matches by removing most matches where less than 8cM is shared. Peter from LostCousins estimates that for most people this will mean losing between one-third and one-half of all their matches. The change will take effect at some point during August. 08.01.2022 On 2 November 1917 Janet Hair CRAWFORD died at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She was born at Greenock about 1855, the youngest daughter of Alexander CRAWFORD and Janet WORKMAN. [See www.facebook.com/libbywilliams59/posts/10158627713659723 for more about Alexander]. She was the first wife [aka the wanton woman] of David Jolly BRAND. After DB#4 divorced her in 1881 she went back to Greenock and married Hugh McINTEE on 22 January 1885. She had 2 more children with Hugh. Image: Greenock sign.
08.01.2022 Bored? Have nothing to do this weekend? Go and take some photos at your local cemetery. Cemeteries are one of the most important resources for genealogists, and once they crumble, they and their history are lost forever.

07.01.2022 On 29 April, we remember Euphemia MEIKLEJOHN (wife of James GRAY) who died in 1841 at Kincardine, Fife (then Perthshire), Scotland, aged 62 years. Unfortunately, I know very little about Euphemia and I think it was rather inconsiderate of her to die just before the 1841 Census. In 2017 I had the pleasure of cleaning her headstone.

06.01.2022 On 17 October 1883 my great grandmother Rose Hilda KETLEY was born in a little stone cottage, situated where the Ryde Golf Course is now, to William KETLEY and Emma CHEESEMAN. My Nana [her daughter] said ‘Grandfather had an orchard there and said all the children used to sit under the fruit trees and eat fruit and she [Rose] always said her lovely skin and complexion was due to this.’ Rose married William Albert BRADLEY on 27 April 1905 - the Thursday night before Easter they had 4 children. When my mother was a toddler, Rose would say to her ‘How’s my little puddin’ and pie?’ So, instead of being called Grandmother she was called Pie. And of course, her husband Bert was called as Daddy Pie. Pie died on 30 November 1968. The only great grandparent I knew. Happy 137th Birthday Pie.

01.01.2022 14 May 1852 is believed to have been the birthday of David Jolly Brand, born at Alva, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to David Brand and Janet Christie. At the age of 16 David stowed away with 6 other boys on the "Arran" from Greenock. Every Scots' boy 'God given right'. They were maltreated and put off on to the ice-flows,where they then walked, some bare-footed, until they were picked up by boat. Some worked on farms for several months until another boat bound for Greenock took th...em home.Their ordeal lasted about 6 months. When the "Arran" returned to Greenock, the captain & firstmate went to trial in Edinburgh for the crime. I'm very glad my great great grandfather survived; otherwise I wouldn't be writing this now.
