25.01.2022 THIS ONE IS FOR MY FELLOW MUMMA'S To my fellow Mums, never underestimate yourselves and what you do day in and day out. So much goes unseen but I see you. I know how much you care and sacrifice daily. You are amazing. Amongst the chaos though, is the need for you to prioritise some down time every now and then. It's not being selfish or a bad Mum to want some down time. You simply cannot pour from an empty cup.... Constant busyness is your body in a chronic state of fight or flight (stress) and it can start to wreak havoc on your health. And the mental load of parenting can be utterly exhausting at times. It can help to schedule in periods of down time to focus on doing things YOU love to do.

22.01.2022 COMPLETE MICROBIOME MAPPING A snapshot of the functional pathology testing available to clients who are wanting to get to the 'bottom' of their digestive issues (excuse the pun! ). This type of testing takes out the guess work of what may be contributing to anything from poor gut health, IBS, skin issues, food intolerances, hormonal imbalances and mood disorders. This allows for a specific and tailored treatment approach.... This comprehensive stool test assesses a myriad of GIT functional markers including the integrity of your gut lining (potential leaky gut), levels of beneficial and harmful bacteria overgrowth , parasites, and fungi and yeast overgrowths. All of which can contribute significantly to poor gut health, and chronic health conditions including autoimmune disease. 18.01.2022 WHY IS MY CHILD NOT SLEEPING? Ain't that the question most sleep deprived parents want an answer too! And if it were an easy answer, the world would most definitely be a better place with less sleep deprived kids and parents! Despite the challenges parents face in dealing with a sleepless child (this post is referring to toddlers up until teenage years), there can be some common culprits disrupting a child's sleep.... Some of these include: Diet ~ highly processed, sugar laden, nutrient void diets can wreak havoc on a child's circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle) by not providing the nutrients the body requires to regulate sleep. Limited Vit D exposure: daily time outdoors has been shown to improve sleep quality due to the regulation of sleep promoting hormones including melatonin. Screen time: too much TV, ipad, phone, computer exposure especially at night emit blue rays that suppress the secretion of melatonin. Caffeine containing foods and drinks keep the body alert by interfering with receptors in the brain (adenosine receptors) that normally signal sleep when they reach a certain threshold. Blood sugar dysregulation due to a lack of sufficient protein and healthy fats in diet that stabilise blood sugar. Low blood sugar at night can release cortisol and wake kids up when they should otherwise be sleeping. Too high sugar levels can also be a problem due to extra burden on the kidneys and hence more trips needed to the bathroom. Nightmares, fears, anxiety can all play a role in sleep disturbances, kids feeling wired and tired and not able to process emotions experienced during the day. Food intolerances, undiagnosed allergies, eczema and asthma can also keep children awake at night if unmanaged. Undiagnosed infections, pinworm infection (this is a big culprit of disturbed sleep in kids and can go undiscovered for long periods of time). This is not an exhaustive list as there can be other factors that contribute to a child's sleep quality. If you want some help to investigate what could be going on, get in touch with me!

18.01.2022 Do you often feel bloated soon after eating? Are you eating quickly, on the run or whilst you're working? Are you sitting down to eat in a relaxed state? Are you always the first person to finish your meal? Do you get reflux/indigestion after eating a meal?... If you are answering yes to a lot of these questions, the chances are you are eating in a stressed state and not allowing optimal digestion to take place -and more than likely, not chewing for long enough to allow better breakdown of your food. I will talk more about mindful eating in future posts, however today is all about the importance of CHEWING your food properly. The simple act of chewing your food PROPERLY can alleviate some of the aforementioned symptoms and here is why.... In relation to optimal digestion, chewing plays a critical role in setting up the digestive processes further along the line. Your teeth and tongue are designed to grind and manipulate food down into smaller pieces and your salivary glands secrete enzymes to aid absorption of nutrients. The benefits of chewing your food are widespread and include: - Increased absorption of nutrients in your food -reduced risk of digestive disturbances such as bloating, reflux, bacterial overgrowths and dysbiosis, leaky gut - better weight management by increasing feelings of satiety (studies have shown participants who ate slower and chewed food up to 30 times, ate less overall calories than those who didn't) So, just how do you chew your food properly? * Before you start eating, make sure to take a few deep breaths, think about your food and sit down in a relaxed state. The simple act of smelling your food, signals our vagus nerve to start secreting salivary enzymes. * Ensure you chew your food until it is liquified and a pul-like consistency before swallowing. For some food types, this might mean you are chewing up to 30 times per bite. * Take your time eating your meals, this will assist feelings of fullness so you don't overeat and allow your digestive enzymes to do their job properly to avoid undigested food progressing through the digestive tract causing inflammation. As always, making changes to your lifestyle can take some time and persistence but don't give up. By chewing your food properly, you are doing your digestive tract a great service and can start to feel more energised as your body is able to absorb nutrients more efficiently. Not to mention, this simple act can help reduce many unwanted digestive symptoms! If you are wanting to investigate your digestive symptoms in more depth, I would love to help you out. Online consults are currently available. Head to the book now button and let's get you started.

17.01.2022 CAN'T SLEEP? You're not alone here. Many of us experience sleep disorders, insomnia and poor quality sleep on a regular basis. In my previous post I talked about the health benefits of sleep and why it is so important for our health, both physically and emotionally.... So today let's talk about some of the things that can contribute to poor quality sleep. The bad news is there are a lot of factors that can negatively impact our sleep such as: Stimulants such as caffeine that bind to adenosine receptors and block the signal to the brain it is time to sleep (known as process s) Poor diet, nutrient deficiencies and blood sugar dysregulation that negatively impact the sleep-wake cycle Emotional factors such as anxiety, depression and high cortisol levels from chronic stress Lack of sun exposure impacting on melatonin levels (sleep promoting hormone) Late night exposure to technology with blue light that suppresses the production of melatonin Digestive issues such as reflux, indigestion, poor diet Alcohol intake affects the quality of NREM sleep which is your deep quality restorative sleep and depletes other essential nutrients Late night exercise or external stress that raises cortisol levels Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy etc. The good news is a lot of these factors relate to diet and lifestyle and can therefore be reversed with some simple lifestyle and dietary changes! I love to help clients on their journey to better quality sleep. First it's about identifying what could be contributing and then using all the amazing tools naturopathic medicine can offer as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Get in touch if you are one of those people who are 'tired' of poor sleep (love a good pun)! Online consults available xx

17.01.2022 SO..... WHY SEE A NATUROPATH? Great question! so glad you asked ....... First and foremost, there are actually many reasons but for the sake of time, I will narrow them down to a few of my faves! 1. You may be experiencing a chronic health issue which you just haven't been able to overcome and are looking to explore other avenues of treatment. IBS, poor gut health, PMS, endometriosis, PCOS, anxiety, low moods, eczema, acne, sleep issues are just some of the health conditions ...that can be greatly impacted by diet, stress, lifestyle factors and more. Naturopathy can be a great option to improve the state of your health. 2. You may want to explore underlying causes contributing to your health instead of just treating your symptoms. Naturopathy throughly investigates your diet, factors such as stress and sleep, and can utilise further pathology testing to uncover more answers. 3. You may be interested in investigating your diet and finding out how to best nourish and fuel your body with the right types of food and nutrition. Certain foods can trigger inflammation in individuals and worsen certain health conditions and these can be identified with further testing. 4. You may want to know more about how your lifestyle, diet and stress can contribute to your current state of health and find solutions to feel better. 5. You may want to explore herbal and nutritional medicine as an adjunct or sole therapy for your health condition. Herbal and nutritional medicine has the awesome ability to be tailored to the individual as there is never a one-size fits all solution. Everyone is different, therefore every treatment plan will be different. Still not convinced naturopathy is the way to go? That's ok! Why not book a free 15 minute enquiry call to chat with me to see how naturopathy and nutrition can help you. To book an appointment or an enquiry call click the BOOK NOW button or head to www.finefeathernaturopathy.com.au Don't forget that all bookings are 20% off until the end of December!

15.01.2022 STRESS & DIGESTION A little while back I posted about different stress triggers that all have the same physiological changes in our body, as the body adapts to a 'flight or fight' mode in response to that stress. Today's post focuses on some (yep.. there are more!) effects stress has on digestion and believe me, the impact stress has on your digestive capacity is enormous. ... Firstly, when you are stressed or eating on the run, you probably aren't even thinking about your food, let alone chewing enough. Theoretically, you should be chewing your food into an easily digested pulp! This equates to about 30 chews each mouthful, give or take a few! The mere fact of thinking about your food before you eat it, stimulates something called the vagus nerve which then triggers a response to your digestive system to start secreting digestive enzymes to help break down your food. When you eat stressed, your stomach may not be producing enough hydrochloric acid to break down your food properly, resulting in undigested food passing through to the intestines where they can wreak havoc and cause fermentation leading to IBS symptoms, excessive bloating and gas and conditions like SIBO and dysbiosis. Stomach acid is also another line of defence against pathogens (harmful substances like virus and bacteria) by killing these off in the acidic environment. If there is not enough acid to kill these pathogens, they can then set up shop and cause illness. Further down the line, stress can also increase peristalsis and movement of the intestines, leading to less nutrient absorption, and watery, loose stools. Constant stress can inflame the lining of your gastrointestinal tract, leading to conditions like leaky gut, gastritis, reflux, and ulcers to name a few. This is just a snapshot of how stress impacts our digestion, and if you are someone who is constantly stressed, it's time to look at ways to manage your stress triggers. I love to help clients manage stress as naturopathy has so many tools in the shed to help, including herbal medicine, nutrition, diet and lifestyle tips. If this sounds like you, book in with me so we can get your health back on track. Consults available every Monday and every second Saturday at Alpine Natural Health.

12.01.2022 What's the go with feeling tired all the time? I used to spend my days reaching for a coffee as a pick me up during my infamous afternoon slumps - after all what else is coffee for? I never really got any answers for my chronic tiredness - until I dug deeper into my health and diet. As much as I love coffee, if you are relying on it (or other caffeinated beverages!) for energy to get you through the day, the chances are there are other underlying factors that need to be addr...essed - and reasons why you are always feeling fatigued. Are you eating enough protein? What is your blood sugar doing? Are you chronically stressed? Is there an underlying thyroid issue or post-viral component at play? Is your gut absorbing nutrients effectively? Are you getting enough quality sleep? There are many reasons you may be feeling constantly fatigued and this is where naturopathy has the time and ability to investigate your individual situation, with many tools at hand to improve your energy and work towards better health. If this sounds like you, naturopathy may just be your way forward. For available appointment times, click on the book now button or send me a message.

05.01.2022 WHAT CAUSES POOR GUT HEALTH? There are a myriad of factors that can impair gut health and contribute to IBS symptoms. Poor diet, medications, chronic stress, infection and alcohol consumption are just a few of the factors that can damage the gut, impair digestion and lead to chronic symptoms such as bloating, IBS, reflux etc.... Poor gut health can also have significant impacts on our mood, mental health, immune system and skin issues. When the gut is not working optimally, we are unable to digest our food efficiently which can lead to nutrient deficiencies, imbalances in our beneficial gut bacteria and systemic inflammation which can affect many other organs of the body. The gut really is at the centre of health. If you are wanting to investigate your gut health further feel free to DM me or click BOOK NOW button to book an appointment.

05.01.2022 This year has taken a toll on many people both mentally and physically. Battling depression or anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. If we can break the stigma associated with mental health, more people will feel comfortable to open up about how they are feeling and seek help. Don't fear the unknown, become educated and know that mental illness is prevalent and not what it may seem. This info graphic sums up perfectly the misconceptions people can have on this topic. ... Let's break the stigma. Let's help others feel comfortable to break their silence and suffering.

04.01.2022 R U OK? Mental health awareness has never been more important, given the year that has been. Before Covid hit, an average of 8 Australians died of suicide EVERY DAY- 65,000 attempts were recorded annually and 1 in 4 Australians suffer from a mental health issue at some point in their lives. These stats are uncomfortable and confronting but we NEED to talk about this. We need to let our family, friends, neighbours, acquaintances know that we are here for them so they don't ...have to suffer in silence. Be their sounding board to just listen, really LISTEN to them without judgement or complaint. Having a mental illness doesn't mean you are crazy, delusional or dangerous. It can happen to anyone and at anytime. It could be your best friend, your work colleague, your parent, your sibling, your child, even you - mental health issues don't discriminate. We need to remove this stigma of mental illness, so more people feel comfortable opening up about how they are feeling. The simple act of checking in on someone and asking the question - are you okay - can help save a life. Knowing at least one person cares can change the trajectory of mental illness. This campaign is about raising awareness that it is okay to not be okay. We don't need to, and simply can't have our shit together all the time. Life can throw us curve balls at any time and it's fair to say 2020's curve ball has been the size of a damn meteorite. So please, check in on those people you love. Ask them how they are going. Listen. Check in. Be empathetic. Send them something nice. We need to wrap our arms around one another (virtually) in this absolute cluster...... of a year. If you need help, please reach out. You are NOT alone. LIFELINE: 13 11 14 BEYOND BLUE: 1300 224 636 KIDS HELPLINE: 1800 55 1800 SUICIDE CALL BACK SERVICE: 1300 659 467 Ref: www.ruok.org.au

02.01.2022 Melbourne, you are my home, my heart Times are so tough and my heart is heavy as the bustling city we once knew is but a ghost town with a faint footstep here or there. Kindness. A listening ear. A calm voice. A helping hand. So call your friends. Your family. Check in on those you love. Speak less and listen more. so people no longer suffer in silence, I for one am dreaming of the day I can again smell the aroma of freshly brewed coffee on Degraves St, filling my belly with the best food in the country! Or going to watch my fave band play at the many of our amazing venues. And not to mention taking my daughter to watch our beloved footy team at the MCG. I love Melbourne for what it was and will still be when we get through this. What do you love about Melbourne? Let's. Get. This. Shit. Done. Melbourne.
