25.01.2022 A modern day toy box! Some baskets to cater for the LEGO collection & all those other little bits & pieces. With some open shelves for books & the bigger toys. The idea of this lower shelving unit not only serves as storage to put all the toys in but also caters for a bench to sit some toys on like cars, trucks, puzzles and all those wooden toys (Im sure most of you with kids have) like the cakes, tea sets, coffee machine, cash register etc. This shelving unit would also l...ook great as a tv cabinet or a display/storage cabinet. 24.01.2022 The boat rebuild || this was a $500 eBay bargain (Although I had to drive to Sydney to collect). It was this particular hull shape I was chasing as I had a design and layout in mind so I could make this multipurpose for all the different water sports I wanted to be able to achieve from the one boat. As you can see (> swipe) it wasnt pretty in the beginning. I had to pull up the floor to replace the rotted stringers, keel and also did a full transom rebuild. I removed the c...entre console and remade the front hatches from marine ply so they were flush on the front casting deck. I wanted to have a back casting deck but also wanted to be able to have back seats so the boat could accommodate more then only 2 people so I opted for a removable back casting deck. I built the casting deck out of marine ply and a ledge around the back inside of the boat for the edge of the deck to sit on for support and sourced seats that would fold down low enough to be able to comfortably fit underneath the casting deck when it was in. And fitted a mounting block towards the nose of the boat for the electric motor to fix too. All the marine ply was sealed to protect it from water absorption. I then re-carpeted the whole floor, front and back casting decks and hatches. Pic no. 7 shows the back end inside with and without the casting deck in. I also had to make a timber mould so that I could bend up and shape the Perspex windscreen. A fresh coat of 2 pack paint and she was ready for her maiden voyage! The use this vessel has got being so multipurpose is priceless, it can be used for fishing (most importantly), water skiing and leisurely boating with family & friends. And as the boat mechanic said that installed the motor it goes like a Zyrtec I really get so much satisfaction out of all these random projects utilising my trade skills in different ways. 24.01.2022 The main objectives with this kitchen was keeping it low cost, functional and with a fresh new modern look. We worked with the original placement of the sink, oven and range hood to keep costs to a minimum. Notice in the before pic the range hood is actually a plaster bulk head, corniced around so moving this would have created a lot more work. It was important to work with this original placement in the design stage so it could be incorporated into the new kitchen in the ex...act same spot. The cupboards and drawers are a bevelled style finished in a high gloss with a post formed laminate bench top. Can we just take a moment to appreciate that timber flooring also It was covered under that horrendous old vinyl. 20.01.2022 THE MASTERPIECE We get asked so much about this beautiful kitchen (in our cover photo). This was the first kitchen I designed and built over a decade ago and it will forever be one of my all time favourites! We went all out with this one, trying something new with the flutes & quatrefoil carvings in the island and end panels, I worked on so many different carving designs before we decided on this style. I wanted as much detail as possible with every aspect of this kitchen s...o with the mantle piece over the oven I added extra detail in the edge moulding and arched panel, also using exposed kick rails and corbels. We used a traditional floral textured glass in the top cupboards which complemented this kitchen so perfectly. It is such a classic, timeless, period style kitchen design! 17.01.2022 Victorian Ash timber bench tops for this custom design study. These select grade Vic Ash timber tops made from impressive 150mm x 50mm boards. The gum veins & natural defects were filled with a clear exopy resin which subtly fills the open holes really bringing these natural features to life. The cabinetry design was kept simple with a couple sets of drawers in each corner of the room with a double height drawer at the bottom for a suspension filing system and open shelving ...in the middle. 16.01.2022 THE CARAVAN RESTORATION - this was epic! We came across this old onsite van & wanted to make it ours. It was in a bad way though with far too much mould & rot to leave as is. So we stripped it bare, back to the frame and started again. We wanted to keep it as simple and low cost as possible though so didnt change much of the design or layout re-utalising as much of the original framing of the walls, cupboards, beds, kitchen etc that we could. The walls & ceiling were re-clad...ded in new panelling, I made new doors for the cupboards throughout and panels for the sides of the beds & couch. We re-upholstered the couches and bunk mattresses and re-laminated the table, kitchen bench top & splash back still utilising the original sink, mini oven, range hood & microwave. I re-configured the kitchen cupboards slightly to lower the mini oven below the bench height and added a hinged bench top above it as it also had a single cooktop plate on top, this gave the option of more bench space also (as it was limited). The top bunk also hinged down which then turned it from a set of bunks to a couch, which suited us more at the time (pre kids). We reused the original light shades and power points and laid new vinyl flooring throughout. 12.01.2022 Chevel Mirror Stand I created this timber frame addition matching the mirror to turn this into a chevel mirror. It was a special piece my client had since a little girl, turning it into a chevel mirror that swivels makes it more practical to use rather then it learning against a wall. 11.01.2022 FRENCH PROVINCIAL ~ if youve ever been into Zinati Hair you will have seen these pieces. These benches & desk were a specific custom design by my wife and which I then had the pleasure of bringing to life. I opted to purchase ready made cabriole legs for this job because we needed 16 all up (and time was of the essence) we also purchased ready made carved appliques to add to the front of the benches and corbels for the desk. The mitre work & provision for the glass inlay o...n the bench tops needed to be millimetre precise so the glass fit perfectly. We added strapping to the desk door & drawer fronts to give it some feature with a panelled look. 11.01.2022 Barn Style Doors it’s really rewarding to work with a customer with such a unique design. This was a specific custom design with a more modern take on a traditional barn style door opting for diagonal paneling instead of the more common vertical panels. Incorporating two different thickness materials with the thicker frame and mid rail for stability but narrower paneling for more detail. The black wrought iron door sliders are a staple finish on this style door. 11.01.2022 MODERN KITCHEN RENOVATION ~ this was such a great little kitchen space! Even though its not huge it still ticks all the boxes with plenty of bench space for the cook of the house. The plaster cornice surrounding the top cupboards were existing in the original kitchen which we wanted to save (if possible). It was a delicate operation trying to remove the old top cupboards and keeping the cornice in tact avoiding extra work of cornice & plaster patches of the ceiling but we d...id it! The new top cupboards where then made to fit perfectly within the original cornice surround. It adds that little more cupboard storage in this compact kitchen, gives a subtle divide between the kitchen / dining area and also allows a place to conceal the range hood above the cook top. Keeping within a more modern theme & neutral colour scheme we opted for a flat panel, door & drawer style with a soft bevel edge in a beige gloss finish. The slightly darker laminate top & fresh white subway splash back tiles work so well together combined with the wall & floor colour this whole colour combo works perfectly. 09.01.2022 This antique restoration was a joint project, I got the good job of the sanding and prep work and Kirst did the staining and polishing. We wanted to reupholster the stool in a brocade type fabric to match more with the era of this antique set, searching high and low to no avail. We ended up finding these pillow cases at the op shop and it ticked all the boxes of what we were looking for. 08.01.2022 MANTLE PIECE RESTORATION this original mantle piece made some time back in the 1930s when this period style home was constructed is made from Australian Red Cedar timber. This mantle was looking old, tired & in need of a freshen up, another one in the lounge room had been painted white I pulled them both off the fire places and into pieces so they could be sanded right back and re-polished, enhancing that stunning red colour in the timber. This prized Australian timber... species could be found throughout this home & many homes of this era in the skirting, architraves, doors & windows. Australian Red Cedar trees natural habitat in Australia is the subtropical forest of NSW & QLD. Unfortunately it was heavily & unsustainably exploited in the 19th & early 20th centuries leaving the species essentially commercially extinct with limited availability now. The timber is red in colour, easy to work & very highly valued. 08.01.2022 Victorian Style ~ French Doors || Custom Designed, Custom Made || sometimes you have an idea of something in particular you want but cant find it anywhere, thats when custom designing and creating comes in. With these doors we wanted a shorter solid bottom panel, a longer glass panel above and detail with steps on the inner and outer sides of the moulding on the bottom panel. I also added a chamfer(bevel) around the timber edge of the glass panels stopping 40mm from the c...orners to add more feature to these panels. With the Tradco Henley lever set complimenting perfectly on these traditional Victorian style doors. 07.01.2022 CUSTOM MADE WINDOWS These double hung windows were a specific design to match up with the other windows in the house. We used chestnut timber for the construction of these windows as its a durable and dense timber thats suitable for optimum longevity and its a well priced material. We wanted to replicate the same design of the other original windows and even sourced a traditional weight and pulley system which is what was commonly used in windows of that era to hold t...hem in an open position. How the weight & pulley system works : To be able to facilitate the windows movement, a sash panel is balanced by a counterweight, in either steel, cast iron or lead sash weight. This is connected to the window via a sash cord and runs over the top of a pulley. The frame design of these windows is important to allow space for the sash weights to be concealed within a timber cavity that forms the box frame. 07.01.2022 BASSINET ~ this was a piece Id always dreamt of creating one day. An antique style rocking bassinet with turned spindles along the sides & carving on the head board. The feature and detail in this American White Oak timber is beyond incredible. The caster wheels on the legs and swivels for the rocking mechanism fit perfectly with this antique replica. The change table was actually second hand and originally finished in a light golden coloured polish. 05.01.2022 VANITY ~ slim line vanity with semi recessed basin and square edge laminate bench top. This slim line vanity worked perfectly in this bathroom as we had the space in length but not so much in depth. We finished this look in a bevelled high gloss door & drawer front with a traditional black wrought iron handle to tie in with the old world charm of this period style home. 05.01.2022 CHEVAL MIRROR I created this antique replica over 12 years ago as a surprise gift for my wife. I opted for Queensland Walnut timber for this piece as it gives such a striking darkness and depth like original antiques and the timber feature is beautiful. I designed, turned and carved all components specifically to replicate an antique piece. The clear coat finish highlights the natural grain and colour, no stain needed when the right timber is chosen. 05.01.2022 Restoration project ~ what a stunning set! This Queen Anne Victorian desk was sourced second hand and after a light sand, stain & polish it has come up a treat. 03.01.2022 LAUNDRY || this was a rather roomy laundry area to work with, which meant there were plenty of options. Bench space storage This washing machine/dryer cupboard layout with the pull out washing basket shelf underneath is a huge favourite of mine. Its a great way to utilise space and looks rather then having them just sitting one on top of the other or both under bench (making for back breaking work) this option not only looks tidy and sleek but its so functional and ...user friendly. Some people opt to have the dryer upside down to lower the dial and door height and some dryers have the option to flip the dial panel too so the brand writing is up the right way. 01.01.2022 Herringbone Parquetry Dining Table This dining table looks incredible! Made from solid American White Oak Timber, a highly featured and impressive species and one of my favourite timbers. What a fun, creative piece to design and bring to life. Working with the customer combining lots of different ideas into one and given the approval to add some of my own ideas also, we ended with a really special and unique custom design! The board selection was so important, selecting th...e most featured boards for the more seen angles and the placement of every piece of herringbone laid so the mix of board colours was perfectly highlighting each other. The legs were laminated together with 4 x 45mm boards, giving a solid 180mm x 180mm pair of legs. They were then turned on a lathe, mirroring the two carvings.
