The intention is to create a virtual wall of heroes of our #WWII #veterans. Hes inviting all Australians to post a selfie while holding a photo of a relative or an unrelated veteran that served in WWII, include the story of the connection with the veteran and to use the hashtag #OneInAMillion. 13.01.2022 The word honour doesnt seem to do this experience justice. I had the esteemed privilege of meeting and photographing Mr Gilbert Jan, WWII veteran. For those who werent aware, back in the day, the Army and Navy wouldnt let people of Asian descent join. He was so determined to serve his country, he enlisted in the RAAF at the tender age of 18. As a Leading Aircraftsman (LAC), Radio Technician / Operator (Wireless maintenance mechanic), Gilbert was posted to the Philippine...s, Singapore, Hong Kong, Borneo, Vietnam and Darwin. Its been such a humbling experience to meet and learn from Gilbert. He received an OAM not only in recognition for his efforts in the RAAF but also because he was the brains and brawn behind the compilation of 500 Australian ex-servicemen and women who served in WW1, WW2 & subsequent conflicts, who were of Chinese or part Chinese descent. All their names are immortalised in Chinatown Sydney. To the Jan family, thank you for allowing me to photograph and share Gilberts story. A copy of his portrait is only a tiny token of my appreciation.
