The wines are always 100% Sangiovese from the small hilltop village of Montalcino, located in the heart of Tuscany and enjoying a unique combination of favourable weather and less fertile, rocky soils which result in excepti...onal, concentrated and long-lived expressions of Sangiovese. Very favourable weather conditions, with plenty of rain the preceding winter and warm, dry and mostly stable throughout the growing season allowed producers to harvest ripe, clean and concentrated fruit in late September and early October. Spring is around the corner, the weather will start to warm, which means it is a perfect time to drink aromatic chilled white wine from Alsace, France. The Alsace wine region stretches along the Rhine river in the north-east of France. Alsatian wine is all about aromas: they are floral and spicy, have bright acidity yet also offer a rich texture with moderate alcohol. For today's LOT we are offering terrific prices on six wines from two producers. Famille Hugel was established in 1639 by Hans Ulrich Hugel, and is one of the largest landholders (around 120 hectares of vineyards), making it one of the region's most important producers. Located in Riquewihr, over the years the estate has built an enviable reputation for the consistency and quality of its wines. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is located in Turckheim, Alsace, and has been producing a range of wines from its own vineyards across the region. 18.01.2022 THIS WEEKS LOT: NERVI-CONTERNO NEBBIOLO The DOCG of Gattinara was granted in 1990, yet very few know of this northern Piedmontese wine region. Located at higher altitude than its (much) more famous neighbours Barolo and Barbaresco, Gattinara remains relatively unknown, and has seen total plantings decrease over the last century to less than 100 hectares today. The region's most famous producer, Nervi, was established in 1906 and was recently purchased by Roberto Conterno, pro...prietor and winemaker at his father's eponymous estate Giacomo Conterno. As many would know, Giacomo Conterno's wines are amongst the most revered - not just in Barolo, but throughout the entire wine world. Whilst they share many similarities with great traditionally-styled Barolo, the wines tend to have a touch more softness and flesh, yet retain savoury, very fine tannin structure. They age superbly for many decades, yet are quite delicious (in a mineral-laden kind of way) in their youth. These wines are utterly compelling, and whilst not inexpensive, they look like true bargains alongside Roberto's other legendary Nebbiolos! The extraordinary Mencia-based wines produced by Descendientes de Jose Palacios (DJP for short) have long been favourites of ours. Similar in texture and weight to Pinot Noir, but with some characteristics of cool-climate Syrah, Mencia is a brilliant food wine. The 2017 vintage was warm and dry, producing wines that are balanced and refined but upfront and immediately accessible. When Nat and Rosalie White visited Burgundy in the 1960s they experienced what so many of us have - that life-changingrevelation.Tasting wine from barrel, they fell in love (with wine - they were already in love with each other).A decade later they'd purchased five hectares of land in Main Ridge - with no water, power or sewerage connections - and in 1975 commenced planting grape vines.Thus, Main Ridge Estate was born.The first wines were release...d in 1980, andthe Peninsula's firstlicenced winery was up and running. Nat and Rosalie crafted exquisite wines, particularly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, over four decades, garnering a reputation as producing not just one (well, two) of the Peninsula's finest Pinot Noirs, but arguably amongst the best made throughout Australia. The Sexton family purchased Main Ridge Estate fromthe Whites in 2015, when Nat and Rosalie retired, and son James has been quietly, carefully, meticulously and respectively continuing Nat'stradition of making exquisite wines.Indeed, Nat remains a constant presence, acting as consultant and guiding the viticulture and winemaking, but make no mistake, James has more than proved himself capable already of maintaining, and, perhaps enhancing further this legendary (and tiny, did I mention the mere seven acres of total plantings) maker.Around 60% of production is Pinot Noir, split amongst the two labels ('The Acre' and 'Half Acre'). Steve Lubiana has been crafting exceptional wines from his vineyard on the banks of the Derwent River, just north of Hobart, for some 30 years. Over the decades he has placed an ever-increasing emphasis on the use of sustainable methods, creating distinctive, vibrant and complex wines. The first certified biodynamic vineyard in Tasmania, Lubiana has continued to raise the bar through organic viticulture, modern cellar technology and minimist winemaking practices. Essentially allowing the vineyard itself to express its character as best it can. The debut release of three single-block Pinot Noirs - Ruscello, Il Giardino and La Roccia - each has been singled out as expressing their differences in terroir through gradations of structure and texture. 09.01.2022 This Week's LOT: STUNNING BASS PHILLIP PINOT NOIR Just-released 2018 'Crown Prince'... I'm sure you all know that Bass Phillip is not only one of our favourite Pinot Noir producers, but has long been recognised as one of the very best in Australia. The 'Crown Prince' Pinot Noir sits below the 'Reserve', 'Premium' and 'Estate' in the Bass Phillip hierarchy (and is thankfully priced well below them too!). It comes from a high-density vineyard planted in 1996 in Leongatha, and tends to be a little lighter and more approachable earlier than the three big guns. We've managed to get hold of a decent chunk of this delicious little drop, 2018 BASS PHILLIP 'Crown Prince' Pinot Noir. $61 per bottle offer price (normally $72). Really attractive aromas of red and dark cherry, undergrowth and a little spice. On the palate the wine is crisp and vibrant, showing plenty of crunchy, juicy cherry flavours, a hint of herbal, forest floor character. Louis Boillot crafts magnificent, elegant, perfumed and finely structured Burgundies from his myriad of village and premiers cru plots from some of the very best villages and appellations.
