23.01.2022 This video talks about making boxes using solid timber or plywood. The presenter demonstrates using cabinet carcass's rather than small boxes such as jewellery boxes, but the principles should still apply. Towards the end he mentions that he doesn't believe that wood movement in solid timber is a big issue, but I have measured wood movement in my shed to be approximately 2% over the course of a year so I'm not sure I agree with him. Your mileage may vary but I'd certainly kee...p that in mind when making cabinet boxes. Personally, I'd err on the side of caution when it comes to wood movement. Overall I think this is a fairly decent video about making cabinet boxes. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMIGLI3D1HQ

23.01.2022 A beautiful chair I saw at Musee d'Orsay in Paris.

20.01.2022 I clock my screws, meaning I orient the slot in the screw head so it’s in line with the grain of the wood. But I don’t think it’s a mark of superior aesthetics.... It’s just something I do, like lining up the silverware on the dining table just so. I can’t help it. Some people who don’t clock their screws, however, take perverse glee in sending me photos of beautiful antiques with their screws un-clocked. 14.01.2022 Some more experimenting with different fillers of the burn. Tried epoxy, glitter glue, acrylic paint and melting wax crayons. Crayons seemed to penetrate the gr...ain despite using a sealer. Great tip from another post was to wait for an hour or so and remove epoxy/glue before it had gone solid with a chisel. Much less sanding. See more

04.01.2022 Mark has his entries finished, how is yours going??

03.01.2022 Gluing up multiple boards to make a drawer bottom is a reasonably common activity. You can quickly prepare the boards by ganging them up and planing several boards at once. Firstly, arrange the boards so that they give you the most pleasing appearance. Draw a cabinet makers triangle across the boards so that you can put them back in the correct order. The key to this technique is that the adjoining edges are facing in the same direction - one way to do this is to "fold" pairs... of boards along the join line. Clamp the boards together, and then place them in the vice for planing. Using your handplane firstly level the edges of boards so that they are flat across their length and width, then plane a small hollow along their length. Once you've done that, remove the clamped boards from the vice, flip them end over end, put them back in the vice and repeat the process. When you've done that the edges should be ready for gluing together. Take the boards from the vice and lay them back out on the bench. Use the carpenters triangle to align them correctly and check that the joints are tight. You may find that you need to repeat this process. Glue them together once you're happy.

02.01.2022 Unfortunately due to recent events out of anyone's control, the WA Wood Show has been cancelled for this year. At this stage the OOTW committee are looking at w...hat options are available to us, but it is highly likely we will have to cancel the exhibition as well. Hopefully I will be able to advise you all further in a few weeks. Wishing all of you and your family are safe during this time. Keep woodworking. Shawn OOTW Curator.
