16.01.2022 To view or not to view The importance of a viewing Whether to have the body present and available for a viewing is often one of the most difficult decisions families have to decide on. A viewing may be important to a family for a variety of reasons such as, a family member may not have been present when someone passed away or had not seen them for a while. What does a viewing mean: The coffin or portion of the coffin lid is left open allowing the mourners the opportunity to... have one last look at their loved one to say goodbye. A viewing allows mourners the opportunity to share their grief and say goodbye on a personal level. Gifts, letters and photos may also be placed with your loved one at the time of a viewing. The mortuary attendants wash, dress and prepare a body in such a way that having a viewing may result in a better experience for the family; and therefore, are able to remember them in a better way than they may have seen them just after they passed. In some circumstances, a funeral home may advise the family against a viewing and other options can be discussed to ensure the family are still able to say goodbye. If a viewing will be taking place some time after a person has passed away, it may be necessary to consider embalming. This process can be discussed with the funeral director.
