22.01.2022 Sail Sydney 2020 day 2 report by Jake Lilley: Big day in yachting racing in the Sydney Sound with some local heroes as well as some international contingent from Spain and Bermuda really adding to the flavour of the racing. The Spaniard could clearly smell the paella coming from North Head as he loved the left all day while the Bermudian hugged the right probably waving to his adoring family from middle head. While the Australian preferred to pin pong up the Middle it was on... for young and old each race. With a sloppy Easterly swell and refractory waves adding to the ferry wash, the Finns made the most of what was left from yesterday’s Southerly and enjoyed some classic Finn conditions. Plenty of action for the first three races and undoubtedly more to come over the weekend. Hold on to your hats sports fans

22.01.2022 Finn sailors of RQYS should make a date with the partners at Ancora. Jane and I went last night. Best meal in ages

21.01.2022 3-4 October 2020 NSW Finn State Championship report by Jake Lilley: A great weekend was had by all with a classic NNE Sydney Harbour breeze and strong outgoing tide on the harbour made for classic Finn - Style racing with the big boys relishing the conditions. Saturday was solid gradient breeze and a swing-off for those who could get out of the start in good shape with downwind pressure hunting proving vital. ... Sunday was expected to blow dogs off chains but the fickle gradient never filled completely leaving a few grovelling souls floundering in 4 knots at times while those with the gods on their side and a keen sense of smell for the best pressure scooted off in narrow 15knot lanes. Rafa Trujillo and Anthony Nossitter in a tight battle for superior Olympic legendary status with the Spaniard getting the better of the Aussie on home water. It was great to see a flawless regatta run by Woollahra Sailing Club in the Lead-Up to the National Championships in January with fierce on-water battles and welcoming vibes onshore. Not to mention the best quality view in town with the Rose Bay Foreshore. Special mention to James Bevis for showing everybody who was King of the Top Mark a few times!

20.01.2022 Day 3 Sail Sydney report by Commodore Jay Harrison: Sail Sydney; Finns Day 3. The course was moved seaward in the Sound, which looked to be an improvement.... The sea had abated from the previous day but was still an opportunity for the officionados and a challenge for the part timers. The breeze looked like it might soften but generally stayed in that 15-20 slot, with bits of 22. The first division was very close and consistent, with Jake continuing to show the way. On the pin at full speed a fraction of a second late and hiking like a plank. Rafa held onto his hip like the champion he is and Jake couldn’t tack to port till he did. Jake opened up on the runs each time and sailed to convincing victories, especially in the last race which was a bit fresher. No one beat Rafa for second, but Rob looked like he could have at times. There wasn’t much in it. Ditto with Rocky who swapped the last place on the podium with Rob, only 2 points behind him after 6 heats The second division was easily won by Condie, who, having dropped a bag of cement from his physique recently struggled a bit upwind. Peter and Craig also sailed well to finish all the races in mentally challenging and tiring conditions. Ditto for Rob and Andy who joined me ashore after 2 races. A credit to all who competed It was out of my pay grade. Jay, spectator

19.01.2022 Eleven Finn sailors racked up on the start line for the first three races of the New Year regatta on Sydney Harbour. It was a beautiful summers day, but the breeze was a patchy and fickle 8 knot south-easter. Jake Lilley showed how it was done leading from Rafa. The canny commodore Jay Harrison also showed great form with three solid results to be sitting in third overall. Three races are scheduled for tomorrow in what looks to be a beautiful 10-15 knot nor-east Seabreeze.

15.01.2022 SDYC December ODW had a nice turn-out of 8 Finns. A light-air weekend tested the sailer's determination, and a great Race Committee was able to squeeze in 2 ra...ces each day. Saturday was so light and lumpy, we finished 2 races, each Course #2 (Start-Windward-Finish) only 0.5 miles w/ Tim Flemming in his new Finn winning the first race. On Sunday, RC was able to move further South and provide more typical light conditions. Robert Kinney (NHYC) was consistently in front both days with a total score of 5. Lee Hope, eeked-out a one-boat lead for 2nd place over James Buley in 3rd overall. Special thanks to Robert Kinney who towed a double-trailer from Newport for him and David Wood. The Finn Fleet thanks SDYC & SDYC Race Committee for maintaining awesome racing opportunities in challenging times--set a course, and we will be there!

Teknik, fysik, timing etc.

13.01.2022 Paris 2024 decisions taken by the IOC. World Sailing has received confirmation from the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Executive Board, on the event pr...ogramme and athlete quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The decisions announced on 7th December came following an IOC Programme Commission recommendation. They were as follows: Mixed Kiteboarding (Formula Kite) and the Mixed Two Person Dinghy (470) will feature at the Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Competition. Importantly for the Finn class, the IOC would like to further review the Mixed Two Person Offshore Keelboat Event in order to properly assess the key considerations around safety and security of the athletes. The specific event proposal will be decided as soon as practicably possible but no later than 31 May 2021. Whilst the reasons given for the review does not mention the more pertinent concerns of cost and availability to all nations of two person keelboats, it does at least leave the door open slightly to the Finn making a return. Now is the time for the IFA to get it's act together and lobby hard for the Finn to be re-selected for Paris 2024!

11.01.2022 2. JULEDAGSRÆS i Dragør.

09.01.2022 Dear Finn Masters, I hope you are all keeping well during these strange times and have been able to get in some Finn sailing during the past year. It has been a... challenging year for us, but there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel, and hopefully during 2021 our sailing will start to return to somewhere near normal. While I am sure those of us in the north are enjoying watching the sailing in the southern hemisphere over our winter, I can’t wait for summer to return, and to once again enjoy Finn sailing on warm, sunny days. Planning is going very well for our 2021 Masters Championships. The Finn World Masters in Medemblik is looking very popular with entry numbers already exceeding expectation and approaching 150. With the Finn we have the perfect tool for social distancing, keeping fit, having fun, and, when we are allowed, meeting our friends from across the world. I look forward to seeing you all soon, but until then, please stay safe, enjoy your sailing if you can get on the water, and I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Andy Denison President, Finn Masters

09.01.2022 We had an interesting training session the other day - 30 kn of westerly wind, up to 2 m waves with a smaller north-westerly chop on top of it. A single Finn tr...aining with a couple of top Lasers. It was amazing to see the performance difference between a Laser and a Finn - in 3 minutes of sailing, the Finn would pull from 15 m behind to 100 m in front, and 50 m to windward of the Laser. That means a speed difference of 1,25 knots, and 5 degrees in pointing angle. Downwind the two would perform almost equal, with only a slight edge for the Finn. The difference upwind comes mostly from the rig. The Finn is 25 cm longer, so you can speculate it would have a hull speed 0,2 kn faster than the Laser. The laser sail is 8,1 m2 vs 10,8 for the Finn - sail area not being exactly an advantage in 30 kn of wind, but a little compensated by Finn’s superior righting moment, 115 kgm vs. 90 kgm for the Laser. Most of the speed difference comes from the way the mast and the sail work. The Laser mast is way too soft sideways in its lower part, and on the other hand stiff in the upper part (relatively to the lower) both sideways and fore-aft. The sail does not de-power automatically, instead you have to use enormous vang tension to flatten the sail through mast bend. This results in a very tight, nearly straight leech, with a little twist in the sail, and still too much fullness in the head. A very difficult boat to sail, demanding constant playing with the sheet and heading while pitching in the waves. The Finn mast, by contrast, is very stiff sideways up to about 2/3, then flips to the side in its last meter or so. The top of the sail is completely flat, the leech is totally opened by wind pressure, so much that uppermost square meter of the sail is periodically backwinding as the boat pitches in the waves. This adds considerably to the righting moment, the upper triangle supporting the boat against heeling. In medium airs the Laser comes closest to performance compared to the Finn - in light airs, again, there is no competition, as the Finn with nearly 3 sqm more sail area sails rings around the Laser. Europe also beats the Laser in all winds, although it is nearly 1 m shorter. See the photos attached - not from this session, unfortunately, we had no camera in the rib. See more

04.01.2022 We are excited to share the start of the 2020-2021 winter circuit for the U.S. Finn Class! The North Americans start on Dec. 18 at the Coconut Grove Sailing Clu...b in Miami, where the growing South Florida fleet squares off against challengers from across the United States, including Peter Frissell (USA 101) and Stephen Smeulders (USA 1000) from the Great Lakes, as well as Tokyo 2021 representative Luke Muller (USA 91) This will be followed by the Lauderdale Olympic Classes Regatta Jan 15-18, in place of the Miami OCR the Lasers and Finns will sail the week prior at LYC. We also anticipate an invitation to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron's One Design Midwinters in mid-March. Obviously all of this is dependent on public health concerns and the decisions of individual sailors, however the Great Lakes Finns and the rest of the U.S. Finn Association look forward to hosting more, better regattas with stronger fleets in 2021, and we hope to see you there!
