24.01.2022 From mid-April eligible individuals will be able to apply online through myGov to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation before 1 July 2020. They will also be able to access up to a further $10,000 from 1 July 2020 until 24 September 2020. This could provide very valuable relief for some households doing it tough at the moment, but careful consideration should also be made for the impact this may have on your end retirement balance. Our superannuation is there to fund o...ur retirement and any early access to the funds can hinder long term growth. In addition to this, the markets have had a decent drop from all time highs and cashing out now is effectively locking in those losses. It shouldn’t be a decision taken lightly, but the team at Finwest is here to assist in the process if it is required.

13.01.2022 COVID-19 and the issue of unlisted assets. For a smooth stream of investment returns over time, many super funds invest in unlisted investments linked to an underlying real asset like a shopping centre or office building (not traded daily on the ASX). These assets are more likely to provide a stable flow of income to investors from rental payments. There are concerns about the less frequent valuation of large unlisted investments and the difficulties involved in selling them ...quickly if the super fund needs to recoup its money rapidly. As most super funds allow their members to switch between investments options, the fund must have sufficient money available to allow it to buy and sell the necessary funds. The unlisted asset holdings of super funds are typically revalued quarterly. But a number of large funds have made ad hoc revaluations in the unfolding COVID-19 crisis, cutting unlisted infrastructure, for example, by about 7.5 per cent. If a fund refuses to write down the value of these assets to realistic levels, the resulting unit price will be artificially high. Members in this fund with better information and higher levels of engagement will have very strong incentives to redeem and either move to a defensive option (cash) or exercise their choosing in moving to a different fund. This may be the case when members opt to redeem up to $20k cash as part of the Government’s Stimulus package. To the extent that the unit price remains artificially high as redemptions mount, the outcome for those less informed and less engaged members will be devastating. Industry super funds have been criticised for their aggressive investment strategies involving high allocations to illiquid assets such as unlisted infrastructure and property. There is a fear of a liquidity crisis for these funds. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has a number of tools at it’s disposal to deal with superannuation funds, including the ability to direct mergers, which could be used where a fund is unable to meet the needs of members.

13.01.2022 Personal risk management is a critical foundation stone of any financial plan. The key personal insurances are: - Life Insurance - Total and permanent disability insurance (TPD) - Income Protection (IP)... - Trauma Insurance Each of these insurances play an important but different role in protecting you. While age has some bearing on personal insurance priorities, individual circumstances must also be taken into account Your financial adviser is ideally placed to help you design the risk management plan that's right for you.

06.01.2022 Everyone loves a sale unless it’s a sale on the share market! When the markets dip like this we have to be careful not to panic and sell assets too early. Once we do this you lose the ability of your funds to recover and you're effectively locking in your losses. The market always recovers from these dips - it's just a question of when. In times like this it is always best to keep the lines of communication open. We are here and available if you need us :)
