01.01.2022 I have made a recent discovery! And I figure if I am just getting this lesson now at 47 years of age (shhhh), maybe it would be helpful to share? Bear with me, this could get long ;-)... So we know that we have a primitive brain - responsible for all of our involuntary processes. Breathe. Beat heart. Pump blood. Etc etc. And we have our functional brain. The part that houses our memories, emotions and behaviours. And allows us to string together complex movements and sentences. Well - these two brain also house our thought patterns. Our primitive, innate thoughts in one. We call this our unconscious. And our complex, considered thoughts in the other - our consciousness. Still with me? So - what I have learned is those primitive, innate thoughts have a sole purpose. Survival. Yep - the sole purpose of the unconscious brain is to keep us safe from the perceived sabre tooth tiger about to tear us limb from limb. Therefore, it never really projects further than the immediate moment. The result of its actions are short term. It doesn't think out how our heart will beat at 2pm tomorrow. It thinks about how it will beat now. The thing is - our primitive brain doesn't really know the difference between real (sabre tooth tiger) danger and perceived danger. In fact, if any situation drives us to feel that rush of adrenaline, it will automatically respond with trying to survive. For those of us who have experienced adverse childhood events (trauma) almost any, everyday event could represent danger. A voice slightly raised? Danger! A stranger drinking a little too much at the BBQ? Danger! Someone telling a 'funny' story about your childhood? Danger! Boom! In kicks your primitive, survival driven, SHORT TERM brain. If you made it this far - well done, nearly there ;-) When this happens often enough, your conscious brain tends to just sit back and wait patiently. You get stuck in short term thinking. Have you reached a certain age and realised you seem to be decades behind your peers? Still living pay check to pay check? House is messy? Can't remember where you left your keys? Struggle to make what should be simple decisions? Perhaps you are functioning exclusively from your primitive brain? The good news? Once you are aware you are functioning from your primitive brain, you are moving the thought from your unconscious to your conscious! And if you do this often enough, you move away from short term survival mode and toward strategic and empowered thinking! By actively shifting a behaviour from unconscious to conscious, you can re-wire your brain! And - cos your a big girl (boy) now, you can actually shape it however you choose to. YOU GET TO WRITE THE SCRIPT THAT STARTS RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT! How awesome is that! Phew. That was super long. But ohhhh - so important!
