25.01.2022 STORIES OF CLOTHES and the role they play in our lives. Such fascinating convos at Salon REaD at Wonky Manor in Brisbane last night. Jessica White: Author wore... her Mums vintage Prue Acton dress in her tribute to clearing out her Mums wardrobe. Pam Greet wore her 45 year-old sarong as she spoke about quitting fashion. I chose to wear an upcycled jumper-skirt from my Sew it Again 2014 project as I spoke about slow clothing philosophy. Michelle mentioned a housemate leaving two bags of clothes, shared amongst friends and most finding new owners. Donna said we are custodians of clothing in our care, and can move them on to others rather than own them for life. Thats possible because clothes have no use-by date, they can be worn until they literally wear out. Lots of men in the audience and when Aunty Cath Jackson asked the question who could sew, about half raised hands (yay, life skills). Co-incidentally I came across Kathleen Noonans recent Courier-Mail column "Lets be honest, hand-me-downs are really dress-ups for grown-ups" which totally resonates (its in the May 5-6 QWeekend edition).
