25.01.2022 ‘It sounds like I’m skiting, but I am good at it because I keep practicing and practicing. I’m passionate about it. Even signwriting guys come up and say, Mate, how do you use brushes like that? and there are not many who do it the way I do. As you get older, you get better at it. And I don’t leave the job until I’m happy with the way it looks.’ Robert Holbery, 78, started his career as an apprentice butcher, however his love for signwriting and passion for lettering, along... with a steady hand, has seen him painting the windows of menu boards, display signs and storefronts around Victoria, and beyond, for more than 56 years. 23.01.2022 Well, it’s another three weeks of restrictions, with up to two hours of exercising allowed per day, outside. 21.01.2022 Even a weed can be transformed into a ‘picture of beauty’. This is the Bridal creeper, which grows prolifically (evasively!) in coastal areas. 20.01.2022 "When you're working in the service of Jesus’ example, we were never told it was going to be easy and it’s always supposed to be complex too. I believe that when the day seems the darkest, that’s when our moment arrives. That's when we’re there to sit up properly and help create the type of community that we want to be part of." - Pip McIllroy is Group Mission Integration Manager Formation and Ethics at St Vincent's Health Australia (based in Fitzroy, Victoria). It is SO W...ONDERFUL to be back 'on the tools' again, taking portraits and writing stories for Melbourne Catholic, post COVID-lockdown. 18.01.2022 Just when you thought we'd gone underground, or got lost in the post-COVID-shopping bonanza, we're back in the kitchen! This time my brother-in-law Naz Cugliari of Il Forno Restaurant is sharing his recipe for Carciofi ripiena (stuffed artichokes). Growing up, this was an absolute delicacy in our home! There's a bit involved, but it's definitely worth the effort. Be sure to watch till the end for the BEST BIT! Thanks for filming Kristina Basile, and thanks for keeping your p...aws out of the food, Fidho and Max. 16.01.2022 From 11.59pm on Wednesday 8th July 2020, Melbourne was to enter a 6-week stage of lockdown where we were only allowed outside for four reasons, including exercise. I decided to mark those 42 days with ‘a photo a day’, highlighting something beautiful from my surrounds, usually taken during my daily walk. Less than 4 weeks later, on 2nd August, Premier Daniel Andrews declared Victoria a State of Disaster. That evening a curfew was imposed, movement was restricted to within a ...5km radius and exercise was limited to one hour (among many other restrictions - work permits, the metro-regional Ring of Steel!) I’ve kept posting a photo a day, well beyond the initial 42-day period, to what has now been 110 days (give or take a day - it’s possible I lost count!) I am SO happy that for the past two days, Melbourne has recorded ZERO Covid cases and ZERO deaths. That’s BRILLIANT! So as of 11.59pm tonight, shops and cafes reopen and we can visit other households (one visit a day!) We can also leave home now for any reason! Though many of us may have hoped for more ‘liftings’, this is something! It really is. Given the hard lockdown is now over, I probably won’t continue ‘the daily count’. I do hope the daily practice of observing the beauty around me, continues though. 14.01.2022 "I’m proud to be principal of Kilbreda, because of the nature of our community. I’m grateful to have had a wonderfully supportive leadership team and staff to navigate these challenging times and grateful to have a wonderful student body who responded so well to the challenges they faced." I left my interview with Nicole Mangelsdorf, principal of Kilbreda College, feeling so inspired and moved! Not only was she managing the Kilbreda College community during the COVID lockdow...n period, but in her own time she amped up her volunteering with Vinnies, from about once a month, to being out in the van every Sunday for the past 7 months! #HeartOfGold Read more: bit.ly/3oJtJgC Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne Catholic Religious Australia Kildare Ministries Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project Catholic Education Melbourne

13.01.2022 Three-cornered garlic, a species of onion. It grows prolifically along the local bush paths. 12.01.2022 I am experimenting with new varieties of gnocchi... this one is wheat and potato free! 10.01.2022 Here's a little something I've been working on during our COVID-19 lockdown period! I love writing cards and letters to family and friends, and don't hesitate to buy beautiful cards and papers, to do so. It finally dawned on me, however, that I could create my own 'deluxe' gift card sets featuring some of my very own favourite photographs. And so I did ... with the help of two very creative graphic designers, @Summa Grafika and South Star Design, and a local printing firm a...nd envelopes business. #SupportSmallBusiness It's $40 for the set of 12 cards (each featuring a different photograph), printed on 350GSM white linen card stock, matching envelopes and postage in Australia. You can choose the square set (120cm x 120cm) or rectangle set (105cm x 148cm). 09.01.2022 As I look at this pic, I can’t help but sing in my head, The road is long... with many a winding turn... And yet, it ain’t a road, and it’s certainly not winding! Rather, this pier is stretching straight out... reaching toward the horizon... and who knows what lays beyond. Perhaps this is what I’m reflecting on at the end of what feels like a big day. Definitely time to call it a night, perhaps lulled to sleep by The Hollies’ song, He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’. It’...s a good song. #day84 #day84lockdown #MelbourneLockdown #pier #horizon #sunset #water #prayer #reflection #weary #beauty

08.01.2022 14 September 2019. Venice one year ago. Reminiscing and indulging in old photos. Sadly, there’s no travel overseas for me and the rest of us Aussies in 2020. (We’ll be lucky if we can leave our shores by mid-year). Just feeling grateful I had the chance to be there when I did. I will always love the light, water, history, and enchanting nature of this amazing and mysterious city. 08.01.2022 October 4 is the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi. He is one of my favourite saints, given his deep love for and appreciation of all of Creation. Today I joined with many others in praying for an outpouring of love and healing for our suffering world. At the end of our time of meditation, we prayed together St Francis’ Prayer of Peace. This has been my prayer today, day 89 of our Melbourne COVID lockdown. Lord,... make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. #day89 #day89lockdown #saintfrancisofassisi #saintfrancis #feastday #prayforcreation #creation #seasonofcreation #laudatosi5 #nature #loveofnature #prayer #peaceprayer #naturephotography #naturephotographer #catholic #faith #hope #love #contemplation #franciscans
