25.01.2022 FECRI researcher, Dr Aparna Jayachandran has recently published interesting new research into Liver cancer- Immune checkpoint molecules are regulated by transforming growth factor (TGF)-1-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common primary liver malignancy accounting for approximately 80-90% of all liver cancers. HCC is frequently diagnosed in cirrhotic patients with higher risk in patients with under...lying liver disease resulting mainly from hepatitis B or C virus infection. Cancer immunotherapy based on immune checkpoint inhibitor drugs have transformed treatment in several cancers including HCC. This study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms regulating immune checkpoint expression in HCC and identified biomarkers associated with poor prognosis in HCC patients. This paper was published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences and was conducted in close collaboration with liver cancer researchers at the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation and the The University of Queensland Read more at www.fecri.org.au/liver-cancerpub21/ Dr Aparna Jayachandran MDP Photography & Video

25.01.2022 We are pleased to add some colour to 2020 as part of the Ballarat Arts Foundation's #creativecorona project. The initiative was designed to give all artists a chance to express, encouraged people to think outside the box and create a celebration of the year. Ballarat botanical artist, Paige Duggan has created a beautiful floral colouring in page, capturing the hope of our logos cornflower. We hope you enjoy this and we would love to see your work. Please tag a photo of your creation using #creativecoronaballarat, #ccballarat, Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute. 25.01.2022 Jim and Shirley Richards were ordinary citizens who have left an extraordinary legacy. The couple lived in Wendouree, and Jim worked for many years for Peter Amor Motors and Shirley worked at the home for the blind. The couple had no children and wished to use the funds they had accumulated over their lifetime to give back to their local community. Developments in cancer research and treatment were close to the couple’s heart. A charitable trust established in their name ...has donated $80,000 to the Institute to assist in funding a project for the Detection of Novel Proteins on Cancer Cells that evade the immune system. For more of this story head to fecri.org.au/supporter-story/jimshirleyleavelegacy/ Thank you to the trustee, BJT Legal for this grant.

25.01.2022 Michael Unwin learnt the art of winemaking around the world with some of the most influential and forward-thinking winemakers of our time. When the time came to settle down to create his own wines, he built his winery in this region, because this is the geographical centre of our best viticultural areas in Western Victoria. Michael Unwin said. Michael Unwin Wines is located in Windermere Ballarat, Victoria, located around 9kms west from Ballarat CBD and nestled between t...he Pyrenees and Grampians, home of award-winning wines and the spectacular untamed ranges. After 16 years being located in Beaufort, Mike opened a new winery and vineyards in Ballarat January of 2020. The winery is well known for the consistently high-calibre wines across a broad range of styles and price. The wine buying fraternity love the no-nonsense approach and enjoy tasting and buying their wines from inside the actual winemaking cellar at Ballarat where they are kept busy. Michael Unwin Wines is a small family owned winery run by Michael and his wife Catherine. Employing a small local staff, the wines are processed and bottled on site from locally grown grapes sourced from their vineyards. Visitors are welcomed into their friendly cellar door, featuring towering racks of wine barrels and the aroma of maturing wines. Tastings are held around standing wine barrels and with a variety of wines on offer. Friendly knowledgeable staff will guide you through their extensive range of our single vineyard One Goat, Umbrella Man and Tattooed Lady varieties, as well as the extensive archive selection. You can also view any activities that may be happening in the winery at the time including vintage, barrel topping, bottling, labelling etc. Michael Unwin Wines feature a ‘fill your own’ cellar door only range, where you can bring along and fill your own bottle! One Goat of the One Goat label fame, will personally greet you as you come through the front gate. Michael Unwin Wines are available for bids in our Online Wine Auction. Go to www.fecri.org.au to visit the auction and support cancer research. Michael Unwin Wines #wineauction #cancerresearch #winelovers

23.01.2022 We are based in Ballarat, non government funded, and are Australia’s only regionally based cancer research centre. The research is focused on the role of the immune system and how it relates and can be used to treat cancer. It is hoped that by identifying these proteins on the surface of cancer cells, druggable targets can be developed to allow the immune system to attack the cancer, without chemotherapy and radiation. The research aims to help patients with a broad range of ...cancers -- from Leukemia, Bowel, Ovarian, Breast, Renal, Lung, Melanoma and Pancreato-Biliary cancers, as well as haematological cancers. For more information on our research, please head to our website See more

22.01.2022 This is Jim Waight and he has a very personal reason for taking on a challenge for cancer research. In November 2019, Jim was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma (a form of blood cancer). Since that time, this father of three has undergone six cycles of chemotherapy and in June 2020, he was declared to be in remission. ... Jim has pulled together a team of 11 very 'average' riders, to cycle 520km in two days from Swan Hill to Port Fairy, with the aim to raise over $20,000 for cancer research. We hope you can assist him in reaching this goal. For more information about Jim and how you can support this group of "Allsorts" and their challenge, visit fecri.org.au/fundraiser/jims-allsorts/

22.01.2022 Sue Bell created Bellwether Wines, based at the 1868 Glen Roy Shearing Shed in Coonawarra. She focuses on special parcels of fruit with no ferment larger than 1T primarily for herself and some contract work for local growers wanting to start their own brands. Sue believes wine alone is irresponsible and a bit strange, so has established a place to share life with wine in it. People are literally invited to see and get involved in the process. Bellwether Wines has much to ...offer. Not only do they produce a seriously tasty drop, you can stay on the property in a glamping bell top tent or bring your own tent using their campground facilities. Now what an experience that would be! No worries about drink-driving as you walk through the majestic red gums to your snuggly woollen doona covered bed and hot water bottle comfort. When fire restrictions allow, enjoy each evening with warmth, wine, food, stars, friendship and conversation by a beautiful camp fire. If you cannot physically get to Bellwether due to current interstate regulations at least you will be able to learn more about their wine straight from the creator. The Bellwether team have created three video tasting experiences (Whites, Reds & Premiums)....as if you were really onsite enjoying the ambience of beautiful Bellwether with Sue Bell. https://www.bellwetherwines.com.au//cellar-door-wine-tasti Sue has a degree in Oenology from Adelaide Uni, postgraduate studies in Viticulture. She has worked for some of the smallest and biggest wine companies in the world, with experience in most South Australian regions, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and vintages in California and Bordeaux. Sue has served on numerous industry boards at a regional, state and national level, was dux of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial and regularly judges at wine shows, including chair of several regional and National shows. Her wines have won numerous medals and trophies and she was Australian Society of Viticulture & Oenology Winemaker of the year in 2014. Sue is also graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program, has a 10 year old daughter and once won the blue ribbon for veggies at the Penola Show. She can often be found at Bellwether in her beloved Coonawarra, making wine, sour dough, gardening, cooking lamb or planning the next music gig or event. In addition to her virtual wine tastings, Sue has let us in on numerous chats over the last few months with some special guests, including our friends at Redman Wines. https://www.bellwetherwines.com.au/pages/videos-1 To bid on some of Bellwether's wines which have been generously donated to our Online Wine Auction, go to www.fecri.com.au Bellwether Wine Cellars #wineauction #cancerresearch #winelovers

21.01.2022 Mitchell Harris Wines is well known and loved by many, especially Ballarat locals for the Mitchell Harris Wine Bar. Based in Ballarat and surrounded by the great wine regions of Western and central Victoria, winemaker John Harris, works with growers in the Pyrenees, Macedon, Ballarat and Henty wine regions to craft wines that display distinctive varietal expression and reflect individual vineyard, vintage and regional character. Intrigued by its tastes, and the art and scie...nce behind its creation, John, whilst completing an Immunology degree, fell in love with everything about wine. After his first vintages at Brown Brothers in the mid 1990’s he never looked back and soon completed a wine science degree whilst gaining valuable cellar and winemaking experience in Western Victoria and also in Oregon. 8 years at Domaine Chandon, working with winemaking teams all over the world, the desire to create his own brand was ignited, and after moving back home to Ballarat and joining forces with his wine loving in-laws, the Mitchells, the Mitchell Harris wine story was born. From the classic Western Victorian pepper and spice in their Pyrenees reds to the cool climate focus and finesse of the Sabre sparkling, the hope is wines will give you a real glimpse into what makes central and western Victorian wine growing regions so special. In 2011 the team fell in love with an abandoned 150 year old workshop in central Ballarat, gave it a good clean and a lot of love, and created the Mitchell Harris Cellar Door and Wine Bar. It’s the place they call home and share their love of winemaking and all good things to eat and drink with locals and visitors alike. Take a look at www.fecri.org.au and support our Online Wine Auction. You will find some beauties generously donated by Mitchell Harris Wines. 18.01.2022 Cancer cells are highly intelligent and have many tactics in avoiding being killed by chemotherapeutics. In response to the physical stress experienced by the cancer cell with chemotherapy exposure, the cell switches on and ramps up the activity of a pro-tumour molecule (red dots). Dr Elif Kadife, PhD, Post-doctoral Research Fellow explains "In our work, we are observing a close interaction between this molecule (red dots) and the ‘powerhouse’ or mitochondria (green) of can...cer cells. We are investigating if the red molecule is helping to reduce the stress in cancer cells by altering the activity of mitochondria. Blocking this molecule may lead to more effective treatment options for ovarian cancer patients." Donations can be made at www.fecri.org.au and go directly to cancer research. Thank you for your support.

17.01.2022 ‘Bindi’, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Originally purchased in the 1950s as part of the larger grazing farm ‘Bundaleer’, ‘Bindi’ is a 170 hectare farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fifteen hectares are dedicated to managed plantation eucalypts for high grade furniture timber whilst the remainder of the land is maintained as remnant bush land and important indigenous g...rasslands. The Bindi vineyard is the fundamental focus. The vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony. Michael was born in the town of Gisborne (where his family on his mother Kaye’s side have been since 1853) , 55kms north west of Melbourne, and grew up at Bindi on the farm just outside the township. Today he and his family produce chardonnay and pinot from their vineyard at Bindi which Bill and Michael Dhillon established in 1988. Michael served as assistant winemaker to Stuart Anderson from 1991 until 1998 when he assumed full responsibility. Michael learned his craft working with Stuart as well as experiencing vintages in Europe, where he spent time with the Champagne house of Jean Vesselle in Bouzy, with Alain Graillot in Croze-Hermitage and four vintages in Tuscany at Tenuta di Valgiano. During the mid 1990s Michael also worked with John Wade over parts of three vintages when John was establishing Howard Park Winery. Michael’s passion for Burgundy has seen him visit over 100 different domaines over two decades. 11.01.2022 Our new Breast cancer research group has published their first results detailing the role of pregnancy associated plasma protein in aggressive subtype triple-negative #breastcancer. Triple-negative breast cancers account for 10%20% of breast cancers and have been reported to be more aggressive, associated with poorer survival than other subtypes of breast cancers. Notably, the triple-negative subtype of breast cancer is encountered more often in pregnancy and has an aggress...ive clinical course. This is the first work in the field describing the behaviour and function of a pregnancy associated plasma protein that is highly found in aggressive triple-negative breast cancers. High PAPPA concentrations are generally detected in blood of pregnant women. The research sought to understand its functional consequences, and findings revealed that it plays an important role in regulating key cell motility networks in breast cancers. This research has provided evidence that could lead to a potential therapeutic target for the subset of breast cancers with elevated levels of the plasma protein that will improve treatment outcomes for these patients. go.nature.com/3h6hV4g Scientific Reports

09.01.2022 Our team’s work into liver cancer has received further endorsement. FECRI scientists Dr Prashanth Prithviraj and Dr Aparna Jayachandran have published their research on liver cancer entitled ‘Combined inhibition of TGF-1-induced EMT and PD-L1 silencing re-sensitizes hepatocellular carcinoma to Sorafenib treatment’ in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common primary liver malignancy accounting for approximately 80-90% of all liver cancers.... The global burden of HCC is increasing rapidly but treatment options are still limited with increased therapy resistance. Circumventing resistance by exploring and targeting possible molecular mechanisms and pathways contributing to resistance is needed. The current study focuses on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a cellular process which confers HCC tumour cells with the ability to evade the immune system and develop resistance to treatment. The present study is the first to examine the association between cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF)-1-induced EMT, aberrant immune checkpoint expression and resistance in HCC. These findings provide a valuable strategy to potentially improve the clinical efficacy of treatment in HCC patients by utilizing a combinatorial treatment approach. This research was conducted in close collaboration with liver cancer researchers at the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation and the The University of Queensland. 06.01.2022 This month is Breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women with 20,000 new cases diagnosed in Australia each year and second most common cause of cancer related deaths in women with over 3,100 deaths per year. ... This month presents us with an opportunity to focus on the importance of being ‘breast aware’, understanding the risk factors to help detect and treat, and shining a light on important research for the future. Our newly established Breast cancer project needs patient samples for research. Institute partner, Lake Imaging is a crucial part of the process in obtaining samples for research. Breast tissue samples are collected in biopsies, guided by ultrasound at both diagnosis and in treatment. These samples can be only collected from patients have already given consent to donate to research. The process is not an additional procedure and is done using samples collected for pathology. Samples are then stored in liquid nitrogen in the FECRI’s tissue bank to be used later. Only through research, better treatments can be found. 06.01.2022 Some might say the Redman family have wine running through their veins. This fourth generation business has a fascinating history and the benefit of passing knowledge, hard work and passion from generation to the next. It started in 1908, Bill and his family purchased 16 hectares of vineyards in Coonawarra, South Australia. He sold the 1908 vintage grapes to the Riddoch winery to help pay for the block. Bill made his first wine in 1909 in very rudimentary conditions. He sol...d all the wine in bulk to other wine companies. In 1937, Owen Redman joined his father Bill in the family winemaking business. They continued to sell their wine to other wineries, however, the reputation of their wines continued to grow and demand for their wine increased. Skip forward a generation with much dedication and persistence in between. Redman Wines continued to make just two dry reds, Redman Claret (100% Shiraz) and Redman Cabernet Sauvignon, until 1992, when the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot was introduced in limited quantities. Bruce and Winnie Redman’s son Daniel, the fourth generation of the Redman family to make wine in Coonawarra, joined the family business in 2008, exactly 100 years after his great grandfather made his first wine. Dan's younger brother Michael joined the business in 2015. Today, the Redman family continues to grow grapes and make wine in the traditions initiated by Bill Redman 100 years ago, and with the next generation in place, this tradition and family success look certain to continue for years to come. Redman Wines have generously donated many bottles from their collection to our Online Wine Auction. 03.01.2022 Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women with 20,000 new cases diagnosed in Australia each year and the second most common cause of cancer related deaths in women October is Breast cancer awareness month and it presents us with an opportunity to focus on the importance of being ‘breast aware’, understanding the risk factors to help detect, treat, and shining a light on important research for the future. Our Breast cancer project commenced in March of this year..., made possible after seed funding from a private philanthropic donation in late 2019 and this February’s Ballarat Cycle Classic that raised a record $300,000 for the project. This team is investigating the immunology of breast cancer with special reference to high risk triple negative breast cancer. This research aims to determine protein targets on breast cancer cells that may be involved in evading the immune system, by creating a camouflaging fog around these cells. It is hoped that by identifying these proteins, druggable targets can be developed that would lift the fog from these cells and allow the immune system to attack the cancer. This work is currently being undertaken at the Institute with other cancers such as, Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and Ovarian cancer. Triple negative breast cancer accounts for 15% of all breast cancers Since commencing the team already published world first work first relating to aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, which it is hoped, will lead to a potential therapeutic target that will improve treatment.
