25.01.2022 Fire and Rescue NSW recently attended Radiothon 2019 and presented a cheque to the Burns Unit for $101,275. Radiothon is the biggest fundraising event of the year for The Children's Hospital at Westmead and we were honoured to be part of it. As firefighters begin their career with Fire and Rescue NSW, they are given a talk about the long-standing commitment and involvement that FRNSW has with the Burns Unit and the synergy that exists between the role of firefighters to preve...nt, prepare and protect against burns and the work the doctors, nurses and support staff perform to heal and repair the children who are admitted to the Burns Unit. At the end of the talk firefighters are given the option of donating a small amount of their pay each fortnight which is then donated to the Burns Unit. The funds do not go into consolidated revenue or any other part of the hospital, but dedicated solely to the Burns Unit. The $101,275 donation for 2019 is the annual accumulation of funds raised through the payroll deductions from thousands of firefighters, admin and trades staff of Fire and Rescue NSW. Engadine Fire Station, represented in this image by "C" Platoon and led by Station Officer Paul Shapter, is staffed by firefighters Harry Wilcock, Paul Hinze and Chris Allen who have a combined 48 years of fortnightly contributions to the Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. This is one small way to say thank you to those who continue to contribute to the Burns Unit Fund. If you are a firefighter who would like to get involved then please message this page. #firerescuensw #frnsw #westmeadkids #burnsunit #firefighter #charity

22.01.2022 There is currently a delay in answering Triple Zero (000) phone calls. If you have a life threatening emergency, you can stay on the line with a delay of up to 3 minutes or contact your local fire station: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9205

22.01.2022 *** $124, 346 donated to the Burns Unit *** The Fire and Rescue NSW Burns Unit Fund is proud to announce this donation to the 2020 Radiothon held at The Children's Hospital at Westmead this past week. These funds have been donated by Fire and Rescue NSW staff through fortnightly payroll deductions. We pass on our thanks to the 2,700+ employees who contribute, to the payroll staff who assist in the processing of paperwork and the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency Services Academy... for providing access to our new recruits. Talking to our recruits about the amazing work that the Burns Unit provides to the people of New South Wales, Australia and also the Pacific Rim ensures the legacy of the Burns Unit Fund will continue to grow and have a positive impact. For any more information, please contact the Burns Unit Fund through this page or via [email protected] #firefighter #burnsunit #charity

21.01.2022 As a Nurse Practitioner led service, we are able to holistically and comprehensively guide patients and families through the often stressful and daunting phase of acute treatment as they navigate their journey to healing, said Madeleine Jacques. Nurse Practitioner (NP) Madeleine Jacques, on behalf of the Kidsburns Team at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, has been recognised this week as a finalist in the prestigious HESTA Australian Nursing & Midwifery Awards. Nominated in the ‘Team Excellence’ category, Kidsburns is a 24-hour state-wide burns referral and consultation service which provides remote specialised advice and burns management guidance to clinicians anywhere in NSW.

20.01.2022 Had a great day today at Radiothon 2019. More photos to come including the announcement of our cheque presentation, but we couldn't hold back on this one. Assistant Commissioner Paul McGuiggan with Jakodi and Calvin.... They were disappointed we didn't have a fire truck with us. Mr McGuiggan did his best to placate the boys. Thanks for hanging out! #firefighter #burnsunit #radiothon2019 #firerescuensw #westmeadkids #frnsw

20.01.2022 *** Increase in Burns Patients *** While everyone is encouraged to stay home, your safety and wellbeing is the top priority. This doesn't just mean staying safe from COVID-19, it means staying fit and healthy to ensure that our hospitals and medical support networks are available to treat those who need it the most. Victoria is seeing a spike in Burns, likely to be attributed to the increased number of people being home bound. Associate Professor Heather Cleland: "People are ...ending up in intensive care beds with these injuries at a time when those beds are going to become very precious." Specialists at The Alfred hospital have reported a surge in severe burns since Victoria's stage-3 lockdown came into effect last month. Many of the injuries being treated at the hospital's burns unit have been caused by hot oil with others resulting from people cooking while intoxicated. 17.01.2022 Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW not only donate money from their fortnightly pay, a number of them go above and beyond to increase the organisation contributions to the Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The 400in4 Charity Ride has donated $750,000 to the Burns Unit since its inception and continues to do great things. Please support them their endeavours.

16.01.2022 On Friday, we were honoured to represent the near 3,000 Firefighters, administration, and trades staff of Fire and Rescue NSW who contribute fortnightly deductions from their pay which makes up this total sum presented. $101,275 dollars is an amazing achievement and builds on a longstanding relationship with the Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The cheque was presented to Sally Whalen. Sally is the director of nursing Midwifery and Education for the Sydney ...Children's Hospital Network and has a deep commitment to enabling people to deliver safe, quality care and improve the experience for patients and their families We also recognise the foresight and wisdom of the founding members of The New South Wales Fire Brigades Royal Alexandra Hospital For Children Burns Unit Fund committee back in 1984 who leave an amazing legacy which continues to improve patient outcomes for the children who attend the Burns unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. None of this is possible without the ongoing donation from firefighters, admin and trades staff. The Children's Hospital at Westmead admits approximately 200 - 220 children with burns injuries each year, ranging from birth to 16 years from all over NSW. The majority of burns patients admitted are aged between one and four years. The unit delivers acute burns care, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation and burns prevention, education and advocacy initiatives. We thank Kerry Bolwell (Nursing Unit Manager of the Burns Unit) for her time and continued support and for the tour of the facilities. And also Michal, Jeena and the Sponsorships Team for all their efforts. We were fortunate enough to run into Madeleine Jacques and other amazing people who our donations once funded but who are now in dedicated and funded positions. If you're an employee with Fire and Rescue NSW and want know more about getting involved, please message us through this page. #radiothon2019 #burnsunit #firefighter #firerescuensw #frnsw #westmeadkids

16.01.2022 The Institution of Fire Engineers has shared a report focusing on how the efforts of Fire and Rescue Services can improve quality of life outcomes for Burns Survivors. We will be reading through this and would love to hear from our champions at The Children's Hospital at Westmead Burns Unit on the merits contained within the report and anything else they think Fire Fighters can do. "The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. ...The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself. C. JoyBell C. #burnsunit #firerescuensw #frnsw #firefighter #charity #westmeadkids

14.01.2022 Today the NSW Fire Brigades Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children Burns Unit Fund visited the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency Services Academy to talk to Fire and Rescue NSW Recruit Firefighters about workplace giving for the Kids Burns Unit now located at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Founded in 1983, the Burns Unit Fund is run by firefighters who oversee the fortnightly pay deductions from Fire and Rescue NSW employees and promote the goodwill that the Burns Unit Fund ...provides to the patients and families of the Burns Unit. We were overwhelmed with the generosity shown today by the recruits with 31 members signing up which will yield an annual donation of over $4,000. As a small sign of our gratitude, each firefighter who signed up was gifted a Bandage Bear pin. THANK YOU! If you are a FRNSW firefighter who would like to participate in this workplace giving or wish to review your current deduction, please contact us through this page or email us at [email protected]

11.01.2022 Despite all the fires, Fire and Rescue NSW are still campaigning to raise money for Clubbe Ward/Burns Unit. This festive season, Fire and Rescue NSW are joining the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and asking employees to join with the Australian corporate community and Donate Your Hourly Rate and light up Christmas for Sick Kids. When you Donate Your Hourly Rate you are a part of a growing movement. Spearheaded by Sydney Children...'s Hospitals Foundation, together we will light up the lives of sick kids in Hospital when they need it most - Christmas. For them the greatest gift is the very best care, so our campaign aims to light the way for children's healthcare by raising funds for state-of the-art equipment, ground-breaking research and the best and brightest practitioners. To maintain your privacy, the website will highlight the total amount of hours donated, rather than individual contributions so you can either donate your hourly rate or an amount of your choosing. 08.01.2022 An offer of support from the RAW Mind Coach Team. The recent bushfires across Australia have made it an extremely challenging time for many. As our way of offering support, we are making freely available a range of guided mindfulness exercises to all emergency service personnel, their family members and others affected by the fires. These exercises may assist to relieve stress, promote deep relaxation and enhance sleep. To listen to or download these tracks, please visit www....rawmindcoach.com/bushfire-support. Four of the guided mindfulness exercises are part of the RAW Mind Coach program developed by Dr Sadhbh Joyce, which is currently available to all members of Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance. Three tracks have been generously provided by Dr Richard Miller of the Integrative Restoration Institute (IRI). Further information about the iRest Institute and its programs is available at www.irest.org. To further assist emergency services personnel, we are also currently preparing a special edition of our newsletter. In it we will profile a number of first responders who have worked through the disaster and uncover the strategies they are using for self-care and recovery. We would like to thank all those who have contributed generously to fire-affected communities across Australia. We hope these practises may serve to support and replenish you in the coming months. We also encourage you to share this link with other members of your community who may find it of benefit. Please visit www.rawmindcoach.com/bushfire-support. If you feel you could benefit from additional support at this time, first responders may wish to contact a peer supporter, chaplain or their employee assistance program. Members of the public may wish to check in with their GP or for crisis support contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. Remember, reaching out for support is always an act of resilience. 06.01.2022 If you visit any Fire and Rescue NSW fire station, you’d expect to see firefighters, big fire trucks and rows of boots and helmets. At FRNSW Station No 2, however, you’ll encounter doctors, nurses, stethoscopes and brightly coloured murals.... FRNSW No 2 Station is actually the Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, the official FRNSW charity. George Street West was the original No 2 Station. When it closed in the 1950s, the number was not re-allocated to another NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) Station. In 1995 the then NSWFB Commissioner, Ian MacDougall, decreed that the Burns Unit at Westmead Children’s Hospital would become an official NSWFB Station and bestowed it with the title of Station No 2. Although members of Station No 2 don’t wear firefighting gear, they do wear FRNSW T-shirts. FRNSW employees have been donating to the Burns Unit since 1985 when it was situated in the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children at Camperdown. In fact, the Burns Unit Fund is still known as the NSW Fire Brigades Royal Alexandra Hospital For Children Burns Unit Fund. Through payroll deductions, community fundraising activities, and donations, FRNSW staff have donated more than $2 million to the Burns Unit.

02.01.2022 Skin supply shortage!!! It's a real thing, and the tragedy in New Zealand has brought it to the fore. The reality is that even in the day-to-day cases, like the house fires, the car fires, the exploding paint tins ... these are generating cases that are requiring skin and we struggling to even supply that, - Dr Stefan Poniatowski.... (Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria) While there has been some amazing gestures of people offering to donate their skin, "Donations must come from a corpse, not from someone alive, not even close family members who might be willing to risk the pain and damage." If you do wish to help in the future, and we certainly wish you a long and healthy life, consider registering your decision with the Australian Organ Donor Register. You can do this online, but: * must be aged 16 years or older. * need to submit your personal details, and. * need to submit your Medicare card number. Head here to register your decision and make sure your loved ones and next of kin are aware of your decision and wishes: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/tran/register-be-organ-donor Our thoughts are with all of the people affected by this tragic circumstance!
