24.01.2022 Crews were called to an MVA at 6pm on Thursday night approximately 30km west of Broken Hill. 23.01.2022 It’s been a busy couple of days for members of Broken Hill Fire Station. Started off by conducting Road Crash Rescue training to keep our rescue skills sharp. The crew practiced different options for stabilizing a car that has come to rest on its side. They then went through various options of removing the roof from the car whilst still on its side, this gives the best access to the patients trapped inside the vehicle by all emergency services. We then went through a several ...options for removing doors and lifting the dash up off front seat occupants. The crews were hard at training today, this time practicing some of our pumping evolutions. These drills keep Firefighters skills up to date and allow them to be prepared for any incident. We were then turned out to a building fire at Broken Hill High School. Quick actions by Firefighters from Broken Hill and Broken Hill South stations plus the efforts of the teachers and staff at BH High prevented the fire from getting worse, containing it to where it started plus prevented any injuries. 16.01.2022 Now is the time to change your Smoke Alarm battery and to check it is in date and good working order.

15.01.2022 Firefighters from 238 Station - Broken Hill, were busy again today refining their rescue skills. Today’s focus was on Road Crash Rescue. This session required the Firefighters to stabilize a vehicle that had come to rest on its side. We stabilize the car so that its safe for the people who are inside the car by stopping any unwanted movement, plus it makes it safe for personnel working on the scene. The crew then used a combination of hydraulic & battery operated hydraulic ...tools to cut the roof off the car which creates a lot of space to access any of the vehicles occupants. The crew then went through a range of different extrication techniques to remove the doors and lift the dash. Once again, we’d like to acknowledge the assistance of the team from Brooks Metals for their continued support by providing cars for us to cut up. This type of continued practice is invaluable for Firefighters to prepare them for any incident they may be called to. See more

13.01.2022 SOLAR PANEL FIRES | We are urging residents with solar panels to remain aware and vigilant after an influx in solar panel fires this year. This footage was obta...ined from a neighbour in Glenwood who called Triple Zero (000) after noticing a house nearby had solar panels alight. This was one of six solar panel fires that Fire and Rescue NSW attended in the past week alone. These statistics show solar panel fires are up 20 percent compared to last year and continuing to rise. Isolation switches appear to be causing almost half of solar panel fires, so it is vital to ensure solar panels are installed and regularly maintained by a professional and that systems comply with Australian Standards. Always do a licence check with NSW Fair Trading before any installation and wiring takes place. This can be found at https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au//during-th/solar-panels. #MoreThanFire #ProtectTheIrreplaceable #PreparedForAnything

08.01.2022 Today has seen our Firefighters up at Joe Keenan Lookout practicing some of their vertical rescue skills. Today’s drill was focused on building a span line. Span lines are used as options to transport people or equipment using a rope system. Whilst span lines are not used often by rescue crews, there are a lot of separate steps needed to build one properly. Each of these steps helps our Firefighters consolidate their rescue training and helps us prepare for incidents we may face.

03.01.2022 The residents of a property in Cummins Street were surprised when their smoke detector went off on Sunday night. They were shocked to see that their mattress and bed were alight with thick hot smoke rising to the ceiling. The smoke was hot enough to melt the air conditioning ducts at the opposite end of the bedroom. The residents took quick action to extinguish the fire and remove the mattress outside. Firefighters were called to check the scene and ensure that the fire ha...d not extended into the walls, ducts or ceiling space. Firefighters praised the quick actions of the residents who said that if they hadn’t been alerted by the smoke detector going off the fire would have been much worse. It has been determined that wiring in an electric blanket was the cause of the incident. We encourage everyone who uses electric blankets to inspect them regularly for any frayed or damaged wires. This incident is a handy reminder that only working smoke alarms save lives. Have you checked yours recently? See more
