10.01.2022 The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) says Western Australians are among the worst in the country when it comes to installing and replacing smoke alarms. Each year, FESA runs an April 1 campaign to remind people to check their homes are covered by working alarms. While rental properties and newly-built homes are legally required to have smoke alarms installed, many older homes are still without them.... On average, five people are killed in house fires in WA each year. John Haddon, from FESA's fire investigation and analysis unit, says many of those lives could have been saved with properly installed alarms. "About 90 per cent of our homes are covered, so there's still about 10 per cent that aren't and that's probably one of the worst statistics in the country," he said. "Even when it comes to changing smoke alarm batteries, only about three-quarters of homeowners change their batteries annually and that's a big problem as well." Mr Haddon says it is heartbreaking to see deaths occur that are preventable. "The smoke alarms probably daily alert people to a developing fire and unfortunately fatalities happen as well when people don't have the smoke alarms there that could have saved their lives," he said. https://www.abc.net.au//fesa-alarmed-over-smoke-de/3923180
