12.01.2022 There is always someone working at Fire and Rescue NSW. When our firefighters have worked hard extinguishing a fire and rendering an area safe, our Fire Investi...gations and Research Unit (FIRU) along with our K9's take over. Just after the devastating fire that ripped through the small town of Mungindi, destroying the butcher shop, a clothing store and the town’s only supermarket, our two specialist investigation teams drove into town to help establish the cause. Our FIRU and K9 teams joined a multi-agency response to investigate the site thoroughly, before handing it over to the insurance companies. The significant nature of the blaze and the remoteness of the town added to the urgency of the task, helping get the town back on its feet, fast. With the assistance of Gandalf (Accelerant Detection Canine), who helps to identify any possible liquid accelerants, and, an overhead drone gives a bird's eye view, giving investigators the whole picture. FIRU concluded there was nothing suspicious found at the site and the exact origin could not be established. Firefighters from Narrabri and Moree travelled to the site to assist the teams. The efficiency and the efforts made by the entire crew will help the small Northern town of Mungindi, get back on its feet quicker. #preparedforanything #fireandrescuensw #fireinvestigation #mungindifire Photo's courtesy of the Fire Investigation and Research Unit and Narrabri Fire Station.

10.01.2022 FRNSW, NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service are undertaking a number of planned hazard reduction burns today around the Greater Sy...dney Region. These are important controlled burns which will reduce the risk to people and properties from bush fires. Taking advantage of optimal weather conditions, planned burns will be conducted in the following areas: - Huskisson and Narrawallee, Shoalhaven Region - Horsely, Wollongong - St Helens Park, Campbelltown - Barden Ridge, Sutherland Shire - Katoomba, The Blue Mountains - Glenorie, Maraylya and Lower Portland, The Hills Shire - Smiths Lake, Mid North Coast With the volume of hazard reduction burns being undertaken today, it is possible smoke will settle across the Greater Sydney Area, however, a southerly change and rain on Wednesday will begin to clear the smoke. NSW Health reminds people that children, older adults and people with heart and lung conditions are most susceptible to the effects of air pollution and excessive smoke. Residents in impacted areas are advised to take the following precautions: - Ensure windows and doors are closed to help prevent smoke entering their homes. - Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns. - Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage. - Remove washing from clotheslines. - Ensure pets have a protected area. - Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on. - Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety. - People with asthma or lung conditions are advised to reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice. If you spot a fire that is unattended, please call Triple Zero (000). #PreparedForAnything #FRNSW

04.01.2022 Have a look at this behind-the-scenes video showcasing how the Emergency Services Academy facilitates strike team deployment.

04.01.2022 The Bureau has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific, with climate models suggesting it's likely to remain until at least the end of 2020.... La Niña typically brings: A wetter-than-average spring and summer to northern and eastern Australia; Cooler-than-average days and warmer-than-average nights; Increased tropical cyclone numbers; An earlier start to the monsoon and wet season; Average fire risk; and Less intense but more prolonged heatwaves across southern Australia. But every La Niña event is different. Once La Niña develops it usually finishes the following autumn, but some events have lasted 2 or 3 years. Rainfall can also vary considerably. During the last big event of 2010-2012 rainfall was above average across most of Australia (we saw Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi devastate far north Queensland communities during this period), whereas rainfall during the La Niña event of 2008-2009 was much more patchy.
