10.01.2022 Fire safety breach sparks second fine for Gold Coast building occupier. Is your building compliant? Less than a year after being convicted of breaching fire safety regulations, the occupier of a Gold Coast residential and commercial building has again fronted court and been fined $30,000 with a conviction recorded for failing to maintain and removing fire doors. The building occupier was previously fined $30,000 with a conviction recorded in March 2017 for 25 charges includin...g illegally disabling fire alarms and blocking fire doors. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Manager of Compliance and Prosecution Mark Halverson said the offences were identified by QFES officers during several follow-up inspections. While the occupier had rectified the fire detection system faults following the first conviction, they failed to ensure fire doors were operable, and some fire doors had been completely removed, Mr Halverson said. QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said QFES would not hesitate to take legal action if building occupiers and owners did not comply with fire safety laws. Today’s outcome is a clear message that QFES is committed to protecting and preserving the safety of Queenslanders, and those who are knowingly and deliberately breaking the law will be found and prosecuted, Ms Carroll said. QFES will continue to work to detect fire safety offences across the State and prosecute those who fail to comply with the law. Source - State of Queensland.
