25.01.2022 Firecraft are humbled this week working on the door step of Mount Lewis National Park. We are helping to keep weeds at bay from one of FNQs most valuable natural assets. Mount Lewis NP has incredible biodiversity including: one of the worlds oldest flowering plants (Austrobaileya scandens), 2 metre long blue earthworms, the Golden Bowerbird (smallest with the biggest bower), Blue-faced parrot finch, and a high representation of forest litter dwelling frogs found only in the Wet Tropics.

25.01.2022 Take this opportunity to participate and contribute to a great event.

23.01.2022 Sometimes the resilience of animals surprises you. Would you expect frogs and reptiles to be abundant in this apparent dry, industrial landscape? This guy is the largest specimen weve ever seen of a Tommy Roundhead (Diporiphor australis).

22.01.2022 The Mount Carbine Tableland open forest has been transformed in the past few weeks from a dry parched landscape to a picture of lush new growth after all the monsoonal rain. Species such as the perennial Native Rosella (Abelmoschus moschatus subsp. tuberosus) lies dormant in the dry season and then emerges from its tuber during the wet season. The bush-tucker plant only flowers for a day. This paddock near Mount Molloy has been subjected to a hot late-season fire that has removed the weedy understory and now is a canvas of iridescent green new growth with splashes of the Rosellas watermelon-pink hibiscus flowers.

21.01.2022 Is your building site in a Bushfire Prone Area? Do you need your Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating reassessed for AS 3959:2018 construction requirements and approvals? Firecraft Environmental can assist with property assessments, reporting and mapping of low risk vegetation for builders, renovators, architects, and property owners.

20.01.2022 Thank you to the SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium, and all the presenters for another fantastic fire forum in Brisbane.

20.01.2022 This past week Firecraft have been monitoring the Panguna Ridge wildfire north of Cairns. Check out our website and latest news page at www.firecraft.com.au for details on the link between fire behaviour and fuel type.

19.01.2022 This is the Carpentarian Grasswren, now endangered from hot late season wildfire destroying its habitat. This month we have been helping out in Central West QLD to plan for the 2020 controlled burn program. Our plans include patchy low intensity burns that leave a complex mixture of old and new spinifex intact, essential for Grasswren survival. These burns aim to prevent hot spring season fires that would consume large areas of critical habitat in one wildfire event.

19.01.2022 Firecraft crews continue to wage our war on weeds along the Mulligan and Rex Highways and the Burke Development Rd. over April and Easter. Road users - PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE while we undertake this important environmental service of keeping Giant Rats Tail grass (Sporobolus pyramidalis) and Navua sedge (Cyperus aromaticus) off our roadsides. Along with rail corridors and river systems, our roadsides are our biggest wicks for transportation of weed reproductive material (such a...s seeds). Giant Rats Tail grass (GRT) can infest properties such as the one shown below, reducing pasture productivity and diminishing ecological values and services in natural habitats. GRT seeds can remain viable in soil for up to 10 years! Navua sedge is found in most backyards in FNQ. However, it can be devastating for our farmers and bush - like GRT it is not palatable for cattle and out-competes native grass, rushes, forbs, herbs and sedges. Everyone has a general biosecurity obligation under the Biosecurity Act 2014 QLD - Remember to wash your vehicle before leaving camping and hunting grounds, wash machinery after slashing. Do not collect/transport plants, seeds and flowers that you cannot identify, from one area to another.

18.01.2022 Building a new home? Call us today for your Bushfire Hazard Assessment. Here is what one of our clients has to say: "We contacted Jackie from Firecraft when our local council planning department informed us that a Bushfire Risk Hazard Overlay was holding our Building Application back. Jackie was extremely efficient, professional and a pleasure to work with. Jackie found a major discrepancy in the overlay map and what was actually present on site, as a result of this assessment and Jackie’s correspondence with council we have been permitted to build where we originally planned with a low fire risk which has saved us thousands of dollars in additional soil testing, septic design and Engineers fees. Thank you Jackie it has been a pleasure". Kelly Saunders , Murray Upper NQ

17.01.2022 Firecraft wraps-up another successful project, and we couldnt have done it without our amazing crew: Tayla, Clayton, Mark and Casey. The Central West fully tested you in your time there, including the biggest rainfall in years, soaring temperatures, swarming flies, strong winds, and no doubt you all went home with embedded Spinifex souveniers. Big thanks to you all!!

17.01.2022 Great conditions for cool mosaic burning in FNQ yesterday

16.01.2022 I recently had a question posed to me If we accept foreign people into the country in every State, why is it a problem letting foreign plants in? I found this question really surprising at first..then it occurred to me that perhaps the extent of our weed problem and the importance of protecting Australia may be unnoticed. Weeds or invasive plants are arguably one of our biggest threats to our ecosystems and biodiversity, and also to farming. Prohibiting the introduction... of plants and the effort that goes into prevention of spread and eradication of weeds is an annual multi-billion-dollar effort. Take Rubbervine (Cryptostegia grandiflora) for a North Qld and Cape York example. Introduced in 1875 from Madagascar as an ornamental plant for mining camps due to its adaptation to harsh conditions, lush foliage and pretty flowers, it is now a Weed of National Significance (DAF, 2019). Considered one of the worst weeds in the country it is toxic to cattle, takes over our riparian vegetation along our river systems, and degrades important habitat needed for wildlife survival. This infestation being managed by Firecraft is on the Desailly Range south of the road to Cooktown. The Rubbervine is estimated at 25m high in places, blanketing and killing native trees and shrubs, and creeping its way rapidly up to the road.

11.01.2022 Bushfire Hazard Assessment for Dawsons Group of Companies - Another Firecraft consulting project successfully completed. Thank you Dawsons Engineering for giving us the opportunity to be part of the team to ensuring your development can proceed. Heres what Dawsons has to say about us................................. "Dawsons Engineering engaged Firecraft Environmental who were extremely professional and provided prompt service with positive outcomes to achieve pre-design ...approvals from council and governing bodies. This has enabled us to successfully tick boxes for our proposed development. Without this service we would not have been able to meet the requirements for our development and thus abandoning the project completely. We contacted Jackie from Firecraft Environmental requesting a Site Specific Bushfire Hazard Report and supporting documentation outlining her extensive experience and qualifications in this extreme niche field of expertise. Firecraft delivered promptly with supplying us with quality reporting and documenting of all bushfire related issues which were earmarked to be addressed. We feel the report Jackie provided was through indicating a complete understanding of Bushfire Prone Area maps, regional ecosystem vegetation, they provided advice on the potential bushfire intensity and potential impact buffer consequently Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings. Firecraft were engaged with a fast turnaround supplying us with surveying and our report within the week which enabled us to keep our design process moving. Dawson Engineering highly recommends Firecraft Environmental for all project of this nature and would not hesitate in engaging them for all future works."

10.01.2022 Some of the Central West QLD locals that came out to play with the floods. Mains frogs (Cyclorana maini) are a burrowing frog that only emerge for explosive episodes of breeding after cyclonic weather and then go underground again.

10.01.2022 This image encapsulates the devastating impacts of poor machinery and vehicle hygiene on a property. A slasher contaminated with the weed Giant Rats Tail seed from slashing other infested paddocks and not washing down, has with one slash width along the right hand side of this fence line, created a significant infestation amongst the cattle pasture Brachiaria sp. 18 months later and 2 x wet seasons the results speak for themselves. You can see the weed dominating the fenceline and also starting to establish further into the paddock centre photo. A weed washdown bay can be as simple as a bunded gravel pit. Call us for a weed audit and assessment now.

07.01.2022 Is the bowerbird a seasoned fire manager? This Great Bowerbird (Chlamydera nuchalis) bower scattered with snail shells, gravel, and various colourful treasures was admired by Firecraft Crew in the Mt. Garnet area this week. Bowerbirds have always been recognised for their construction abilities, pedantic arrangement of bowers, and particular adornments they choose to scatter around the cleared area of the bower to attract females.... But is the cleared area only to make the bower standout?? Some researchers believe it may be an adaptation to fire prone environments by deliberately clearing a firebreak around their bower to protect it from wildfire.... 07.01.2022 Landslides - disaster or renewal? Firecraft were left in awe this week and totally humbled by the stark contrast of the ancient forest greenery against the scar on Thornton Peak from the slump landslide. A major geological event that occurred in the Daintree rainforest in July 2018 after significant rainfall. Some may consider it an environmental disaster having an impact on our oldest rainforest or does it have important ecological function similar to a volcano?? ... It certainly sparks thoughts of what will grow there and inhabit it in our lifetime before it develops its pre-landslide complexity long into the future again.
