24.01.2022 The personal toll of occupational cancer for firefighters and their families cannot be exaggerated... here is a personal story from a firefighter in Victoria, Australia. 23.01.2022 The Ontario Government has announced extending the presumptive list of occupational cancers for firefighters to 14 which is consistent with Manitoba and Alberta presumptive legislation. The Australian Federal presumptive legislation, and the Tasmanian, South Australian and Western Australian has 12 of the 14 cancers with skin cancer and lung cancer currently not provided. A recent Government review of the Australian Federal legislation has recommended that lung cancer for non-smokers be included. http://www.thespec.com//4493143-ontario-increases-cancer-/

19.01.2022 The Northern Territory Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act has been reviewed and the final report recommends presumptive legislation to recognise occupational cancer for firefighters in the Northern Territory. The basis for the recommendation was in reference to the presumptive legislation enacted for Federal firefighters in the ACT and Aviation, and presumptive legislation covering Tasmanian, Western Australian and South Australian firefighters. http://www.worksafe.nt.gov.au//report_for_nt_workers_compe

18.01.2022 Flame retardants are used in many household products and furnishings - ironically flame retardants are to reduce the spread of fire but the reality is they kill firefighters as firefighters absorb the toxins when fighting the fire resulting in occupational cancer. Here is the latest from the States. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com//are-flame-retardants-causi/

17.01.2022 And once again the link between firefighting and cancer has been reaffirmed... new study http://www.ffcancer.org/mobile/index.cfm

17.01.2022 KEY FINDINGS OF THE MONASH UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIAN FIREFIGHTERS HEALTH STUDY INCLUDE.... The overall the cancer incidence for career firefighters was significantly raised compared to the Australian general population. The Monash Study findings for male career firefighters included:... Statistically significant increase in prostate cancer Significant increased risk of melanoma for firefighters with more than 10 years employment, with a significant increase in risk for Victorian, NSW and WA firefighters Significantly higher risk of kidney cancer for firefighters with more than 20 years employment Elevated risk of kidney cancer for firefighters 10-20 years employment Significantly elevated risk of lympho-haematopoetic cancers for firefighters more than 10 years employment A significantly higher incidence of mesothelioma in firefighters employed for more than 10 years. As the latency period for mesothelioma is 30-40 years it is expected that the rate will increase in the next 10-20 years. High attendance at fires is directly linked to increased risk of circulatory-caused death Suicide elevated for firefighters who completed employment by 1985. Male breast cancer elevated for firefighters more than 20 years employment More cases of testicular cancer than were expected The incidence of stomach cancer was significantly raised for firefighters who had worked before 1985 Got to http://www.coeh.monash.org/downloads/finalreport2014.pdf

16.01.2022 Here is another great article on the NIOSH study released last year which confirmed the key studies the Australian Senate relied upon when passing the federal presumptive legislation. This article also makes the point that presumptive legislation has been achieved in the US and Canada (and now Australia) through the tenacity and commitment of the firefighters' unions. These campaigns are hard fought but the recognition of occupational cancer in work cover and compensation schemes is likely the most important legacy for firefighters of the future. http://nwlaborpress.org//firefighters-fighting-cancer-as-/

15.01.2022 The Age in Victoria today exooses the grim reality of PTSD and occupational cancer for firefighters... go online and see video footage of firefighters telling their stories... please distribute widely - firefighters in Victoria, Queensland and NSW are still being denied presumptive legislation to recognise occupational cancer.

13.01.2022 The fight for justice for firefighters extends beyond occupational cancer. In Alberta Canada psychological trauma such as Post Traumtic Stress Disorder (PSTD) has been included. The IAFF are also campaigning to have infectious diseases recognised as an occupational disease for firefighters through presumptive legislation. http://www.businessinsurance.com//201406/NEWS06/306089986|62|338|302|342|304|92

05.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: Thursday November 6 2014 FIREFIGHTERS CAUTIOUS ON PRESUMPTIVE Firefighters say they cautiously welcome a Coalition announcement to introduce legi...slation to support firefighters with work-related cancer. Presumptive legislation reverses the onus of proof, and assumes that firefighters who contract a range of 12 cancers after years of service are victims of occupational exposure. United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall says he is yet to see the detail on the Coalition's plan. "It is a surprising turnaround after the Liberals voted down a Greens bid to implement similar legislation last year. "At that time they refused to follow Canberra, Tasmania, SA and WA because they wanted more evidence. "That claim came despite long-term international studies on the health of more than 120,000 firefighters, and despite calls by Monash University researchers not to delay presumptive legislation. "The Monash researchers insisted last year that the science was already proven but the government wouldn't listen, placing intolerarable strain on the families of ill firefighters. "And we remain wary of the Napthine Government when, on the eve of the legislaiton being introduced last year, they announced assessment panels for firefighters with work-related cancers. "These have been a complete failure and have blocked fireighters getting support at a critical stage of their life, as they face life-threatening illness." 05.01.2022 The Npathine-Wells Government in Victoria has no genuine intention to protect the protectors... their recent announcement to provide some unspecified assistance has now been fully exposed as an election vote-buying sham. The Napthine-Wells Government spent the last two years putting every obstacle in the path of presumptive legislation for Victorian firefighters with occupational cancer and even voted it down twice! The Greens' Bill included provisions to protect Volunteers! http://www.theage.com.au//firefighter-cancer-advice-ignore

04.01.2022 The research is compelling and the anecdotal evidence keeps coming... firefighters are at a far greater risk of contracting cancers than the general public because they absorb the toxins and carcinogens through their skin - protect the protectors - campaign to have your state legislate to presume specific cancers are occupational cancers for firefighters so that they can access medical treatment and compensation as they can for any other work-related injury or illness. http://www.10tv.com//columbus-increasing-cancer-rates-in-f
