20.01.2022 Did you know that you can have the beautiful letterhead design you've always wanted but saved as a Word template? Oh, the possibilities! #Letterhead #DesignIdeas

20.01.2022 It's so nice to know that you've not only nailed the brief but exceeded a client's expectations. "Caryn took the time to understand me, my business and my vision. She asked my likes and dislikes, preferences and inspiration. She turned my ideas into reality and breathed life into them in a way that I could never have imagined. I finally feel that my logo and branding represents me and I am proud to share it moving forward. I would recommend Caryn in a heartbeat and look forward to working with her again in the future for any of my design needs." - Diandra Jones, The Admin Mama. It was an absolute pleasure creating this for you, Diandra! I look forward to working with you in the future.

20.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day and we all know that today is signified by red poppies and, especially in Australia, a sprig of Rosemary. Why Rosemary? Rosemary is recognised as a sign of remembrance and loyalty and as it grows wild on the Gallipoli peninsula it serves as another reminder of the ANZAC troops that lost their lives there. Poppies and Rosemary are known by most but do you know about The Unknown Soldier? The Unknown Soldier is intended to represent all men (and women I'...m sure) killed during war, especially those with no known resting place. The original Unknown Soldier was entombed at Westminster Abbey in London on Remembrance Day 1920. On the same day, France entombed an Unknown Soldier below the Arc de Triomphe. Last week my son and I went on a Virtual Tour of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and some time was spent at our own tomb of The Unknown Soldier. It was not until Remembrance Day 1993 that he was laid to rest in the Hall of Memory. At his side was a bayonet and a golden sprig of wattle. The soldier was buried in a coffin made from Tasmanian Blackwood which was scattered with soil from the French battlefield, Pozières. #remembranceday #lestweforget #ANZACspirit

18.01.2022 10. CONSIDER CAREFULLY WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR TEXT White text over a white background, black text over a dark background, pretty much any colour text over a very busy background ... pay close attention to whether or not your text is going to be readable. If I can't read the text in a graphic, the image would have to be really, really good (or of a puppy, kitten or kid ... the goat kind!) to grab my attention, I'm going to keep scrolling.... Well, this is the second last piece of the puzzle! That doesn't mean that I won't continue to share design tips with those that need to DIY though. If you're designing your own graphics bringing consistency into your branding might be something you also need to consider. 17.01.2022 Back in the 80's when I was in primary school I have quite a vivid memory of working so incredibly hard on a cover page for an assignment on Venuzuela. I had done so much work on the flag, practically killed my textas in the process, only to realise when I was part way through the countries name that was going across the top that I hadn't left enough room for the "L A" at the end! It was incredibly poor planning on my part but I was maybe 11 years old and didn't have the l...uxury of working on a computer (they were carted in to our classroom on a trolley back then and there was one to share amongst all of the classes!) There is no reason to have a broken heading when working digitally. (Oh how I wish I had a computer back then!) Either reduce the font size, or choose words with less characters if possible. #80schildhoodmemories #brokenheadings #poorplanningonmypart

17.01.2022 I wanted to share a piece of exciting news with you! ... Marianne, from Thrive Admin Services has created a brand new group to share tips and knowledge about Word and documents! There's probably nothing about working with Microsoft Word that Marianne doesn't know, she's amazing! (Plus she has two dogs that look very similar to one of mine so she's practically family, right? ) So if you'd like to belong to a group where you can learn more about working with Word to make y...our life more than a little easier head on over and join! #DoYourselfAFavour https://www.facebook.com/groups/documentdynamos/

17.01.2022 I recently attended a webinar hosted by the always amazing, Rosie Shilo of Virtually Yours and something she said really stuck out to me ... "Invest in yourself and your business." Are you investing in yourself and your business? If you don't, who will? Something to think about. If you're already investing in your business I'd love to hear how! I attend webinars, go to workshops, receive coaching and are constantly looking to improve my skills and knowledge. I also outso...urce to other virtual assistants on occasion. If I don't do this for myself and my business no one else is going to, right? Note: For those that don't know, Rosie is the founder of the Virtually Yours Network which is a network of Contractors / Virtual Assistants who are specialists in a huge variety of services, from bookkeeping to design (that's me! ), copywriting to reception, admin and social media and much more. #InvestInYourself #InvestInYourBusiness

16.01.2022 I recently created a logo for Kim from the brand new Heal the Spirit QLD. Kim will be providing a service to holistically help animals and their families overcome grief and trauma in all forms. Using a holistic approach to mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing she will be offering many modalities to allow pets, and their human companions, to release the pain of grief and trauma that’s stopping them from living their best life. If you're in the vicinity of Toowoomba... and Darling Downs she looks forward to offering her services to your much-loved pets. If you’re not sure how she can help, or want to discuss your situation, please contact her. (Right now you can only find her on Facebook.) Her logo was created with versions suitable for print and web as well as social media. There's also a reverse and monotone version! All in all there's a logo suitable for just about anything. I also provided her with some secondary colours that she can use alongside Rebecca Purple and Queen Blue when needed. #PetHealing #PetHealingTherapy #PetsOfToowoomba

15.01.2022 I love, love, love designing documents and brochures! What can I say? It just makes me happy. When I take on a new project here are some things that I like to consider ... Am I making good use of white space? Have I used simple, contrasting colours? Have I selected from a minimal range of fonts?... Is there consistency from page to page with a multi-page document, magazine etc.? Have I broken up long paragraphs and complex information? Have I used appealing graphics or images? These flyers with matching social media graphics (not pictured) for Mandurah Scouts needed to be able to be printed on a home printer so colour was kept to a minimum where possible and the design was brought in from the edge but there's still enough to make it interesting. #BrochureDesign #SocialMediaGraphics

15.01.2022 In honour of Star Wars Day, May the 4th ... "Your focus determines your reality" - Qui-Gon Jinn, The Phantom Menace I really love this quote ... ever have a really bad day, week, year and you can rattle off all of the bad things that happened in that time? July / August used to be that for me every year and believe me, I had a list! But, when I took a step back and really looked at everything that happened during those two months, for what felt like decades in a row when it... was only a few years, some really good things happened too. I was so focussed on the bad things that they had become the reality. Hmmmm ....

14.01.2022 When creating a document or graphic always consider the background colour and how the colour you choose for your text contrasts with it. Not only does it look better it's also easier to read for those that may be visually impaired eg. colour blindness. (My husband is mildly colour blind so I often run things by him if I'm not sure. ... Hands up if your significant other also has selective hearing! ) Did you know that there is such a thing as a "Luminosity Colour Contrast R...atio Analyser"? The hex codes (6 digit colour code) of the background and text colours are entered in and then you're given a result with a rating. White on teal text is regarded as "AA" rated as long as the text size is above a certain font size. Note: Contrast is the difference between the lightest colour (e.g. the background), and the darkest colour (e.g. the text). #DocumentDesign #DocumentDesigner #DocumentDesignMandurah #DocumentDesignerMandurah #ILoveDesigningDocuments #GraphicDesignerMandurah #GraphicDesignMandurah #GraphicDesignPeelRegion #FreelanceGraphicDesigner #ColourContrast #LaptopAndLatteLadies

14.01.2022 It's so nice to know when one of my clients is happy with my work. "I've never been more delighted with a graphic designer before. Caryn just 'gets it' and perfectly interprets our logo design briefs for our clients each and every time. Highly recommend!" ~ Karen Ahl, Web-Sta Web Design + eMarketing Thanks, Karen, for that lovely review. I look forward to working with you in the future. ... #5StarReview

13.01.2022 Firefly Graphics is more than just one person, it's bigger than just me. Not only do I work with a team of awesome women who run their own businesses in different fields to me, I also have a terrific team under my very own roof! They make me laugh, inspire me and are great company. Introducing ... Charlotte! (AKA Princess Charlotte) Charlotte is quite the Fashionista! Don't you agree? Here you see her modelling her rock candy pjs from Houndtees and they keep her nice and wa...rm in winter while also providing some 'eye candy' for the boy dogs in the neighbourhood. (She's taken though boys, she only has eyes for Doug the Dingo.) Being a Greyhound, Charlotte is far more interested in sleeping and looking pretty than anything else but she's wonderful company and her zoomies are highly entertaining. Charlotte believes though that just by being in her presence I'm a better designer, as she's so incredibly inspiring and considers herself to be my 'muse'. (Shhhhh ... don't spoil it for her!) My family are huge supporters of the work that Greyhound Adoptions WA do and we fostered a few dogs before Charlotte became a Foster Fail.

13.01.2022 It's such a great feeling when a client is happy with your work ... "I recently used Firefly to assist me in preparing an updated logo for my VA business. Caryn was able to take my amateur work, and provide me with a gorgeous finished product, in a variety of formats and sizes so that I have everything I need. Her professionalism, skill and work ethic made her a pleasure to work with, and I would highly recommend her services to anyone needing graphic design support." - Mar...ianne, Thrive Admin Services Thank you, Marianne. I look forward to seeing your business grow from strength to strength. #5StarReview #HappyClientHappyMe

13.01.2022 Tamarah from Tam Bakes Cakes is not only my husband’s cousin but an incredibly talented Cake (Masterpiece) Maker. Check out one of her latest!

13.01.2022 This banner was designed for trade shows and as a backdrop of sorts in training videos that Shimicoat will be producing in the future. It needed to be portable, durable and eye-catching. A few things needed to be considered ... Is it readable from a distance? (What's the average distance it will be viewed from?)... Does it have contrast? Is all of the essential information easily read? Can the images used be printed as large as needed and still retain their quality? Most of all it's on-brand for Shimicoat by using their distinct colour combination and the hexagons that are such a large part of their branding. #DocumentDesigner #DocumentDesignerMandurah #DocumentDesign #DocumentDesignMandurah #DocumentDesignPeelRegion #GraphicDesigner #GraphicDesignerMandurah #GraphicDesignerPeelRegion #FreelanceDesigner #DesignForAPurpose #PracticalAndAestheticallyPleasing #BannerDesign #OnBrand #WesternAustralianBusiness #WesternAustralianSmallBusiness #EpoxyFlooring #EpoxyFloorCoatings #DIYProjects #DIYWesternAustralia

12.01.2022 Happy 13th Birthday to ShoeBeDoo Bunbury! It has been an absolute pleasure working with you, Jo and Warwick, for almost the same length of time! I really can't believe it's been that long! If you've never been to ShoeBeDoo in Bunbury, or Dunsborough, and you have a love of shoes, bags, hats, accessories and terrific service, you really should pay them a visit! Their wonderful service extends to their online store too.

10.01.2022 Happy April Fool's Day! I don't have a prank but how about a joke? #BadJokesAreUs #AprilFoolsDay

10.01.2022 Ever heard of RGB and CMYK and not know what it means? Want to know why your graphic designer should provide your finished logo in both colour spaces? RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is the colour space for digital images. Anything involving screens ... computers, smartphones, tablets, TV, cameras etc.... When you're viewing something on a screen the light source within the device creates the colour you need by mixing red, green and blue and varying their intensity. Colours begin as black darkness and then red, green and blue light is added to brighten it and create the perfect colour. Pure white is created when red, green and blue light is mixed together at equal intensity. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is the colour space for anything printed ... business cards, brochures, posters, t-shirts, stickers etc. Printers create images by combining CMYK colours to varying degrees with ink. Each layer of ink reduces the initial brightness to create the preferred colour. Black is created when all colours are mixed together. In a nutshell that's RGB and CMYK. Pretty simple.

08.01.2022 STOP!!! And take note of this ... Next time you're scrolling, scrolling, scrolling (hey, weren't you just doing that? ) and posts flash before your eyes do you immediately know who a post is from just from how it looks or feels? How well does your favourite store or service keep their brand's tone and personality consistent across all channels? Do you immediately know who a post is from without even seeing a logo or a name? Yes? No? ... So, how are you going with your own branding? Are you using your colours, fonts, images, tone in a consistent way to reinforce your branding too? If this is something you struggle with I'd love to help you.

08.01.2022 My son and I were lucky enough to get tickets way back in April to see ‘Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories’ at the Octagon Theatre today. What an absolutely beautiful and amazing production it is! The story and set design was so clever, the imagery incredible. If you get the opportunity I highly recommend it.... https://barkinggecko.com.au//bamberts-book-of-lost-stories/ What was the last play or musical you saw? #barkinggeckotheatre #octagontheatre #homeschoolexcursion #westernaustralianarts #beautifulstory #beautifulsetdesign

08.01.2022 I recently designed a logo for a brand new business, Hamptons Body Lounge. After seeing photos of her beautiful, Hamptons-inspired space, I knew it really deserved a beautiful logo. I wish her the very best of luck with her new endeavour.

03.01.2022 "Make it simple but significant." - Don Draper, Mad Men This ties in nicely with another favourite saying of mind ... "Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean that you SHOULD." ... Sure, you can add every idea you've ever had into the one brochure, but it doesn't mean that you should. Keep it simple but make it significant.

01.01.2022 I recently created a Brand Guide for Sarah of Active Admin & Business Solutions as well as a social media logo. She already had a brand-new logo but was missing a version that was more suited to social media and wanted some guidelines to assist her team. Sarah works with a team of Virtual Assistants and it's important that everyone is on the same page in regard to how Active Admin is presented to their clients and potential clients. A Brand Guide was created for everyone to ...follow that covered the correct use of the logo, which versions to use when, colour codes, fonts and images. She was then able to pass this on to Marianne of Thrive Admin Services who styled her documents in Word. From the original logo creation, to the brand / style guide to the document creation it really was a team effort. #SmallBusinessWorkingTogether

01.01.2022 A new local company called "The Funkary", who specialise in reinvented bespoke furniture, needed a funky logo that would work well on swing tags and even signage down the track. Here's what I created for them! If you go to www.thefunkary.com.au you can check out some of their work!

01.01.2022 I had the pleasure of designing some brochures for the Shire of Dowerin's Wheatbelt Heritage Discovery Centre recently. They needed to incorporate the Shire's branding along with elements of the Wheatbelt Heritage Discovery Centre, Minnivale and the region's wildflowers. Have you been out that way? Why not take a #WanderOutYonderWA and have a look for yourself. #BrochureDesign #GraphicDesignerForSmallBusinesses #LaptopAndLatteLadies
