22.01.2022 Mid-year 2020 High resolution burnt area mapping of the North Kimberley. This mapping has been produced by the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (DCBR - Char...les Darwin University) for the North Kimberley Fire Abatement Project funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature and Lotterywest. This map illustrates the huge amount of work conducted during the early dry season to reduce late dry season wildfires. The strategic burning across this vast landscape is supporting a large reduction in carbon emissions, better environmental outcomes and work for Indigenous ranger groups. The North Kimberley Fire Abatement Project is a partnership between the Kimberley Land Council and the Wunambal Gaambera, Balanggarra, Wilinggin and Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporations that represent the Traditional Owners responsible for looking after and managing the country in the North Kimberley. https://www.facebook.com/uunguulife/ https://www.instagram.com/uunguulife/ https://www.facebook.com/lotterywest/ https://www.facebook.com/wwfaustralia/ https://www.facebook.com/kimberleylandcouncil https://www.facebook.com/Dambimangari/ https://www.facebook.com/WilingginAboriginalCorporation https://bushfiresresearch.files.wordpress.com//nkimberley_ #indigenousknowledge #climatechange #wildfires #carbonemissions #australianfires #CDUResearch

20.01.2022 Using NAFI setting hotspot alerts You can get the NAFI site to send you an email when a hotspot is detected in an area that you select. This can be a useful tool if you have infrequent fires and so do not want to monitor the NAFI site all the time, but do want to know when a hotspot is detected. To set up a hotspot alert, the first thing you need to do is to create the custom area on NAFI that you want to set the alert for. 18.01.2022 Fire scar in the Great Victoria Desert, WA. Captured using Sentinel-2 imagery a couple of days ago. Spotted by one of the NAFI mappers - this the craziest fire scars I've ever seen. The image on the left is using a combination of the Satellite bands that highlights the burnt country, on the right is what you would see from a plane. This image combination highlights both why multi-spectral Satellite imagery is so useful for picking our burnt areas and how complex fire behaviour can be. We are increasingly using Sentinel-2 band combinations to map fires in the rangelands to improve the accuracy of data on NAFI.

07.01.2022 In 2021 we are going online. Share. Connect. Learn. Thanks to support from The Nature Conservancy, ICIN will once again host the North Australia Savanna Fire Forum in February 2021. Updates available through https://savannafireforum.net

06.01.2022 A chopper view from this morning of some recent extensive fires around Adelaide River, Pine Creek N.T. Hopefully, rain over the last week will prevent further fires of this magnitude and severity before the wet season arrives. #bushfires #CDUresearch #wildfires

03.01.2022 We have today launched a new QGIS Plugin for the North Australia and Rangeland Fire Service (NAFI). This Plugin brings near real-time fire information and fire mapping for ~ 70% of Australia to QGIS, the world premiere Open Source GIS Software. #QGIS #Wildire #Bushfires #FOSS4G

01.01.2022 In tropical savannas, early dry season prescribed burning can reduce GHG emissions by burning less fuel than late dry season wildfires. Our new paper shows that this is partly due to fine fuel loads being higher in the late dry season https://publish.csiro.au/WF/WF20073 @RIELresearch @CDUni
