24.01.2022 Heads up! We are now in the RESTRICTED BURNING PERIOD effective from 9th November until 21st December. Dont be the village idiot that starts a bushfire! PERMI...TS TO BURN ARE NOW REQUIRED. If you require a permit you will need to contact your local Fire Control Officer (FCO) listed in the Shire Notice brochure that was sent to all residents several weeks ago. Or visit the shire website or offices to obtain a copy. You do not need a permit if you are burning garden refuse. You can only burn one cubic metre of refuse from 6pm to 11pm ONLY. You MUST have one person in attendance at all times and the fire MUST be completely extinguished by midnight of the same day. A courtesy call to your area FCO is appreciated. The restricted fire period will end midnight 21st December (or earlier in the season depending on conditions) and then we are in the Prohibited Fire Season. Wed like to give a big double thumbs up to those residents that have made an effort to clean and clear the fire risk around their properties. Fire is inevitable in the Margaret River region and its great to see some people understand and prepare for the inevitability.

22.01.2022 West Bay Fire in Augusta this afternoon. Dozens of homes and infrastructre under serious threat. This was disastrous conditions with 50kph winds fueling a ver...y fast moving fire across paddocks, into creek lines filled with volatile paper bark trees , straight over Bussell Hwy and high into the canopy of the Karri forest. 60+ volunteer firefighters in attendance, plus DPAW, DFES, SES and Air Attack. There will lots of remarkable stories of saving houses from attending crews. Huge thank you to volunteer crews that have come from as far as 100km away to assist with the night shift. Speak to most of the home owners in the path of the fire and they will speak of the frightening speed it impacted them. Please take a few minutes this evening or tomorrow morning and talk with your family about how prepared are you for bushfire. If you live in the Margaret River region you live in a high risk bushfire area. Including the townsites. We see some mind boggling stuff when we attend fires and realise just how unprepared some people are. We could show you pictures of houses surrounded by trees and debris and blokes in shorts and singlets ..... and no shoes. Fighting a fire with a rake. And they probably assumed they were fire prepared ?? Get on the www.emergency.gov.wa.au and work on your fire plan. Work out what you will wear an what you will do. Even if you say your plan is "pack up and leave" that plan needs to be properly written down and practiced.

13.01.2022 Here's a picture that's worth staring at for a few minutes. That is Wallcliffe Volunteer Brigade down there today conducting a Hazard Reduction Burn near the P...ony Club in the bush just south west of town. Margaret River township is in the background. Halloween has been and gone, and we don't want to frighten you, but stare long and hard at that picture. What do you see? We see lots of fabulous bush and native habitat surrounding the town. It's the reason why many of us moved here. To be closer to nature. But if a fire got going with a 15-20 knot summer sea breeze and fuelled that fire and ember attack into town you wouldn't be living in Margaret River anymore. You'd be living 'up shit creek' as they say. Without a paddle. If you live in the Margaret River region you MUST have a fire plan. Including the residents of Margaret River town, and Cowaramup, Augusta, Prevelly, Gnarabup and Gracetown, and Witchcliffe. We cant stress it enough. Simply having a saying "ohh we'd just pack up an leave" is not considered a fire plan. You need to write down exactly what you'd do, where you'd go, what you would take, what you would wear. Would you prepare the house so it stood a chance of surviving and how would you do that? Please please please take some time to today to sit down with your family or neighbours and develop your fire plan. Ask anyone from the 2011 Gnarabup/Prevelly fires and almost all of them would say they wished they had been better prepared. Check the DFES website to prepare your plan https://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/firechat
