18.01.2022 My response to Elisabeth Findlay's recent statement. It is clear from this statement that there is no commitment from QCA to an ongoing offering of printmaking-...based courses for current or future students of this respected tertiary institution. How can QCA be taken seriously, with pretensions of being an internationally relevant art school, if it doesn't have a printmaking department? Printmaking has always been a discipline that is a crucial component in a rigorous fine art dialogue - a rich historical range of autographic mediums perfectly nuanced to convey creative ideas in multiple form, while it continues to be aligned with developments in technology now and into the future. This is true of Printmaking at QCA, with highly respected staff and an impressive range of print graduates contributing to the dialogue that is art practice. As the director of QCA, Elisabeth Findlay should be the custodian of this discipline and be fighting to retain it. She has provided no convincing reason for its removal and this shameful statement has rightly positioned her forever as a top-down toady of university management rather than a genuine supporter of her staff and students. She seriously risks that rather than being seen as a champion of the arts, she will forever be remembered as a ruthlessly selective short-sighted bean counter. While she looks forward to meeting with affected students, these seem like empty words, as I suspect nothing will change the minds of those that crunch the numbers. But don't forget numbers are actually people!! See more
