25.01.2022 What a great experience we had yesterday, presenting our first ISO Zoom grading. It was certainly a unique experience. 4 students attempting Junior Green Belt, (Lizzie, Thomas, Josh, and Alex) and 5 attempting Junior Black Belt, (Lucy, Zara, Yvere, Flynn, and Chay) . As they were unable to participate in partner work, self defence, sparring, or padwork, the students attempted probationary gradings on the day, with the completion of the grading to be held when we get back to... standard classes. I am proud to announce that all the students triumphed in their endeavours and presented strong gradings across the board and were awarded their new belts by their parents. This was a great way to include the family on the special day. The grading assessors, Sensei Chris and Dai Sempai Simone, commented on the fantastic focus, resilience and attitude on the day and I certainly agree with them. With the quality and standard that was presented on the day, I am really looking forward to the completion grading and also the next grading either zoom or otherwise. I would like to congratulate all the students who graded, and their parents. I would like to that Sensei Chris and Dai Sempai Simone for their fantastic work in grading the kids. I am extremely proud of the kids on their grading yesterday and I trust they are equally proud of their achievement. It proves that Firestorm Martial Arts is looking strong and resilient in the current situation and will improve in the future. See more

13.01.2022 Just thought I would share these thoughts. While listening to a podcast on resilience and changing habits, the following phrase resonated with me. Resistance c...reates Improvement. The reason for this was a combination two lightbulb moments that have appeared over the last few weeks. Firstly, if we swap the word resistance with the word restriction, then we have an avenue to deal with our current predicament. I think you will agree that the Covid 19 situation has created multiple resistance problems in the past few months. For me, the restriction on classes, business, social catchups and going out has certainly tested my resilience and patience. I am sure you are all going through similar or even heavier situations. But I recently thought that if we treat this pandemic status as a resistance that must be worked on to the benefit of us, then something good will come out of it. We have all heard of how business is pivoting and adapting to this crisis. Then maybe we should do the same. Let’s get out of our comfort zone and try to find different ways to benefit our mental and physical status so when we do surface on the other side of this pandemic, we have extra skills and strategies to progress in our lifestyles. As for the second lightbulb moment, I have been participating, with other high ranks in BJMA, in several Kata sessions with Soke Richard Norton, in which he has been highlighting not only the way the katas should be presented but also the internal and external benefits of proper breathing and mindfulness whilst preforming the katas. The internal benefits of breathing and muscular tension spotlights the above phrase in its original note. Thus, the internal resistance improves the muscular strength while the mindfulness improves the focus ability. This then turns the preforming of kata from an external activity to a combination of internal and external forces, and as such producing a better and more fulfilling activity. The last part of the podcast dealt with the statement that Rust can defeat Iron. While this is a superficial statement, it highlights the fact that a lot of negative things that happen to us come from ourselves and not from external forces. So therefore the best change can only come from within. The way we react to stress (resistance) greatly affects the outcome. If we want to change our lifestyles or our health and fitness, we have to dispel the excuses and kickstart the change within us so we can rewire our mind and body for the better. Place less emphasis on how the external sources affect our being and more to concentrate on what is on our power to get the best outcome. Seek out ways and means to get the improvement we want. Make the hard decisions to find out exactly what we want and what we have to do to achieve it. This Stage 4 lockdown will be done soon. Now is the time to use the resistance of the time and to get the improvement you deserve and to start the beginning of the lowering of restrictions with renewed positive outlook. See more
