24.01.2022 @sarahforgrasslands conducting a site talk about land-use history and management strategies with respect to a Victorian Volcanic Plains grassland reserve in Truganina South, 25kms west of the Melbourne CBD. . . This extensive reserve is managed by ABZECO on behalf of @parksvic. It forms a small part of the Melbourne Strategic Assessment a government scheme designed to protect biodiversity along Melbournes urban growth corridors. . .... . Some of the species featured in this landscape include: Rutidosis leptorrhynchoides (Button Wrinklewort), Pimelea spinescens subsp. spinescens (Spiny Rice-flower), Pimelea curviflora (Curved Rice-flower), and Stackhousia subterranea (Plains Grasslands) amongst many others. . . #grassland #victorianvolcanicplains #lowlandplainsgrassland #vicvolcanicplains #abzeco #conservation #landmanagement #talk #meeting #sitewalk #biodiversity #ecology #botany #floraofvictoria #floraofmelbourne #melbourne #ecorestoration #ecology #truganina #beauty #passion #outdoors #flowers #endangered See more

20.01.2022 Amphibromus nervosus (Veined Swamp Wallaby-grass) is a slender, usually tufted perennial grass with culms reaching 1.5m. It is typically found in seasonally or permanently wet places, such as in wet depressions and around pools on the heavy clay soils of the Victorian Volcanic Plain. . . An unusually wet winter has seen Veined Swamp Wallaby-grass explode in many places where it had not been seen for some time, including here at a VVP grassland site in Braybrook, 10km west of... the Melbourne CBD. . . . . . #floraofvictoria #braybrook #swampwallabygrass#amphibromus #floraofmelbourne #victorianvolcanicplains #vicvolcanicplains #grasses #ecology #botany #biodiversity #conservation #landmanagement #ecosystem #summer See more

20.01.2022 Caesia calliantha (Blue Grass-lily), of the family Liliaceae. . . . Found on heavier soils in western and northern Victoria, Blue Grass-lily can be identified by linear leaves that are shiny-green below and often glaucous above. The flowers are blue or purplish, with darker coloured nerves. .... . This particular specimen has popped up in a biodiversity offset plug at one of our sites in Kalkallo. Very promising in terms of re-introducing once fairly common local species back into the ecosystem. . . . . . #caesia #calliantha #bluegrasslily #lily #liliaceae #flowers #purple #blue #kalkallo #melbourne #australia #biodiversity #ecology #botany #conservation #landmanagement #victoria #victorianvolcanicplains #vicvolcanicplains #plants #ausnative See more

18.01.2022 Walwhalleya prolutum (Rigid Panic) is exploding after the winter rains at Denton Grassland in St. Albans. Quite the ornamental grass, in my not-so-humble opinion. . . . Rigid Panic can be differentiated from the aesthetically similar Panicum decompositum (Australian Millet) by its thinner, smaller leaves, larger lower glume (between 60-90% of the size of the entire spikelet compared with 12-30% on P. decompositum) and the fact that its ligule isn’t fringed as is the case in... the Panicum species in question. . . . . . #walwhalleyaproluta #rigidpanic #grassland #grasses #nativegrasses #vicvolcanicplains #victorianvolcanicplains #basalt #plants #ecology #biodiversity #conservation #landmanagement #botany #floraofvictoria #floraofmelbourne See more

15.01.2022 Stylidium graminifolium (Grass-leaved Triggerplant), located at Park Orchards in Melbournes leafy north-east. . . 13.01.2022 T’was my last day at ABZECO (Applied Botany, Zoology, and Ecological Consulting) today. Thanks for the knowledge and camaraderie crew. 12.01.2022 Basalt Daisies (Brachyscome paludicola) were planted as part of a planting program we conducted in late winter at Paramount Grassland, a Victorian Volcanic Plains grassland ecosystem with exceptional biodiversity. It’s good to see such a high rate of survivorship, with many of the specimens we planted exhibiting new growth and inflorescences. . . Hydrological changes adjacent to the site due to the construction of a factory complex resulted in the formation of a wet depressi...on, so it was decided that B. paludicola would suit the wetter conditions, and would therefore be a particularly viable option. Other species thriving in and around the wet depression include: Juncus flavidus, Eryngium ovinum, and the rare Austrostipa gibbosa. . . Adapting species assemblages to prevailing conditions often human-induced (and seemingly forever changing) is one of the challenges in terms of ecological restoration within the urban fabric, but if you get it right, it can be very rewarding indeed. . . . . . . #basaltdaisy #brachyscome #vvp #victorianvolcanicplains #vicvolcanicplains #deerpark #abzeco #basalt #restoration #conservation #landmanagement #botany #ecology #melbourne #biodiversity #flowers #daisy #ausnatives #ecosystem See more

07.01.2022 The beautiful Bulbine bulbosa (Bulbine Lily), of the family Asphodelaceae. . . B. bulbosa is a densely tufted perennial herb to 75cm with bright yellow star-like flowers borne on simple racemes. Each flower only last for one day. .... . B. bulbosa does not actually have bulbs, but instead exhibits an underground corm within which good reserves are stored. These plump corms formed part of the diet of Aboriginal people, such as the Wurundjeri of the Melbourne region. . . The pollinator in the photo is an Australian Hoverfly (Melangyna viridiceps). . . . . . #bulbinelily #bulbinebulbosa #flowers #yellow #floraofvictoria #floraofmelbourne #parkorchards #bushland #ecorestoration #conservation #landmanagement #abzeco #ecology #botany #plants #nativeplants #australia #melbourne #work See more

02.01.2022 Was invited by consummate grassland enthusiast @sarahforgrasslands to check out a Victorian Volcanic Plains grassland site she helps manage in Braybrook yesterday (@braybrookgrassland). 02.01.2022 As inspiring and rewarding as conservation and land management work can be, restoring a highly fragmented and historically neglected Victorian Volcanic Plains grassland ecosystem can at times feel repetitive particularly when controlling Serrated Tussock (Nassella trichotoma) for hours or days at a time. . . . 02.01.2022 A typical Plains Grassy Woodland (EVC 55) ecosystem, located in Mickleham, north of the Melbourne CBD. . . Characterised by a tree canopy dominated by Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and an understory consisting of Acacia mearnsii, A. melanoxylon, A. paradoxa, and Banksia marginata, the once very extensive Plains Grassy Woodland EVC has suffered greatly from the ill-effects of agriculture and peri-urban expansion. .... . We are managing this site in the hope of returning it to its former ecological glory. By planting and promoting the recruitment of keystone indigenous species such as Anthosacne scabra, Rytidosperma setaceum, Amphibromus nervosus, and Poa labillardieri amongst others, we are creating vital habitat for local fauna whilst concomitantly improving the genetic diversity, and therefore robustness, of the botanical component. . . . . . . #floraofvictoria #floraofmelbourne #trees #grasses #woodland #plains #botany #biology #conservation #landmanagement #riverredgum #plants #animals #nativeplants #sustainability #ecology #landscapephotography #ecosystem #bluesky #summer #melbourne #mickleham #landcare #abzeco See more
