02.01.2022 The Cobra was a limited edition "muscle car" version of the 1978 Ford Falcon based on the XC Hardtop (coupe). Production of the XC had finished with 400 body s...hells left over and rather than scrap them, Ford Australia elected to capitalise on Allan Moffat and Colin Bond's crushing 1-2 finish at the Bathurst 1000 the year before, by creating a road car with a "Shelby Mustang" look. Henry Ford’s great grandson Edsel Ford was being groomed at the time for a role in the global company and part of his training was to spend time at Ford Australia. He is credited with a classic marketing stunt - sequentially numbering the 400 cars and borrowing the name Cobra from the Mustang model and even copying the striking two tone blue and white paint job. And anyone who watched television at this time will remember it was the classic Ford Mustang Cobra II which 70’s icon and actress Farrah Fawcett drove in another great classic Charlie’s Angels. Ford supplied several Ford Mustang Cobra II’s in the same blue/white design for the series from 1976 to 1978 and they were used until the end of the production in 1981. They were driven initially by the Farrah Fawcett character Jill Munroe, and then her sister Kris Munroe played by Cheryl Ladd.
