25.01.2022 A big THANKYOU to ASCTA and Swim Australia for the Webinar today from Julie Robinson: Understanding Anxiety. The information and strategies will be so useful to help students (and myself!) and has whet the appetite for further learning in this area. www.julie-robinson.com.au

21.01.2022 Have you ever pushed a balloon under water? It naturally floats! Teaching infants or toddlers to hold their breath on submersion is an important survival skill; their lungs become the "balloon" to assist in recovery. The same applies for some students who struggle to float on their back. As you supervise your kids in the bath get them to lie back and feel the difference when they hold their breath!

20.01.2022 I just LOVE this initiative from Life Saving Victoria! Parents and carers please enrol your children in the online CPR and Safety lessons available. They can use a teddy as their dummy, ages 5 and up. Please share, it could save a life.

11.01.2022 Great day today with two Webinars attended for Professional Development. A big thankyou to Life Saving Victoria, ASCTA and Emma Lawrence from Kids Alive do the Five for offering Webinars for teachers of babies and toddlers and also for parents wanting activities for home. We teachers are so appreciative of your generosity.

07.01.2022 COLD WATER SHOCK! Cold Water Shock is the body's response to falling in water below 15C. This shock can be the precursor to drowning. In cold water shock, the blood vessels in the skin close, increasing the resistance of blood flow and increasing heart rate. The heart works harder, causing a rise in blood pressure. Cold water shock can therefore cause heart attacks, even in the relatively young and healthy. In addition, an involuntary gasp for breath and increased breathing ...rate contribute to a feeling of panic, increasing the chance of inhaling water directly into the lungs. This can all happen very quickly. If you enter the water unexpectedly: Take a minute. The initial effects of cold water pass in less than a minute so don’t try to swim straight away. Relax and float on your back to catch your breath. Try to get hold of something that will help you float. Consciously slow your breathing. Keep calm then call for help or swim to safety if you’re able. Flotation devices like PFDs assist greatly with the fall into water and are a must for any boating activity. Teach your children how to respond to the cold water. Get inventive and please share your ideas back with me!

01.01.2022 I always loved the water... we had a swimming pool at home as children and lived in it over summer. Thus as an adult, it was quite natural for me to teach swimming because I just love children and love the water. Pictured here in 2015 with my nephew Thomas who now is fortunate enough to have a pool at home and terrific parents who always supervise him around the water.
