25.01.2022 Coming across an unconscious casualty can be extremely frightening, especially if you are not sure what you should do. Unconsciousness is caused by an interruption of the brain's normal activity brought on by strokes, head trauma, seizures or lack of oxygen caused by other factors. Because their muscles become relaxed, including their swallowing muscles, if the casualty is NOT placed in the correct position their tongue may block their airway, or they may vomit, also blocking their airway. First Aid Training teaches students how to identify potential hazards of an Unconscious Casualty and how to confidently manage these hazards and the casualty until an ambulance arrives.

24.01.2022 Over exposure to cold conditions can induce hypothermia. Hypothermia is when the body's core temperature is less than 37 deg. It is frighteningly easy for a casualty to become hypothermic when exposed to extreme cold conditions combined with wet clothing, fatigue & hunger. Signs, symptoms & treatment for hypothermia vary depending on the severity of the condition which can be mild, moderate, severe and critical. With winter now upon us, it is important to be educated not only on how to treat a casualty with hypothermia, but also, how we can prevent it.

23.01.2022 You have come across an accident where the casualty requires urgent assistance. Do you know how to call for help? Knowing how to call for help in a life threatening situation can be the difference between life and death. There are a few simple steps to take when making an emergency call: * Stay calm and call from a safe location.... * Call 000 from a land line or 112 from your mobile. If you are deaf or have a speech or hearing impairment you can all 106 using a textphone (TTY) or computer with modem access. * An operator will ask you if you need Police, Fire or Ambulance. State the service you require. * You will be connected to your requested service. Speaking clearly, answer all operator's questions and follow their advice, even though it may appear you are repeating yourself. * Ensure you give street numbers, names, nearest cross streets, landmarks and locality. * If you need medical advice, ask to speak to an Ambulance Officer who will advise you of the treatment you need to perform. * Don't hang up until the operator informs you that they have all the information they need. * If possible wait outside at a prearranged meeting point or prominent location for the emergency service to arrive and assist them to locate the emergency. 20.01.2022 First Aid and the Law: First Aiders are sometimes wary of administering first aid treatment as they are afraid of being sued by the casualty if they make a mistake. In an emergency, if a person is unconscious, the law states that the injured casualty has in fact given you permission to perform first aid. This consent is given as their life is in peril and they are not in a conscious condition to make an informed decision, thus if first aid treatment is not given they will die. Competent adults are legally entitled to refuse any treatment, even if it is life sustaining. Substitute decision makers, such as parents or guardians of children, can also refuse treatment on the child casualty but only if it is in the 'best interests' of the casualty. There is no documented case of a person being sued for administering first aid in Australia.

08.01.2022 A casualty who has been diagnosed with suffering from Anaphylaxis should always carry around their own medication, an EpiPen, to be administered if required. How to administer an EpiPen 1. Form a fist around the EpiPen and pull off the safety cap. 2. Place the needle end of the EpiPen against the fleshy part of the outer thigh. The needle will penetrate through jeans.... 3. Push the EpiPen hard against the leg until you hear a 'click'. Hold the EpiPen in place for 10 seconds. 4. Remove the EpiPen from the thigh being careful not to touch the needle. Discard the EpiPen safely in a sharps container. 5. Massage the thigh for 10 seconds. An ambulance should always be called. Tell the operator that the casualty is having an anaphylactic reaction and that an EpiPen has been administered.

05.01.2022 An adult's body contains 6 litres of blood and can lose 1/2 litre of blood without harm. A child's body contains 2 1/2 litres of blood and an infant 750 mls of blood. A loss of 300 mls can cause death in a child or infant. To control bleeding from a wound, apply direct pressure to the wound. Apply a dressing to the wound and bandage firmly, then elevate and support the injured part. If bleeding persists, apply a second dress over the top of the first dress. Do not remove the first dressing.

01.01.2022 That dreaded moment when your crying child comes running to you with something in their eye. Most foreign bodies in the eye are minor and can be treated by using sterile water to wash out the eye, but there can come a time when that foreign body may be a major embedded object or even a burn to the eye. NEVER remove an object from the coloured part (iris) of the eye. NEVER remove an embedded object from the eye. NEVER rub the eye.... The eye is very susceptible to infection. Always wash your hands thoroughly or use sterile gloves when treating an eye injury.
