13.01.2022 Ray Collins Born in Paddington Sydney in July 1936 Ray Collins could only have been described as a larrikin in his youth. At the age of 14 he stowed away on a ship bound for Colombia. His stay in that country lasted just four days before he returned to Australia where he said his father gave him a real hiding. One of 8 boys and 4 girls Ray found himself soon apprenticed to older brother Henry Collins in stone masonry which turns out to be something of a family tradition. Fro...m that time until the present Ray has been on the road through the backtracks and byways of Australia. As he says, it took him 10 years to get from Bourke to the Hunter Valley. When young, his family never talked about the past, even though the older members of the family frequently holidayed in historic Windsor on the Hawkesbury River where his early ancestors had settled ... Years later Ray found out that the family name was not Collins but Cross and this was thanks to the work of lineage tracing undertaken by his cousin, Lorraine Prothero. It seems his family wanted to deny and hide their convict ancestry - but not Ray. The fact that there was no memorial inscribed with the names of all those who voyaged on the First Fleet then became a passion for him. As he followed the work from country town to country town he would often approach the local council to see if they were interested in his idea of a First Fleet Memorial. In all he approached 10 councils over almost a twenty year period - most of whom thought it was a good idea but were afraid he might die before completing it.

08.01.2022 "He bade the judge good morning And he told him to beware, That he'd never rob a needy man or one who acted square, But a judge who'd rob a mother... of her one and only joy Sure, he must be a worse outlaw than The wild colonial boy." See more
