14.01.2022 Crime in North Brisbane a few hot tips In North Brisbane, the three most common offences committed are theft, property damage and unlawful entry. Whilst we live in a relatively safe city and possess some of the lowest crime rates relating to violence, Burpengary, Morayfield and Deception Bay currently sit within the top ten most burgled suburbs of Brisbane. Sad, but true. It is estimated that 40% of Australians leave their residential doors unlocked whilst both at home and ...absent of the home. We are a trusting country, however 70% of burglaries occur where access has been gained through an unlocked door! Of these statistics, only 13% of burglaries are committed by known offenders (meaning the thief is personally known by the victim/s) which means that 87% of burglaries are random. Becoming a victim of burglary can leave a family or business feeling violated and vulnerable. The majority of home burglaries occur during the day time whilst home occupants are at work or school. Business burglary for obvious reasons, generally occurs at night. Items most often stolen are small, expensive items which are both easy to carry and sell, such as watches, jewellery, DVD players, laptop computers, cash, iPods and any other small devices. How do I reduce the risk of burglary? Harden the target! Make your home or business more difficult to enter. Obviously this begins by getting into a regular habit of locking your doors. Check them before you leave and also ensure they remain locked even whilst the residence is occupied. Once you get into this habit, you’ll find you rarely forget to keep the premises secure. Check your locks. Doors are generally quite easy to kick in. Think about upgrading to a heavy duty high security lock and strike plate, which strengthens the door and this alone will deter or prevent most through-the-door forced entries. Sliding doors? These can be easily unlatched. A piece of dowel into the track is a simple and cost effective way of securing any sliding door. Windows are left unlocked even more frequently than doors. Windows possess many different kinds of latches and/or locks and whilst it is important to ensure that every window in your home or business is secure, it is also important to ensure these locks or latches are easily unlocked from the inside in sleeping rooms, in case of fire. Finally, be a good neighbour. Get to know your neighbours and you will quickly form a great protective network for your home or business. Little things such as having your mail collected when you are on holiday by your neighbours can alleviate a pretty obvious giveaway that your home or business is unattended. Becoming familiar and friendly with your neighbours is a great practice, as it deters theft and burglary in a big way. Agree to watch out for each other’s homes, pick up their mail and occasionally park your car in their driveway. It will keep both their and your homes or businesses safer.
